The Seabee Museum has some great content (thanks for the Quonset hut history and manuals!). Construction is key to victory since before Roman soldiers built mobile and fixed fortifications. If possible a fine addition would be complete construction videos for our old friend the SWA hut in which thousands of deployed G.I.s lived and worked, ditto the SEA hut. As these are built for training leaving some cameras on tripods for time lapse shots would be easy. Without Seabees there would be no deployed basing in many areas and they were key to winning the Pacific war and building necessary basing for subsequent constabulary missions around the globe. Most career G.I.s spend at least a little time in something Seabees built no matter our service. My thanks to you all for the comfortable accomodations!

@Flernaffinor3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Go for it!
@tangoindiamike91892 жыл бұрын
We actually had a few ENs assigned to Amphibious Construction Battalion Two. The Amphibious Seabees have several fleet rates assigned to them, but after their duty assignment, they rotate back into their normal rotation for their rate, and are not considered Seabees. It's like temporarily being an honorary Seabee because while you're there, you wear all the Seabee uniform and gear, and are an integral part of the Seabee Battalion. Just technically, you are not one of the official Seabee rates that remains in normal Seabee assignments. It's the same way for Mobile Construction Battalions. We have support rates from the fleet, like Gunners Mates to manage the armory and weapons, Postal Clerks, Personnelmen, Yeomen, Mess Specialists, Master at Arms, Hospital Corpsmen, StoreKeepers, Photographer Mates, Dental Techs, Journalists, etc. Some of these fleet rates don't adapt well to the Bees and others love it. Some learn to love it after their time is up, and they realize what a unique gig it was, and now they have to go back to their fleet sea/shore rotation. I saw a comment the other day where a gunners mate claimed that his rate was a Seabee rate because he served in a battalion. I had to burst his bubble, and explain there are only 7 official Seabee rates and Gunners Mate is not one of them. I did however, thank him for serving with us, and admitted that of all the fleet rates, the gunners mates seem to adapt the best. I think it's because of the experience they get in a land based unit, with traditional combat arms, and our field exercises are more akin to the Marine Corp than the battle training and weaponry that ship board sailors get.

@@mikevincent2811 Even in an Amphib battalion, there are only four teams of 29 men who rotate doing deployments on the ships. The rest of the battalion remains in homeport. The battalion is split about 50-50 into a sea duty side and shore duty billets. Supposedly, only the sea duty guys deploy if there is an OUTUS exercise. I was shore duty side with ACB2 but got deployed anyway during the Gulf War, and also was deployed to Honduras for an MPF Offload Exercise. I got ripped off big time for my shore duty tour. Went from there, back to another Mobile Battalion. Actually, I served in four consecutive battalions, counting the Amphibious Battalion.

@justcause32542 жыл бұрын
“Ratings”… not “Rates”. One’s Rate is their paygrade (rank in the other forces)… as in rate of pay. One holds a rate at PO3 and above. E1-E3 are non-rates because they literally don’t “rate” until they are a PO. However, one’s “Rating” is job or “specialty”, what they are trained, skilled, and paid to do (UT, BU, SW, CE…). A UT2 is rated as a Petty Officer Second Class with a rating of UT.
@tangoindiamike91892 жыл бұрын
I understood for 20 years and 29 days of active duty that rate and rank are different. Your rank is your pay grade and your rate is your job specialty, sometimes casually referred to as rating. My rate was SW or Steelworker. Remember having to state your rate, rank, name, and service number, but never state your rate as a prisoner of war, only your name, rank, and service number.

@Philosophically Skeptical haha, very true. But coming from a GSE2 over to an EO brings a lot of that knowledge over too. As an EOC, or any Chief in the seabees for that matter, really see the point of all the ratings and treat them as a whole be it as an engineering assistant or running a mixed bag of nutballs with old Marine firearms. Still, they did leave out the EO's which is still very much sought after and had the only signing bonuses at the time due to those "Licenses" that are harder than you think to get. I finally just got that CDL off the license so I could stop taking the tests that were pretty much HAZWOPER classes by now.

Can you pick to become a seabee as a officer?
@tangoindiamike91892 жыл бұрын
The officers are part of the CEC or Civil Engineering Corp, and yes, that is the Seabee area of commissioned officers. You work in or command Seabee units, depending on your rank. You could be a Battalion Commanding Officer with the rank of Commander, and possibly even Lt. Commander. There are junior officers that serve under the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer. You could be CO of a Public Works Facility, or a Construction Battalion Unit, which is somewhat like a scaled down battalion. The CBUs tend to focus on specialized training, like setting up and maintaining Field Hospital Units. By no means are CBUs limited to Field Hospitals, but that's a huge focus of theirs.
