Күн бұрын

In our new series Hunter and Gatherer, MUNCHIES joins Stephanie Mutz, a Santa Barbara sea urchin diver as she dives deep for California gold. We follow her as she delivers her prized bounty straight from the sea to the city’s best chefs and her curious customers at the Dory Fleet Market in Newport Beach. It’s time to crack open a few-that is, if you’ve acquired a taste for it.

On the conservation side it’s actually very important to harvest and control sea urchin populations because if unchecked the populations boom and over eat seaweed. The seaweed is essential for fish life and other marine life so the work she is doing is actually necessary and helpful.

I live in the Philippines and we call it Swaki or Uni and the Sea Urchins are as big as a regular size ball. Just 8 steps from the shoreline you can already see them. When you visit the Philippines, please go to Malapascua Island. You'll also find the Thresher Sharks when you go diving. The funny thing is when you are stung with the sea urchin ,someone needs to pee it or you need to pee yourself. LMAO I really don't know the reason behind it. over fishing sea urchins is good thing it helps to slow down bleaching of coral reefs(seabed becomes 'desert') eat your sea urchins people! (and...starfish, jellyfish;;;;;)

Over fishing anything is bad. Those urchins have a role to play in the ecology. They prevent the bamboo from becoming too plentiful. There are species of fish that only eat urchins. On the other hand overpopulation of urchins is devastating for ecosystems and it's always due to over fishing again. The way it looks like it's done there seems fine on the face of it though. Limited permits. Enough urchins for fish left over. Plenty of bamboo. There are always margins within which it is fine to exploit. Beyond those margins though... Bad, bad news.
@coocoo4coca
@coocoo4coca 5 жыл бұрын
@@joeblack4436 While what you said is usually correct, the urchins along the California coast were brought there accidentally on boast and are an invasive, fast-moving/fast-breeding species. They've done huge amounts of damage to the Kelp Forest in the past 7-8 years which is a fragile, unique ecosystem that supports tens of thousands of species of fish, crustaceans and mammals. Urchins should be eaten and hunted vigorously in this case.
@joeblack4436
@joeblack4436 5 жыл бұрын
@@coocoo4coca Oh dear... Well that does change things. Agreed. Just want to add that I wasn't advocated for no hunting to start with just sustainable exploitation. However as an invasive species all bets are off. Eradicate.

I worked as an abalone diver on the British Columbia coast in the 1970's. Sea urchins were not utilized at the time. Still, I was interested in food from the sea. I found sea urchin roe (uni) to be strong in flavour. I would take uni and mix it with the stomach contents of abalone (awabi) and spread it on toast. The result was a perfect pairing of flavours.

My father lived in the Santa Barbara area about 25 years ago. One night he saw the fishermen loading urchins into shipping containers and asked where they were going. Apparently, they were shipping them out to the airport and flying them to Japan that very night. Seems like the urchins from here are world-class!
