so I was reading a very good book called " The Battle for Bond" which documents the making of "Thunderball" and how that film right was awarded to a producer outside the official Bond franchise, and "Never Say Never Again" is a remake of "Thunderball" by that same producer. So Connery here is talking to Johnny Carson about how he dislikes scuba diving and being underwater, but in the original Thunderball 1960s film Bond spends an awful lot of time swimming under water and indeed Bond looks to be swimming beautifully underwater with his scuba diving gear, very graceful like a real pro, so how can that be? Well amazingly on "Thunderball" Connery had a perfect body double match who also happened to be a professional scuba diver with 30 years experience underwater, he did all the swimming in the underwater scenes for Connery, his physique is identical to Connery's , it really looks like Sean doing the swimming in Thunderball but it is not, Sean does a few close ups to complete the illusion, famously his diving mask changes colour from black to orange in one close up scene, so there is a certain irony here that Connery is talking about the audience not believing the narrative if an obvious stunt double is doing the action scenes, so the trick is to have a convincing stunt double!!! on Never Say Never again Connery's stunt double was Vic Armstrong, an expert horseman and fight arranger, he was also Harrison Ford's stunt double on the Indiana Jones films.

In more than one way, Never Say Never is closer to the Thunderball book than the Thunderball movie itself.

He wouldn't have been able to do another Bond movie. Never Say Never Again was a non-Eon production and there were lengthy court battles to try and stop it being made. Too bad Connery is doing promotion for THE WORST Bond film he ever starred in. Many of us think Never Say Never Again is a strong candidate for THE WORST Bond film ever made. Never Say Never Again was embarrassing. And that's saying something after the previous Bond film Connery did which was Diamonds Are Forever. I acknowledge Connery as the definitive Bond and four of his films were excellent (From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice) and the first was at least enjoyable but better than many of us give it credit for because it was the prototype Bond film. 1 Connery Bond film in the "official cycle" was bad (Diamonds Are Forever). Never Say Never Again (unofficial, not canon-acknowledged) was AWFUL. Moore had a low point or two in his Bond cycle, too, but nothing as bad as Never Say Never Again!
@jjryan13524 жыл бұрын
It also had low production values like the two Dalton films. Kinda cheezy.
@Fireglo4 жыл бұрын
@@jjryan1352 the two Dalton films are jam packed with stunts and special effects what are you talking about?
@thomaschacko63204 жыл бұрын
I'll respectfully disagree. "Never Say Never Again" not only featured one of Sean Connery's best performances but, in keeping with his wishes (and control of the production), focused more on character and plot. The villain was superb, without scars, metal teeth, an eyepatch, the ridiculous SPECTRE ring, or any other gimmicks. The action was spectacular, especially the motorcycle chase and the fight in the spa! The film moved at a much brisker pace than the somnambulistic "Thunderball," without the mechanical acting, overblown sets, and drawn-out underwater sequences. It was therefore, more in the spirit of Ian Fleming than anything Roger Moore pranced through - with the sole exception of his best film, "For Your Eyes Only." Connery's worst - coming on the heels of the FINEST Bond of all, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - was an expensive cartoon which laid the groundwork for the true "low points" of the series, such as that TV sitcom known as "Man With the Golden Gun." For an authentic Fleming atmosphere, check out "Dr No," "From Russia With Love," "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (starring the best Bond of all, George Lazenby), "For Your Eyes Only," "Licence To Kill," and Daniel Craig's "Casino Royale" and "Skyfall." A toast - with a vodka martini, shaken not stirred!
@AvengerII4 жыл бұрын
@@thomaschacko6320 Respectfully disagree back at you. You judge films on their own merits NOT by comparing them against the books! That's a losing proposition with Hollywood, anyway, and you'll just drive yourself nuts and sound like "one of those fans!" Two of the Connery Bond films just sucked, and good performance or not, his mere presence couldn't save those films. One solid performance does NOT a good movie make and Connery was phonining it in after the first three Bond films if you're going to pedantic about that. Cheap VFX, charmless bad guys, annoying Bond girls, and forgettable music -- these are the things that characterize Connery's last two Bond films. There's very little to recommend in Diamonds are Forever OR Never Say Never Again.
