Seal Saved from Nylon Rope

Wally, Kerstin and Antoine from Ocean Conservation went on seal patrol and they spotted a female seal with an entanglement around her neck. She was too big to be caught by hand and Antoine used the custom made seal rescue net to immobile the seal, for her own and the rescuer's protection.
Once secured in the net, the rescuers could open the zipper and access the entanglement. Once again, a tiny piece of nylon rope with unknown origin had caused a painful and deep injury to an animal. A few moments later, she was released back into the ocean, unharmed. 🦭

It always amazes me that you can spot which seals to rescue. And then stay with them in what reminds me of the mayhem of the mosh pit of an AC/DC Concert.

Thank you for asking as it is obviously incredibly hard to see from the videos. It is a lot harder than the video might suggest. There are normally at least 3 individuals scanning the same group of seals with very powerful binoculars and experience. Sometimes it is the body language of the seal that first catches our attention, often an entangled seal is very wary and skittish, presumably due to being in pain and unable to free itself of the entanglement. Sometimes it is the sunlight catching the tiny thread poking out from it's neck. Once we have all focused on the seal and agreed that we believe there to be an entanglement one of us doesn't take their eyes off of it while the others prepare for the rescue. We often lose track of an individual in a large group of fleeing seals, but 99% of the time at least one person is able to guide the one with the net if need be. Thanks for watching and commenting.

RickJason Unfortunately, the problem is in everyone's oceans. Fishermen, corporations, and normal people dump a lot of trash in the ocean, and that trash can move thousands of miles due to ocean currents.

In passing, over the years I had heard about how important it is not to throw just anything in the water because of the damage it can cause. But, until I happened upon these rescues and removal of the destructive garbage from around these creatures bodies, that we supposed human beings carelessly put in the water, did I see and feel the depth of the problem.
