Seal Rescued From Tiny Entanglement

After thousands of rescues, we have seen how much damage a tiny loop of thin recreational fishing line like this one can do. It relentlessly cuts through an animal's flesh until it can no longer breathe, eat, or even move. Fishing lines and other plastic traps are designed to do that. Seals are unprepared for this kind of death trap. For this seal, it ended well. For many other animals, it does not.

The thinnest line will cause as much damage as any larger, more visible entanglement but it's so much harder to see. Thank goodness for the OCN crew's eagle eyes, strong binoculars and experience making it possible to spot the insidious things. Thank you for saving this pup.

We scan the different groups of Cape fur seals with binoculars from far away, looking for imperfections in their fur. This is a skill we wish we never had to develop, but we are unfortunately very experienced by now.

We have been advised by leading pinniped specialists that, unless we can keep the animal in a sanctuary for rehabilitation, we should avoid applying medicines to their wounds. Topical creams and ointments would wash off as soon as the fur seal goes in the water, while water-resistant sprays may lock in bacteria and aggravate their injuries. We see healthy recaptures every single day, proof that seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner and that Cape fur seals are extremely resilient animals.
