Sealed 1955 Proof Set Reveal

Got this beautiful unopened set off eBay recently and couldn’t wait to tear into it.

I have the 55 flat pack my Dad bought me 47 years ago (a cherry) from a Dealer . Now I just collect rarer certified Morgans and rainbows certified . My 1878 cc Morgan I bought raw in 1980 for $120 came back NGC-65..

Are you sure that the box was sealed at the mint? I ask this because I’m pretty sure that they didn’t have any poly propylene. , I’m not an expert but I do consider myself as pretty knowledgeable about coins and currency. I have opened up several proof sets and they all have that brittle plastic bag that holds the coins.

I can never be 100% sure about anything but ive opened a lot as well and it seems to me the ones stored well and unopened usually have flexible plastic. Ones opened “dry” out giving it that brittle crisp feel.

Your quarter and hafe has damage in the field from the plastic wrap.

68 is a very high grade. 64 to 67 is more realistic.

I agree. I haven’t sent any of these in for grading but I have sent several in the 50’ proof packs in. 66-67 is my most come on the 50c pieces. I have learned a bit since I made this video. Now I pretty much don’t think it’s 68 unless i find no flaws.
