Issue is getting the legal system and public at large to believe without directly seeing it in use. Imagine being a judge and the prosecutor says: the person on the other side kills people by writing names in a notebook. Even if you were inclined to believe in magic, science has usually shown most occult things are false or have earthly explanations. But never in humanity has a full on logic breaking science defying magical tool EVER made itself publically known by a supernatural entity.

Seriously though, if Light decided to confess, telling L all the circumstances around his methods of killing would sound insane to literally everybody. The only way to prove it would, ironically, be to kill someone again in a VERY convoluted way that nobody could guess and tell L exactly how it was going to happen. But then you have to somehow ensure that Ryuk never gets his Death Note back because he would kill Light in an instant for ruining his fun and then do god knows what else with it. Not to mention, how the hell do you get the courts to handle this case let alone believe it in the first place? Confessing might be the only way that Light could have lived the rest of his life (almost) carefree.

Lets assume L has Light arrested for being Kira. Ryuk would kill L for ruining his fun. Then, L thinks back to the conversation with Light where Light tells L that Kira can control people for a short period of time before their death. L would come to the conclusion that Light is not Kira, but that Kira was confessing to L, THROUGH Light, and that the bit where he can kill people in multiple ways, and even control them for a period beforehand, was true. L would take it as Kira mocking him by literally showing L his hand, and then winning anyway, and killing an innocent investigator in the process after making him suspect the guy for months.

Things were not just heart attacks as we've seen instances of people being controlled which destroys the notion of the poison which gets even worse when people don't always react to things as you want, if it is a delayed reaction then it is within reason to expect a few people to have survived and a few reports of being poisoned would exist.

This is literally the thought process I had about Death Note, it shows a glaring issue with the writing because L is an explicitly lateral thinker. Whether or not he likes it, simple things do not make sense to L because he learned that everything is more complex than it looks. If Light turned himself in he probably would get off scot free, especially because you could interpret Light's behaviour towards L as a desire to have a friend, since Light clearly spends all his time alone and is isolated. Lawliet would be one of the few people in the entirety of Japan who Light might actually relate to... Because of this I think that L would just overlook his confession and consider a brand new angle. Who knows - L has never had a friend either

Imagine a story where you follow the world's best detective who has decades of education and training under his belt, taught by the best of best, tracking the world's most elusive man. He goes through hoops and hurdles, starts losing his mind, morals, friends and love ones along the way because of his obsession with catching him. I'm talking 5 seasons of 25 minute episodes long. In the end, he finally catches him but it turns out the entire time he was using just straight up magic (no history to speak of, he is the only and first one to have it). He wasn't even using some 500 IQ tricks to evade them, he was just using a fucking Level 2 Teleport plus he's a moron and the detective has just been glazing his mistakes as masterclass moves. All those years of trying to hardwork and sacrifice and to catch what? Some hobo who's newfound magic invalidates your skills and accomplishments?

I believe there are people who have admitted to murder but were basically only charged for obstruction of justice and perjury Because despite their claims there was undeniable proof they couldn't and were just proven attention seekers with minimal investigation

Doesn't Japan have a 99% conviction rate? The criminals were going to jail to the point of death penalty in some cases... Whether you're guilty or not. Edit - the point is the 'criminals' weren't going free anyway is the point.

Idea (or well, ideas) for a Star Wars video: 1. Vader and Luke's duel as both debate about the meaning of "The Tale of Darth Plagueis The Wise", with us then getting the "join me luke" moment but instead it's "Luke, you can debate with the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together we can educate the galaxy on our thesis as father and son. 2. Palpatine meets Luke alongside Vader, telling him to tell Luke his thesis multiple times.... only for Luke to reveal that he was fascinated by his thesis when they originally fought and has since studied "The Tale of Darth Plagueis The Wise" as both begin to debate on it with Palpatine just sitting there for it and, to avoid the torture of it, he is about to kill Luke, telling them both to shut up as he's just done with "The Tale of Darth Plagueis The Wise", leading to a shocked Vader going and picking up Palpatine before throwing him for not caring for "The Tale of Darth Plagueis The Wise" or his thesis.
