I love the Seagull. Admittedly the Taylor was brighter, but not as balanced. What sold me on buying my Seagulls wasn't just the sound. I watched a video of the owner giving a tour of the factory. He knew how to do each station of the construction of the guitar. From beginning to end. Completely invested in making a beautiful and quality instrument. I was impressed by that.

I liked the Seagull as well. But to be fair, watch some videos of Taylor factory info and you will see also that Bob Taylor is really, really hands-on. He knows what each station in his American plant is doing and why.

I own a beautiful Seagull Artist Studio guitar and think it's an amazing value. But when listening to the Taylor and then the Seagull side-by-side, the Taylor had greater volume, a brighter tone, deeper bass, and (to me) a more pleasing sound. If money were no object, I'd get the Taylor. But the Seagull is incredible--especially for one-third of the price!

The Seagull has a warmer deeper sound almost soothing and comforting. Also, the Seagull is less forgiving technique wise, seems to have more of a touch sensitive response. The Taylor is bright and happy sounding, great for strumming and rhythm backing, not as friendly to me to fingerstyle playing. BTW, your playing is excellent, clean and very well pronounced. IMHO I would choose the Seagull hands down. Also, because of it's wider neck it definitely lends itself very nicely to fingerstyle playing. The the price, it's a winner.

I have many guitars (Hummingbird, Martin D-15m Streetmaster, PRS Angelus SE A40E and the Angelus SE A60E, two Ovations, Epiphone Masterbilt DRM 500C, a Takamine P3NC and a EF360SC-TT and a Seagull Entourage CW QIT Autumnburst). I play the Seagull almost exclusively!! It's my songwriting friend. My constant companion. It is well built and plays effortlessly. I love my Seagull. It's worth watching videos of Mr. Godin himself explaining the physics, and every little detail of his guitars. It's great, and illuminating. He's very good at explaining things, and he loves what he does. (I think he teaches at Berklee College of Music, in Boston.) Has a passion for every aspect of his work -- the trees he grows, the machines he designs...everything. Watch his "guitar clinic" video in a guitar shop somewhere. That's great. And also a tour of a Seagull factory. Great stuff. He has infectious passion and enthusiasm for guitar design.

What an amazing video presentation. Firstly, your guitar playing was a pleasure to listen to, beautifully done. The Taylor had richer bottom end but didn't sound as even from bottom to top as the Seagull. The Seagull was brighter, the Taylor sounded warmer. There was more squeaking in your left hand changes probably because the Seagull strings were newer. This also could be why the Seagull sounded brighter. I have been playing a Seagull Performer maple flame for many years and love it. They hold tune very well. Very nice comparison. I think I'd like to own a Taylor as well some day, but I want a good one which will mean a lot of money. Great review. (just my thoughts)

Thanks for this comparison. Sound is subjective. Taylor makes some great guitars, but they are not "it" for me. I own an Artist Mosaic dreadnought as well as a Seagull 12- string. Chose them over Taylors and Martins that were twice the price. I like the Seagull sound; those warm, sweet, clean mid-range tones and the resonating but not overwhelming bass. Pure pleasure to my fingerpicking ears.

I know this video is to assess tone, but for someone like myself who is comparing this to a Taylor 214CE, how would you say the necks compare between the two? I preferred the low end of the Seagull. Initially, the extra shimmer of brightness in the Taylor seemed to make it a bit better to my ears. However, I think, over time, I would dial some of that out on the EQ, as it can wear out a listener a bit. My pick, of the two, is the Seagull. Both seem like great guitars.

I was in the studio a couple days ago putting down tracks for my new CD. (Not that anyone buys CDs anymore, but...) I was using my Seagull Performer, cedar top CW. (I have a spruce top Entourage as well-much brighter) A number of times, the engineers mentioned how great it was recording. At the end of the session, he strummed it and pulled his phone out to take a picture of the model. I've been gigging with Seagull guitars now for at least 10 years. I'm a heavy-handed player, I don't take care of them as well as I should, and they have held up great. Pretty much, every gig I play, someone comes up and asks, "What is that guitar! It sounds amazing!"

I had a seagull s6 for a while. I ended up trading it eventually but I did love that guitar and it was hands down superior to anything in or slightly above its price point. I also had (until my son “borrowed it”) a Taylor 110ce. As great as the seagull sounded, it was matched by how the Taylor felt. If that makes sense. Taylor’s have that consistent fantastically comfortable feel. I never buy new, so price is less a factor with me but you really can’t go wrong with either of these guitars. Whatever you can afford, get that one. I am currently looking at Taylor 414ce and Seagull Artist like this one. It’s hard to find the Seagulls in a store to try out right now though.

In this comparison, I tried very hard not to inject my bias for the Seagull. I loved the sound of both guitars. Each had its own character, and the differences were ever so subtle. You can taste the sound and literally everyone who plays it doesn't want to give it back to me. LOL I HIGHLY recommend. Seagull guitars are the best guitar for the money. No question. Easy to play. Did the guitars have the same strings on them? The Seagull had more finger noise, but different strings could account for that. I love my Seagull S6 but I have to say the Taylor sounded better, deeper/fuller lows and more sparkle on the highs, more volume. Worth three times more? I would need to see how they feel and play personally. Seagulls are fantastic bang for the buck, Taylors are fantastic, period. Great playing and thanks for the comparison!!

