Seal Rescued From Rope

We had to go with a blind entry on this rescue mission, meaning we went into the seal colony without seeing any potential target. It has become a very sad reality that even though we didn’t see any specific entanglement beforehand, we still find at least one or two entangled animals in the group. The ocean is full of plastic rubbish and it is getting worse every day. Sadly, we are again expecting a new record year for entanglements.

Yes, over 50% of the entanglements come directly from fishing activities. We encourage our viewers to stop eating seafood, this is unfortunately the only step forward at this stage.

Some come back on the beach as soon as we have left, some remain in the water to cool down and play, and the others head out to sea to hunt. To give the Cape fur seals the rest they deserve, we rarely hit a group twice in the same week.

Yes, you're right, the work of OCN is truly incredible and I wish I could be there too and take part 😊! Nevertheless, your work, on the whole, often seems pointless to me because for every seal you save, there are a large number of unsaved seals that die in agony without understanding what is actually happening to them😥! And often they have to save the seals that have already been rescued again because our garbage in the ocean is still “waiting” for them 😖! Even a hundred organizations like OCN, on every beach in the world, could do it Not solving the problem and I think they are aware of that! There needs to be tougher penalties for all those who cause the waste, such as: the fishermen with their ghost nets or companies that refuse to let their garbage be disposed of for more money so that it does NOT end up in the ocean! I don't have a lot of money myself, but I'm still happy to pay a little more for environmentally friendly packaging when shopping, as long as it really helps to rid the oceans and beaches of garbage :)! Only if enough other people around the world were willing to do this could something change, at least that's what I hope😐!

I was once so free to try to write a poem that should not only make us humans understand but also feel what we do to seals and all other sea creatures! I'm deliberately leaving it in German because I can't estimate what the translation would sound like! : Tief im Meer war ein Ball aus Fischen, ein hungriger Seehund hoffte ein paar davon zu erwischen! Er schwamm schnell drauf zu und bemerkte nicht, wie ihn ein Geisternetz erwischt😐! Er fing an zu kämpfen und konnte sich befreien, doch ein Teil vom Netz engt ihn immer noch ein😖! Es nimmt ihm die Luft und verletzt ihn schwer mit letzter Kraft verließ er das Meer! Nun liegt er schon halb tot im Sand und weiß, er kann nie mehr weg vom Strand😔! Hunger und Wunden schmerzen zu sehr, er hat keine Kraft, keine Hoffnung mehr🙁! Tränen rollen ihm übers Gesicht und er begreift nicht, das es der Müll von uns Menschen ist, der IHN jetzt frisst😞!
