You did a great job on that old boat. I have an old Alumacraft that was in about the same shape as yours. I paid $100.00 for it about 25 years ago. I still plan on painting it "someday". I hung a 2002 30 hp Johnson on and welded up the leaks. It still gets the job done. Good luck with your project.

Did this about 40 years ago. First lesson I learned was loose rivets eventually punch through the sealer.

That hasn’t happened for me yet. The Gluvit is a pretty hard epoxy.

I cried a little when you poured the catalyst right into the can. I'm sure others mentioned it, but a good life lesson was hopefully learned... mix on separate container in order to do smaller amounts at a time. Then you wont have any wasted. All in all, it looks GREAT!!!
@carterscustomrods3 жыл бұрын
Also, for anyone coming here, get a respirator. 3M makes a great cheap one that you can get on amazon for like $13. Then get filters for it, and you can walk through a field of aluminum powder covered in Covid and lit on fire, and smell nothing. Aluminum sanding is nasty stuff, even outdoors, and a dust mask, or even an N95 will not help much. :)
@ryanmayet30133 жыл бұрын
Yes, I totally wasn't thinking in the moment. It would have been nice to do another separate coat the next day.

@@carterscustomrods 3M respirators are good stuff. I have one that is literally covered in different types of paint and going strong. Its kind of weird when wearing one because you smell nothing at all during the project. Then you get done and go back in the garage 20 min later to check on the paint drying and get hit in the face with fumes.

I like that the gluvit catalyst can pour into the can without spilling over. I guess one could do half the can and half the catalyst. Then mix the second part when they need it. I never heard of this stuff. You spray painted over your concrete driveway? Wow. But, for a beat up jon boat and a little bit of time on your part you ended up with a boat that will do what you need it to do.

Old fisherman would commonly use a flat bottom boat with just a set of oars. No paint just plain Aluminum. Your paint job looks high dollar. Thanks for the lesson.
@ryanmayet30133 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I like the all aluminum look also, but there were too many coats of paint on this old boat to strip down. I think total cost may have been around $200.

Oars are nice too because if you dont throw a motor on it your dont have to register the boat in CO. The 15 ft Jon Boats haul ass too with a set of oars and a strong back.

First off great video. I just bought a 16ft aluma craft and planned on painting mine the same color inside and out. What size alumahawk paint can is that and how much did you end up running through? And how has it held up over the years?
@ryanmayet30132 жыл бұрын
That was a 1 gallon can. And I pretty much used it all. It’s been holding up pretty good. 2 years now with some flaking where I didn’t prep the best.

Have you seen any of the paint not stick or peel back off of the gluvit? I am getting ready to use gluvit on my boat and I read that you need epoxy compatible primer, and most primers I have seen for aluminum say to use on bare aluminum. Just wondering how yours has lasted so far.

This is the best video out on this topic. I'm getting a spraygun for my 10 foot jon project and using the same alumahawk. Was 1 gallon enough for two coats on both inside and out? Also, how is the paint holding up after some time/use?
@ryanmayet30134 жыл бұрын
Kyle Alt thanks for the comment! I appreciate it . 1 gallon was enough for 2 coats and my boat is 14ft. Now, that was mixing it with the MEK. I think on a 10ft you should be totally fine with 1 gallon. So far it’s holding up great. Doesn’t scratch easily. Has been sitting in the sun since I made this video and still looks good.
