The green turtle is an herbivore and as an adult it feeds mostly on grass and seaweed. Its jaw is serrated with a wide beak which helps it to tear and scrape the vegetation. It is this diet that gives its fat the green color from which its name comes. Juveniles of this species have a more varied diet and feed on crabs, sponges and jellyfish.
Here you can see a green turtle feasting on healthy algae on a reef on Darwin Island.
