Seal Rescue: NEW NET Put to Test!!!!

3 жыл бұрын

After a very long, extremely anticipated wait, our new net has finally arrived! Naude spent the afternoon setting it up with the help of an engineer friend that built a new connector block and handle. The new setup is considerable lighter, and will be a massive net asset to Ocean Conservation Namibia's work.
Denzil and Naude set out in the morning to put the net to test. The new design features 2 longer zippers, that can now open from the top and the bottom - and this would come in handy!
They saw a sub adult female with a line tightly around her jaw, and trailing the rest of the line as well as a big lure behind her.
The 2 of them gave chase, with Naude handling the net. The lightness of the net was great and he easily got it over the seals head. The new top zipper is an excellent change. They opened the net from the top easily, managed to cut the line, while the rest of the net could still restrain her safely.
She was released and they managed to bag 4 more seals for the morning - all with the new net:) 🦭

fantastic job. A few days ago they gave the news in my country of the almost 8000 dead marine babies in Namibia, blaming climate change. I doubt that is the problem, I read a very interesting article where they pointed to intensive fishing that leaves young pregnant females without food and that causes them to miscarry, I don't know what the problem will be but there is always the human behind everything That is why your work is so valuable. You have my deepest admiration, guys. A hug from Spain

@@TheBooban The world problems are cause by.............. humans, all humans. Not divided by race, colour, nationality or any other way which allows some people to absolve themselves while pointing the fingers at others. So easy to blame it all on China, but a good guess is that you yourself purchase many produces from China to cash in on their cheap labour, which by the way has to be fed cheaply! All those goods arrive around the world using dirty energy. No sense is blaming others if you can't begin to look at your own contribution to the problem. You want more, more more, cheaper, cheaper, cheaper, but some how you end up not part of the problem! Open your eyes.

@@dustigenes oh gosh you’re so naive. Of course i buy cheap stuff. Im not stupid. Im not going to buy expensive things when others are buying cheap stuff. That doesn’t change anything. Politicians have set us up for short term gains and China is taking advantage of it.

Very satisfying indeed! And here's a tip for the guys at OCN: please try and be more transparent with expenses and where the donations are going. I've donated more than $100(and for someone from a third-world country, this is quite a lot) because I'm grateful for your work and because I trust you guys. But otherwise, I'd feel a little bit wary and suspicious, because I have no idea where the donations really go to, and what type of costs you guys have. By now you've raised what, 40k USD? That's a considerable amount, should be enough to buy more than just a net. What are the issues you guys face? How far are we from the dream of having a facility to take care of seals in need? How can we help you even more? Being more transparent will help convince even more people to donate and help you guys. This is just some constructive feedback, as someone who worked at a crowdfunding platform. I'll keep on donating regardless, of course! Great job guys.

Hi Gabriel - thank you for pointing this out. We have raised quite a bit of money through social media and we are very grateful for that. Our new nets were expensive, but definitly didn't cost us US 40,000. The donated funds are used for a lot more than that such as fuel, vehicle maintenance, protective clothing, salaries, travel expenses and vet accounts. We don't have an office or other unnecessary expenses, and we are happy to report that our funding has been strong enough to keep us going for a few more months.

@@queenbabylonia4594 "... why even bother ..." There are hired communist agitators, who goad people in other nations, where there is freedom, in order to simply instigate problems, for no other reason. The mysterious down voters, are probably not directly communists, but there's people who are sent out just to agitate and instigate social unrest. The communists want to create issues in order to show that free society can never work. So, while they may not personally, hate puppies, kittens, and rescuing seals from entanglements, they have a job to do; and that job is to instigate problems. So they convince others that it's "fun" to downvote every video they can. Some are even paid, but most are just tricked into it. This is my opinion. Do you have a more logical explanation?

@@graystonegardens1642 "... silicone spray lubricant ..." The newest version of 3-in-One oil squeeze bottle is now, a non-petroleum, synthetic lubricant. Its active ingredient is PTFE. I was forced to try it, since they seem to be phasing out the classic oil. So this isn't even oil, it's a synthetic liquid, and it works better than oil. It's not silicone though.

How many seals do they catch a day? Are they out everyday? Broken field running with biting obstacles and grouchy patients. Respect.

Awesome as usual, so glad to see you help our friends, would like to ask about the reports that are coming in about over 7000 thousand seals ( mostly yearlings I think) that are supposedly washing up dead in your area, several articles have been reporting about it. Could you give us the real story? 🐺👍🇺🇸!

Fantastic job you guys!! Is this always the same group of seals? And what is the reason that there are so many lines/nets/hooks on these animals in Namibia? Is it because of the sea current that these lines/nets/hooks etc end up there?
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia 3 жыл бұрын
We have 1,3 million seals along the Namibian coast, and we are based close to a busy port with a large fishing industry. A lot of debris as well as old / damaged / tangled fishing line gets thrown overboard most of the time and the seals play with it, leading to this situation. The seals are also often close to the fishing vessels as they work as it is easy food for them.