I love Taylor guitars, but that Seagull is just so tonally rich and balanced. Plus Seagull has so many technological advantages over other guitars. You should check out a video with Robert Godin, the founder of Godin Guitar Co. They make Seagull guitars and he gives a nearly two hour guitar clinic where he talks about all the design innovations they've made with their guitars. Most notably, why the headstock is shaped the way it is, and their double truss rod design that allows you to tune down without encountering string buzz on the first five to seven frets like most guitars. It's a fascinating video if you're really into guitars. Liked and subbed.

The sound quality from your demos sounds noticeably better than other stores' demos of similar guitars. Are you using any post-processing like reverb, compression, etc. or is it just the playing? I have owned two Godin-built guitars (Seagull, Norman and Art & Lutherie) and nothing I have ever come across (in the low price range) can compete on sound/quality. Both however needed a good setup to get the string height right. That's not to say I would not opt for the Taylor 814 if the prices were much, much closer.

Thanks for playing well and doing the comparison. Both are nice guitars, balanced and they sustain pretty well. Taylor is brighter and a little more responsive + more volume. Seagull is a little muted with less articulation. Can't comment on the playability of the Seagull but I don't think you were struggling. I've got the S6 Classic M-450T. I think the balance is reasonable - maybe it could use more mid-range. I've got a few other Godin guitars and the S6 is my daily driver for now. For the sound, playability and price - Seagull is a really good value IMO

For which kind of music it fits best and how is the playability compared to Taylor 114ce-414ce ? I play Guitar for 2 months and looking for a new guitar for around 1000 euro +- So it's important how easy to handle with this guitar for beginner :) So far are Seagull Maritim/Artist and Taylor 114ce/214ce (new), 314ce/414ce used - under my eyes. So far loved 414ce best, but only based on YT (814 is nogo, its to expensive)... I Will go to the shop this weekend, but they dont have seagulls at all. Seagull I will be able to buy only online, or need to drive 500km with a Bike.... :D P.S. I dont like country, blues and Jazz at all. Both brands, if well set up will be comfortable to play and learn on. My advice is to buy something you can try out and have a short return option if possible. All the best. Roger

Talyor had a bit more volume than the Seagull, and the attack cut through on the Taylor better if thats your playing style, but they both sound amazing. If they cost the same I'd pick the Taylor, but I probably woudn't pay more than $100 for the Taylor its a hair better sound but not enough to pick it if it costs alot more.

Es cuestión de preferencia pero seagull suena balanceada para flexible y se escucha fácil regimento , taylor se escucha de una forma aunque bonita , como que secunde lo fácil que es manejarla . Uso seagull.

Taylor guitars are precise but like a sterile office. I like the engineering of the neck of Taylor guitars for longevity but feel as though sound is not as warm and lacks some overall character at times. Warmth, low end the Seagull has and the reputation of the neck strength at the connection to the body by Godin is arguably the best with respect to long-term dependability.

Those Canadians are on to something. Seagull's are solid. Lotta guitar for the dollar.

The “personality” on Seagull is noticeable. I own Seagull S6 slim and Taylor 314ce so have great perspective - I choose Seagull. A great test for me is playing intro to “And You and I” by Yes. I let notes resonate until totally diffused. The interaction of notes in “clear” space speaks to guitars true nature.

Taylor treble just wears on me in a bad way. Why I sold my Taylor and bought a cedar top Takemine. The Seagull wins for me.

Own a three thousand dollar Taylor and a nine hundred dollar seagull as well as a Pretty pricy martin and if at any time I find myself playing or writing with my seagull...WHICH I DO BOTH OFTEN...of all the things that go through my mind while doing either regret that I don't have my Taylor or Martin in my hands has NEVER been one of those things...my Taylor is of course a fine instrument no question...but it's my third attempt to own one and of the three the one I own now is the only one I've ever come close to finding lives up to the brands hype...each of the Taylor's I have owned have been from different price points along the brands tier and I have to say as whole in my experience Taylor's are loud they project amazingly their sustain is otherworldly...but the clarity ...the individual tonal separation on them all is just not what a company that has ten thousand dollar guitars in it's standard product line should produce...strumming a Taylor creates a loud crisp present yet blurry almost muddy sound ...the separation of tones, undertones and overtones of the actual notes played quite frankly is beyond disappointing for this brands status in the market...newer martins are equally lacking in this area both guitars will only will only truly shine when you are playing with a lot of picking and not much strumming...my seagull on the other hand...has all the good things and mostly on the same level of good as my Taylor but also rewards each strum with the most brilliant blending of tones that is never muddy and gives you beautiful tonal separation so that each note is present and in it's role within the theoretical construct of the chord strummed the chords come through as one perfectly blended tonal event and it's an amazing sounding guitar honestly I have to admit some of this is anecdotal and my personal experience with these guitars is also shaped my my playing style which is a hybrid blend of picking and strumming and the seagull is the one that best fit that

Seagull seemed to be more mid-forward and slightly less complex- seems that it would really cut through.

the seagull sounds decent, but unfortunately it just doesn't have the sparkle and shimmer of the taylor. It is very mellow and pleasant however.

Taylor 814CE sounds clear and articulate. The Seagull Artist sounds muddled on the low end - perhaps the action is set too low?

Law of diminishing returns. When you need to spent huge money once you reach a certain point to gain anything further. In this case I don't think the extra $$$ for the Taylor is worth it compared to the Seagull.

Not an accurate comparison. The guy should have been using the Taylor 810CE (the dreadnaught) instead of the 814CE (the Grand Auditorium) since the Seagull was a dreadnaught.

Seagull is much warmer and fuller. The Taylor has good midrange and the Taylor looks really fancy. I think the Godin Metropolis LTD is actually better than both.
