Seagull 1963 Hand wind mechanical chrono for $150!

These are the sapphire and acrylic versions of the Seagull 1963 pilot watch. Gorgeous little watches with beautiful movements for very little money, I will always keep these in my collection. Link to Aliexpress below.

I have the new issue 40mm with sapphire glass. I put it on a cheap, red, non NATO nylon stap, looks fantastic. I have over 60 watches and can honestly say, I am so happy with this timepiece. I paid $140usd and don't know of any other watch that can match that in uniqueness, movement, look and conversion starter.

agreed. I put both of them on Colarebs which have distressed very nicely, absolutely love the look of them. they really are one of the best bargains of the watch world.

thanks for your review. I look at ebay and see some watchers are 40mm with a 18mm band, but some are 40mm with a 18mm watch band?? I don't under stand.

There are dozens of companies that make different versions. I think the 40mm is a newer version people have put out. Just One More Watch has a great video explaining the real vs “fake” versions of these.

Thanks for showing two side by side. There are SO many different manufacturers/sellers that’s hard to know what you’re getting. The hand on your right-side sub dial is different. The Chinese writing is a touch different (do we know what that says?!) You pointed out the crown difference. I’ve seen different engraving on the caseback. Some are 3ATM, some are 5ATM. I think the saturation has hurt the credibility. But I still want one!

true. from what I can tell all the differences stem from the sapphire vs acrylic except the case backs, I think there are 5 different versions of those not including the rebranded ones of which there must be dozens. the writing at the bottom is supposed to differentiate which factory they were made in as well as one of mine saying 21 zuan (jewel) and the other 19 zuan... both have identical movements. Chinese watches aren’t exactly known for accuracy in description or branding though so it never really bothered me. Both are very well made, beautiful and cheap. which factory (I think 3 make them) or box they come in doesn’t justify an extra few hundred bucks but I’m a cheap bastard🤗.

I picked out a good one, new, on eBay and the seller refunded me because he couldn’t ship it. I might just get the lumed version to be completely different! The handset isn’t as nice as these, though. We’re all cheap bastards! #BudgetWatchCollecting

I did some research on variations of these Sea-gull watches. As far as I can tell, the movements are all Sea-gull made (unless it's an actual counterfeit), but the movements are then sold to different companies and each one puts out a slightly different variation of the watch. If I understood correctly, it was another company that actually started making these 1963 chrono re-issues with Sea-gull movements inside and it wasn't until later that the Sea-gull Tianjin factory made the "official" 1963 Chrono reissues when they saw how popular they were. That's why you see a ton of slight variations on these models (true of all popular Sea-gulls) where Sea-gull will sell a lot of their movements to outside companies for them to finish while Sea-gull will also make their own versions. Many times, those companies will use the Sea-gull name since it is well known and well regarded in the watch community. As long as it has the Sea-gull movement inside and you bought it from a reputable seller, these watches should last a long time with no issues.

I have the 37.5mm Sapphire version with Sapphire on a Rios light brown leather strap. My favourite daily wearer. Huge 50 hour power reserve, actually 52 hours when I tested mine. I got it from Poljot 24. It's pops in the daytime. After dark I use my Sea-gull Ocean Star diver. I also have a few Sea-gull vintage 1980s 36mm handwinder watches with the Seagull st5 movement.

Excellent video. Nice comparison between the acrylic and sapphire glass versions. I have 38mm and 42mm versions both with acrylic glass. My 38mm dial is slightly lighter in colour than the 42.

They are a great watch,but, if they go wrong it will cost you an arm and a leg to repair (in the west) and the cheapest way is to buy a new movement and have it fitted.

I haven’t heard of many issues but I do believe it. the only issue I have had is on the sapphire variant the crown is a little bit closer to the case which makes it slightly more difficult to wind. other than that they have been great.

They are very different watches. The number font, the coloring, the hands are all very different. Also, one says "Made in China", the other says "Tianjing China"

I own two of these. A 40mm Chrono Heritage M1963/X - SEA-GULL ST1901 bought directly from Sugess Watch in China and a 40mm limited edition Red Star bronze Seagull 1963 that came from the official Seagull 1963 store in Belgium. The Seagull is a watch that is hard to fault and I‘m quite fond of both of mine but my customer experience with both companies was hardly satisfactory. In sum I was swindled twice. The Sugess was supposed to come with the Swan Neck movement but didn‘t and unfortunately too much time had elapsed before I found out for me to be able to do anything about it. As for the Belgian Seagull 1963, it was only after I had received it that I found out that they do not individually number their limited edition watches (instead all 300 are numbered 1/300) and that it was missing it‘s tag, manual and registration QR code. It was also shipped about two months past it‘s preassigned shipping date. The company in Belgium casually dismissed my concerns and when I asked to return it they informed me that the 14 day return policy had expired. Be very careful who you buy from. The Seagull 1963 company in Belgium seems rotten to the core. I wouldn’t deal with them again if they paid me. BEWARE.

What I don`t like the most in acrilic version is the counterweight of the chrono minute hand. I mean the lack of counteweight opposite to the second hand on the subdial at 9. It doesn`t much together.

yeah there are so many different variants and producers. Red Star (who I think is the “real” producer) just contacted me to see if I would promote them but their prices were double so I just can’t. On this particular watch I really don’t believe it much matters since so many factories have been making these for such a long time.

Those are Colareb, I don’t remember exactly which ones but you can’t go wrong with any of them. They distress very nicely.

So, Here you are, you have two different watches in your hand for a review. You commented about the difference colour of the "faces" but neglect to mention the major difference of the "faces." One says 19 Zuan and the other 21 Zuan. I'm not telling why it is different. You figure that out for yourself. By the way. It's the Dial of the watch. Not the Face of the watch. Pretty nice review, if you disregard the above. 6 out of 10

What’s the difference between 19zuan to 21 zuan

Its the jewel count but it doesn’t make any sense because they both have identical Seagull movements.

If you want a Chronograph than you can't find anything better, because there is only this movement that is available in that price range. If you don't necessarily need a Chronograph you have a lot more alternatives, like Seikos, Orient (Bambino), etc

I absolutely agree with Chris, if you really want a mechanical hand wind chrono in this price range this is the way to go and there are a ton of different variants to choose from. if you’re not necessarily looking for a chronograph then definitely check out Orient (Mako, Ray, Bambino, etc.). if you’re willing to wait on shipping and go up to about $220 DEFINITELY check out Perpetual Watch Co. their SC-03 is one of my favorites but they have a few very interesting choices in that price range. Alex is very wishy washy with shipping but the quality and attention to detail for the price can’t be beat.
