I was a limo chauffeur from 84 to 86 in Portland. I drove for Seafood / Flash several times and enjoyed the music. Also drove for Heart, Nu Shooz and Pat Benetar among others.

I never saw Seafood Mama but I still have the single in a picture sleeve! I worked with the bass player, Blaine, in the summer of '85, I think. I loaned him my bass for a gig one weekend because he no longer owned one. I did see Quarterflash a few times and regularly served up ice cream to lead guitarist Jack Charles and bassist Rich Gooch and his wife, who both lived around the block from the Baskin Robbins I worked at in high school! I later became good friends with keyboardist Rick DiGiallonardo when he was in Dan Reed Network. He later went on the get his doctorate in music and became a professor of music for many years!

We hired them to play a few times at my parents’ tavern in Hillsboro, first when they were Beggars Opera and later as Seafood Mama. The band was likeably eclectic with a very diverse playlist (including their version of the song ‘Seafood, Mama.’) Developed an instant crush on the pretty hippy chick who sang and played sax.

This version of the song was a regional hit. When Quarterflash formed, Marv Ross decided to "jazz it up".

Always cool seeing bands before they were famous and had big success. This was excellent!

This version is really attractive because you can clearly hear the words and it really is a lyrically brilliant track. Marv was visited by the song Gods the day he wrote “Harden My Heart.”

I reckon ol’ Marv got visited by more than just the song gods. He got visited by the hot wife gods too.

Just excellent writing and songcrafting. Not sure if he wrote it in a single day or over an extended period of time, but he gave it to the band and an early 80s classic was born!
@uncleelmer7 жыл бұрын
The song essentially remained the same under Quarterflash with the real difference being production emphasizing a more pleaful tone in Rindy's Quarterflash version of "Harden" which is more polished and radio friendly.

It's hard to believe this song was first broadcast in August of 1980--39 years ago! Great song. God, Marv had the song angels visiting him when he wrote "Harden My Heart." Rindy singing it in August of 1980 sounds like a hit then and it was before the polished production that came when Geffen signed Quarterflash. Great great song!
@raddmann3365 жыл бұрын
It's a great song and she is very talented but it's hard for me to believe that they didn't purposely try to sound like Pat Benatar who was at her peak then. I've seen a few interviews with them and they seem like they are really good people. Both were teachers and she taught autistic kids. They've been married 42 years and I'm happy they had sucess.

That stage setup might have something to do with it. Not much room to move around there. Plus, it's a mid-tempo subdued song talking about leaving someone. Quarterflash had some other songs that were real rockers.

I grew up in the Greenwood district of north Seattle. There was a club called the "G Note" tavern next to the Lucky supermarket (now part of the Greenwood Fred Meyer), and one day I saw on their sign that a band called "Seafood Mama" was playing there. I wondered what kind of band that was. Do they stink? I laughed it off. Then they became Quarterflash and I realized that I could have seen them in a very small venue before they became famous. D'oh!
@randygoodman600411 ай бұрын
I was with a local Eugene band called Wheatfield, we played the G Note on a regular basis. Funny thing is we played at a club called The Earth in Portland a lot and right down the street Seafood Mama would be playing at the Blue Moon.

It wasn't intentionally mean. They were trying to work in an ad or two. Actually, this show was in August of 1980 so the broadcast gave Marv and Rindy great exposure for this great song which fueled the impact of "Harden My Heart" that got them a record deal with Geffen.
