This seems perfect for my Raspberry Pi DLNA server, don't even need a separate power supply for the Pi anymore, I'll just use one of the USB "outputs" as a power source for the Pi! I can also connect my "old" 1TB hard drive that I'm currently using to directly copy everything to a new drive without using the network... and it will all "happen over there", not on my desk with my PC.

Hi Lon, I didn't see you mention anything about the specs of the ports at the front, are they USB2 or USB3? It'd be interesting to see if the SSD you connected through the hub can operate at its full speed. Thanks as always!

Your review is great, you kept it to the point and simple with enough information for the general users. However i'd like to add that the drive can pretty much only sit on desk flat......the balance while it is standing up is pretty terrible. A slight wobble could make it fall.......and the rubber feet on the side is close to useless, they are just way too small because they want it to look pretty instead of being practical.....not something i would ever do *stares at macbook lulz* They really should have included a vertical mount bracket to make it more stabilized....

So I have a question... Can I use this just to store massive files of 4k and 1080p videos/films and tv series on? Nothing else, just video files. It confused me when it says "Backup Hub", So it is just like a normal external hard drive where you can store anything you want. Is it reliable and what are the chances files could get corrupted or the HD breaks?

says back up because it have proprietary seagate software on the drive that you can use to keep backups of your devices laptop, desktop,phone and what ever else you want to back up I believe at least, I have had other Seagate back up plus external 2.5 inch drives in the past but never used them features at all, some even offer cloud support as well, hope this helps have a good day 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Hi. I wonder if that will work. I plan to connect it to my SmartTV as a video library. I wonder if I plug my phone into one of those usb ports at the front, will I see the hdd content on my phone or not? I dowload most of the stuff using the phone and it would be the best way to later copy it directly to the hdd without having to do it through a laptop or PC.

I notice you have the Seagate Hard drive laying down flat. I always keep mine upright on the little tiny leg bumps, but would prefer to store it the way you have yours as it will then fit under my shelf. Is it okay to use it continuously laying down flat or will this cause it to overheat? Can I stack two on top of each other in the laying down position? Thank you for any advise.

Lon, great videos. I have you on my subscribed list. After the great review, I bought the Seagate 8TB harddrive with hub today. So far, so good. I connected it to my Buffalo NAS system's USB port. My thought was to use Seagates' Tool Kit to auto backup from the Buffalo NAS to the Seagate 8TB drive via USB once a week. I cannot find a way for Seagate tools to find the NAS or the Seagate 8TB drive as it only scans on local drives. Do you have a recommendation for a way to automate a scheduled backup from my Buffalo NAS to the Segate 8TB drive?

Hi Lon. I'm considering buying an external harddrive for my mom for backing up photos etc. It needs to be as easy as possible, and as safe as possible. Do you have any suggestions to which product I should look at. And if it's best to get one that can be set to raid 0 (or is the risk too great with raid?), or one like the Seagate backup Hub where she can have multiple harddrives thorugh the hubs?

I hooked it up yesterday, followed the online registration which only takes a second, then did a format ( quick one .do not do the long format ) then I plugged my old 3 TB WD into one port and plugged my chip reader into the other port, it works flawlessly. I can still search my old video files on the old 3 TB through the hub, and I can see my new video files on the chip reader. ( SD card to usd ) so actually I freed up a USB port on my laptop ...so far I am impressed and pleased. It's not as loud as I expected with the drive spinning, and I plan on putting some insulators under it anyway. Good luck.

I'm still saving up for an Nvidia SHIELD Plex server (currently my savings are holding strong at zero 😜), and I'm trying to find a good storage device to hold my several shelves of DVD movies in .mkv format. I want a drive that has enough storage for all the movies with plenty of space to spare, but at the same time I want to be able to access the drive wirelessly on my computer in the other room. I can't seem to find a drive that does everything I want it to, because I can't seem to find a cheap, name-brand NAS that has a large amount of space in a RAID 1 setup. Not knowing how much space I need doesn't help. I don't know of any way to wirelessly access a normal drive over my network while the drive is plugged into the SHIELD, but 8TB of space sounds like more than enough- a safe bet. I'll probably need to do some calculations in order to estimate how much space I'll need (ripping a few movies, calculating the average size of a rip, and multiplying that by the number of movies I have should do the trick), but I think this MIGHT do it.
@ericbazinga
@ericbazinga 8 жыл бұрын
I just did the math, and based on estimates I found on MakeMKV forums (I basically took the maximum storage space for a DVD (7GB) and multiplied that by my movie collection, which to my surprise was a whopping 611 movies!), I'll need at least 5TB. I want to have spare storage for any future movies I might buy, so I'm going for a 6TB drive. I still can't decide between USB or NAS though... USB is cheaper and a hard connection would also for quicker load times, BUT the NAS allows for wireless access, meaning I can easily rip movies to the NAS from my computer (and probably rip quicker using both my desktop and laptop). Any suggestions Lon?

Good video. I for one will never buy another Seagate product again. I just had two of these fail the same week with the same symptoms. They appear to work for a moment then stop and disconnect/fail to read. Most frustrating as it appears they work momentarily. I've tried everything and exhausted all trouble shooting. Interesting the exact same thing happened around the same time.and relative amount of use. Garbage, untrustworthy product.
