Exactly! That's because it can't be done, so they like to just bury their heads in the sand and call that "optimism". Sure, we'll go to a dead, inhospitable planet and completely transform it... why? Because we've admitted that we don't know how to make a 1.5 degree adjustment in our own planet's average atmospheric temperature. _That,_ apparently, is science fiction.
@vermicelledecheval52193 жыл бұрын
I had doubts as well but I've heard thru YT that giving a magnetic field is not as daunting as it could appear. At least compared to the other challenges at stake when you get into the terraforming process... "All you need" is to get a magnetic generator in the Lagrange point between the sun and Mars to deflect solar winds : this seems into our today's technological grasp. Now we need to get the finances for it witch is another challenge by it's own...

But who wants to do that when you can actually jump like Michael Jordan in his prime without effort! The only thing completely unknown would be how human fetuses would develop in anything lower than 1G. Would they be fine or not? In terms of warming the planet, we’d simply have to keep inducing climate change faster than the atmosphere could escape I guess. Don't forget: there are also possibly ways to handle the lack of a magnetic field. One such way is a "magnetic shield" satellite at the Mars Lagrange point L1. While it would take quite a powerful magnetic field and we'd have to upkeep this satellite, it could have a substantial impact on the atmosphere and high-energy radiation levels of Mars. Removing a large portion of the solar wind atmospheric stripping would allow natural processes to build up the atmosphere without so much of it being removed. Another way we could do this is with charged superconducting rings across the planet used for storage and energy transport. High energy radiation reduction would help with human colonization and might open up more options for the kinds of life we could bring to the planet!

The solar striping of atmosphere on Mars is geologically slow process. Per Nasa data the current atmosphere of Mars is in equilibrium with the solar striping, so even a practically dead, geologically inactive, magnetic field missing world is capable of producing enough atmospheric gasses to cover up for the solar striping. That means the magnetic field is not needed at all to create and maintain atmosphere on Mars - although creating Earth kind of atmosphere, in terms of exact chemistry and in terms of mass, will last several centuries. Magnetic field isnt needed to protect from radiation either, because the atmosphere is the greatest shield against that too. On Earth and in future on Mars.

I think we better transform Mars into a giant space ship. (like the Death Star) We need to install a magnetic field, for starters, but to make it a nice habitat, we also should add some matter, to get earth-like gravity. Both gravitational and magnetic field will enable us to add a nice atmosphere. If Nitrogen levels are earth-like, we can have nice sunsets on Mars, to promote tourism. And that will only be a start. Because we would also need an eco-system, planet sized. And so on. Even Musk changed his mind, a human belongs on planet earth. Terraforming is unrealistic. If our descendants really want to migrate to another planet, we should bio-engineer them into creatures with different needs. CRISPR-Cas them into Marsians would be easier. Homo Sapiens Marsianus, or not even homo at all.

In addition to the above, many point out that even if Mars is dead there is significant case for preservation, kind of like the moon or Antarctica, in order to prevent exploitation or altering of an otherwise pristine environment recording vastly different events to what we have on Earth. Colonizing Mars doesn't actually have much benefit compared to asteroid mining and space habitation. We just like having earth under our feet to hold dominion over.

Why does nobody address the ability to keep the atmosphere when discussing terraforming???

Becuase the planet would be heavier and develop a magnetosphere. No one discusses nonsensical ignorance like you posted.

we might finally be able to see what spring is like on -Jupiter- and Mars

I dont want terraform Mars. No atmosphere, weak gravity, no need to protect the environment, perfect for manufacturing. Populate it by robots and a few experts, surrounded with comfort. Use it for space exploration. Mine it, launch it up, build a huge mobile space station, launch it into stars. Way better. Populate real earth planets. No need to terraform.

Beautiful documentary from the best space channel on YT. I'm always stoked when a new one comes out. I sure wish all the billionaires, politicians investors, and NGOs were just as enthusiastic about solving our ecological problems at home...Living in a bubble on a desolate planet sounds like a tragic existence.

Imagine a lander or a rover on top of Olympus Mons? Imagine what kind of view it would have from those heights. It could study volcanism on Mars, high atmosphere of Mars and see very long distances of the Mars surface. And also a lander on the surface of Phobos. It would have a free ride around Mars on Phoposes surface without any fuel consumption and could study Phobos and Mars for a very long time from a magnificent vantage point! 🧐

Nice video. If Mars can terraform over long periods, I wonder if atmosphere building could outpace the solar wind attack of Mars not having an magnetic field?

"Lonely" planet. Redundant thing to say, if Mars is a lonely planet, so is almost every other.
