The level of realistic detail you've placed into your layout is absolutely impressive. Even going so far as utilizing prototypical switch lists shows your level of love & dedication to the hobby. Out of curiosity, what were the former road numbers of the two ex-N&W GP18's? I was once a conductor for the Carolina Southern (CALA) in the early 00's. They had 4 GP18's purchased from NS in 1986 & 1988 respectively. 950, 951 & 958 were purchased in '86 by the very short-lived Duval Transportation of the Carolinas (DUVT). In 1987 the line was acquired by Mid-Atlantic (MRR). In 1988 the Waccamaw Coast Line (WCLR) purchased the 943 for use on its Conway, SC to Myrtle Beach, SC branch. In 1995 Carolina Southern acquired both railroads. In 2007 the 943 was the first to reach the deadline due to copper thieves. In 2010 the 950 hit the deadline due to mechanical issues. In 2012 Carolina Southern ceased all operations due to their inability to repair several deficient bridges. In 2014 the 943 was scrapped. In 2015 RJ Corman purchased the idled line for their Carolina Lines division (RJCS). 951 & 958 were repaired to start moving trapped NS owed woodchip hoppers. 951 was soon repainted into their corporate scheme, and relocated to industry switching. The disposition of 958 is unknown, but is believed to have been scrapped. 950 was moved to a deadline behind the Southern States feed mill in Chadbourn, NC. Her fate remains unknown.

Wow! Thanks for the detailed history. I haven’t actually modeled the two GP18s so they are only listed on the roster as believable units that the SC would have had. Maybe two of those former units you mentioned would have been good candidates for the SC to have acquired in 1990. :)

Hi Tim, that was great to watch. I've been planning something like this for my Free-lanced Switching and Terminal Railroad. Formerly it was jointly owned & operated by the NS & CSX. I wondered if any Class 1s. ever 'loaned' (or leased) Locos to a Short-line to help them 'get-started'? Thankyou.
@SeaboardCentral2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, they do. As a matter of fact the Winston Salem Southbound short line is actually jointly owned by NS and CSX. The railroad connects with NS on one end and CSX on the other. They keep 5 four axle units on the property at all times. Either 2 NS and 3 CSX or 3 NS and 2 CSX. You could do something similar if that is what you want to do.
@gp38292 ай бұрын
@@SeaboardCentral Hi Tim, thank you for your reply. I have checked-out WSS on Wiki and the reason why they lease Locos from the CSX & NS. I will check-out photos of the WSS too. It seems to be an ideal basis for my Layout, since I am keen on the NW, SOU, SBD and Conrail - that contributed towards CSX & NS.

You must have a large group of shelves since all those locos would overflow the current layout. I imagine some have been sold or retired. Definitely looking forward to the next installment. And then up to the 6-axle units. The Gadsden tower was prominent on many shots. Is that a single kit or a kitbash? Smooth fit into your yard scene.
@SeaboardCentral2 ай бұрын
This was just a theoretical list of what an actual roster would have possibly looked like if the SC was an actual railroad of this size. As far as actual modeled units the number is 28. And that is what I figure the layout will require once it has been fully constructed. It doesn’t mean all the units will be on the layout at the same time though. They can be off on parts of the railroad which is not modeled or temporarily out of service for FRA inspection. At that point they will be on a shelf under the main yard. The Gadsden Tower is a Walthers kit.

Is M.O.W. work done by contractors or do they have there own crew and equipment?
@SeaboardCentral2 ай бұрын
Done by both. The SC contracts out some things and also handles light M/W work themselves. Contractors would generally take care of welding and frog work a long with heavy equipment repair or maintenance. The SC can handle spot tie replacements and ballasting.
