Seamless Repeating Layered Pattern Fills and Exporting in Illustrator

Layer a floral repeat pattern over a diagonal stripe in Illustrator while ensuring it repeats seamlessly. A workflow for pattern designers who work in Adobe Illustrator to create patterns for Spoonflower printing.
To layer patterns, make sure the smaller tile has dimensions that will divide evenly into the larger tile.
Use Pattern Mode to resize the tile and create patterns for layering.
Create a rectangle the size of the larger repeat, and use the Appearance panel to stack pattern fills.
When you are ready to export, use File -Export - Save for Web.

Hi Laura, Great video! can you save the layered pattern into swatches? Or you have to save like you would as clipping mask with layered art?

You can save a "stacked up fills" appearance as a Graphic Style. I created it in the Appearance panel, and then with the object it's applied to selected, go to the Graphic Styles panel and click the plus sign to save it. Then it will work like a swatch you can save in a library and apply to other objects.

The annoying white line occurs because the artboard or tile is not in a pixel perfect position. So make sure before you make a tile, click pixel perfect first.

That's what I used to teach, but I think this new way I'm doing it has been more foolproof for me. Aligning to the pixel grid works sometimes, - but other times, I'll have everything aligned, and I'll look in pixel preview, and my pattern fill is showing a soft pixel at the edge.

There's a little magnet icon in the upper right corner of the window, or you can see it in the Properties panel with nothing selected. Snapping the art to the pixel grid is only one part, you also need to snap the artboard to the pixel grid. In artboard mode, you can use the x and y fields at the top of the window to position the artboard on an even number, not a decimal number - and do this with your unit of measure set to pixels. I'm moving away from this method because it's fussy, and takes a lot of steps. As a teacher, I've seen it confuse a lot of users. But it does work! 😊
