The small string instrument is a mandolin I think. A piccolo is a miniature flute, just so you know.

I think it's a mandolin too. The instrument is popular, essential really, in bluegrass music. Less common in other genres.

There's so much missing here that you would've heard in the studio version. In that version there's a toy piano that's played, and it really adds to the song. I saw them live several times with a full band backing them, and each time someone played that toy piano.

The song loses some of its extra spice in the live version. The studio version has some backing instruments, and the melody/phrase at the beginning and end of the song is played on a toy piano. I think that the background vocals might have some overdubs to thicken them up. The small stringed instrument is a mandolin, used often in folk and bluegrass music. A piccolo is a type of flute, smaller than the normal version- it can play higher notes than a flute.

Totally agree. Once you know a song, the live version can be nice. But most of the time your first listen to a song should be the studio recording.

iT's a Double 5 string Mandolin (10 strings) small Lute 'guitar' that's mainly used for Greek music but its origins date to Celtic and Medival Times but some believe it goes even farther before to the Romenians in 1380 AD pre-dark ages. I have one from 1909 and still plays great.

I guess one of the things life teaches you as you go along is the fragility of it all. We don't recognize in the moment the things we love and assume will always be there....won't. It's something you only really learn once you experience loss. This song drips with nostalgia and a sweet sadness.

I got to meet them several times. Formally and informally. They a couple of hit albums with several hit singles..including Diamond Girl, Hummingbird, We May Never Pass this Again..among others..Their music was inspired by their spiritual influence..the Baha'I Faith..* Jimmy passed away a few years ago. Rest In Peace/Paradise bro....His brother is a founding member of the duo England Dan & John Ford Coley..I think you previously recated one of their songs also...Love what you do..🎶

Everyone says mandolin . OK. But when I think of a mandolin, I think of Bill Monroe (Bluegrass). So mandolins must come in different shaped bodies then because the body of the instrument played here looks nothing like Monroe's.

I will stand by my feelings on Midnight Special - never listen to a song for the first time on Midnight Special. The sound quality will always be inferior to the recorded version. We stayed up to watch Midnight Special because we would never be able to see a band live, touring was for the big cities. The sound quality is iffy, but we were already fans of the song. ❤️😁
