Nice to see a newer video on purigen. I’ve used it on a tank with tannins in the past and it worked really well. I also had a similar experience with leaving purigen in too long as well, It turned brownish red and wouldn’t recharge even after soaking it twice. I find I have a hard time recharging it regardless though, it never turns back to white. Great video though, thanks for posting!

It works AS LONG AS you're not trying to buffer acidic water.....it crashed my PH from 6.8 to 6.0 in less than 2 hours. Should be a distinct warning on the packaging about this, but Seachem decided this wasn't necessary. Good thing I didn't have a tank full of fish...would had wiped them out....
@ssaquascapes8 ай бұрын
I didn’t do any PH testing. Never thought about it. This test aquarium has livestock in it that didn’t seem affected. Interesting observation though. Thanks for sharing.
@JTCT3718 ай бұрын
@@ssaquascapes In my case, I've used Fluval Stratum, and alot of wood, so I knew the PH would go towards the acidic side...Just wanted to buffer it up with some crushed coral (small amounts to see where it goes sliwly)....Purigen stripped all of that out of the water....activated carbon is the superior product in cases such as mine, as it allows the coral to do its thing. Thankfully its a new setup and Im doing the initial cycle with Nerite snails (which is why buffering the PH closer to neutral is important to me). These 2 poor little guys are actually very tough. Theyre very active at night and seem to be able endure unstable PH fluctuations. If I had fish, they'd be dead. Its because I tried Purigen. Seachem should include a warning about this, specifically, on their packaging. Just to give you an idea of what happened. Successfully got PH to sit at 6.8...within 2 hours (less than)PH was at 6.0. Purigen was all I did differently, and upon adding the carbon, PH started rising again within a few hours.
@ssaquascapes8 ай бұрын
The aquarium in this video doesn’t have aquasoil so I don’t have that buffer. I see what you’re saying with fluctuations in your aquarium but if I may offer some advice: all planted aquariums fluctuate PH daily. As plants produce or consume Co2 the PH changes. If you inject Co2 you change the PH as well. This occurs rather slowly and most available aquarium livestock can handle the changes with no issues. I’m not saying to be blind to it or not care. If you enjoy specific parameters and the art of keeping it stable then of course do that. Just want to lessen any stress you have if worried about you little wet pets. 😁

@@ssaquascapes Thankyou brother. This is my first planted aquarium so I am learning something new. Maybe it comes with age, but I've never been so patient. I've got a test for everything, as I'm looking for patterns in parameters, so no harm, no foul. I like experimenting with new products as well. I get the fluctuating PH, but this was no coincidence. There is a time I would experiment with Purigen again, just not in a scenario such as mine. My tap water is 7.0 and if I wasn't using the soil or wood I'd do experiments with it on a new setup.
@JTCT3718 ай бұрын
@@ssaquascapes another option for the snails is to get another small tank that sits at 7.0 to mainly house snails, and drip acclimate them for periods to go in and do what they do. I haven't had to add any extra food as they are feasting on biofilm on wood and what developed on the glass. Starting to see algae...its a win win for getting into the nitrogen cycle as Im not adding anything extra into the tank and between the plants and small water changes, ammonia has barely registered. Its awesome. My next setup will be larger and will get the CO2 treatment..but I tell you, between the api root tabs and Leaf Zone, I almost started seeing growth immediately, within the first week. Plants are the way to go, where applicable!

Ordered it. Intend to use it for cleaning dust particles and smell. But I have a small concern, since it reduces nitrate, won't my plants get less food?
@ssaquascapes11 ай бұрын
While I like Purigen, I doubt their claim of “reducing” nitrates. Most of these products should say “neutralize or detoxify” in my opinion. If your tank is stocked with livestock that you feed, you’ll have plenty of nitrates from uneaten food and waste (ammonia to nitrates). Plants also use many other nutrients and minerals beyond nitrate/nitrogen. If for some reason you see plant deficiencies, you could supplement with ferts. Though, I personally have not had to worry about low nitrate.

My best growing planted tanks have had Purigen in their filters . It might remove some of the liquid ferts, but, I don’t have any science or testing to give you a definitive answer.
@meurlock2 ай бұрын

@ssaquascapes6 ай бұрын
I have not tried Purigen on green water. But, a 4 day blackout should do the trick. I have done this and then throughly clean the filter. Follow it up with a 90% water change (add very slowly if livestock is still in). This is how I eliminate green water tanks.

Yes, you can use bleach to regenerate it and then of course you soak with dechlorinator to remove the bleach. I don’t know its overall lifespan, and how many times you can rejuvenate it but I don’t need to rejuvenate mine anytime before six months. So roughly 6 months before you need to clean it.
