Sean Payton's Cryptic Hint at Denver Broncos Next QB?

In an interview at the League Meeting Sean Payton fueled tons of Denver Broncos rumors as he talked about the QB position and said: "there are still a few possibilities relative to guys who are currently in this league or have played in this league." In this video we break down who are the "guys who HAVE" played in the league and what could that mean for the Denver Broncos? Could he have been referring to RGIII, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck or was it just an offhand comment that we shouldn't read more into?

Jarett Stidham is likely going to be the 2024 starter in Denver. Payton hinted at this when he signed him, & you can see by the way they have ignored this free agency class that he's going to do one of two things; 1) start Stidham, or 2) start a rookie. Payton is not a guy who wants to start a rookie. He had a chance to do that in 2006 when he had not one, not two, but THREE highly rated rookie QB prospects available to him with the #2 pick in the draft. He ignored all three of them to sign Brees, who at the time nobody else waned to sign. Stidham also fits the profile that Brees had in very specific ways. The last thing Payton would consider is bringing in some old washed up vet & wasting a season on that.

Going with Stidham makes the most sense. Drafting a Tight End, Offensive Lineman, or an impact Defensive player would be a better use of the BRONCOS first couple of picks. Take a quarterback in the THIRD or later rounds, would humble most QB’s... It’s NOT that NO one wanted Brees, Payton just got to him first. Though his height may have deterred some, Brees’ ability to lead the Chargers into the playoffs twice and with a 12-4 record made him desirable enough… Ironically, like Payton NOW, Schottenheimer then, thought he could just slot Philip Rivers in and become more successful. They did win 14 games one season with Rivers, but never made it close to being in the Super Bowl, while Brees obviously did. NOW Wilson is in a similar situation with the Steelers… 🤔
@user-zr4km5ns8t
@user-zr4km5ns8t Ай бұрын
@@superzero4250 That is incorrect that "they just got to him first". Brees had a devastating shoulder injury. Only two teams were interested, New Orleans & Miami. Brees failed his physical in Miami which is why NO was able to sign him. The rest of the league ignored him. This was a situation very similar to how Denver was able to sign Peyton Manning. The video link below is the most complete & thorough chronology I have seen on Brees & his entire history.If you don't want to watch all 43 minutes of this start it at the 16:30 mark and go till about 18:45. Not only was Brees damaged goods, but his five year resume in the NFL was WILDLY inconsistent. His 2004 season he made the pro bowl, but as the video also shows, he took a dip in 2005. NOBODY in the NFL was talking about Brees as a future NFL HOF quarterback at the time Sean Payton signed him. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epTKZY1verKleKs

@@user-zr4km5ns8t Thank you for that, it was an interesting take on the NFL career of Drew Brees… kzbin.info/www/bejne/epTKZY1verKleKssi=rvvtQGr-upmKuDTW However, nothing in the video discounts anything I wrote previously; at the [13:09] mark the video mentions how Brees’ performance was the third best in the NFL. Ironically very similar to Russell Wilson’s last season in Denver, actually eerily similar, virtually identical… Also, at the [17:25] mark, it only mentions the two MAIN teams that were the most keen on signing Brees, the Dolphins and Saints. Other teams were interested to varying degrees… The Chargers in 2005 even offered Brees a FIVE year $50M contract. $2M guaranteed, and the rest incentive based on performance. The Saints offered $60M for SIX years, most of it guaranteed, obviously a better deal… The Dolphins were apprehensive due to the medical report, true. In fact the decision to NOT sign Brees was credited for the reason Saban left the Dolphins and the NFL for the ALABAMA job in college… Amazing how history repeats itself, only NOW Sean Payton is playing the role of Marty Schottenheimer, and Wilson in a Brees like circumstance… 🤔
@user-zr4km5ns8t
@user-zr4km5ns8t Ай бұрын
@@superzero4250 Well the first thing you said was wrong, which is that the Saints simply beat everyone else to the punch, which they did not. You're also making several assumptions here. First, it's speculation how many others were interested. The fact is, only TWO teams even had him in for a physical, so that disputes that idea. If any others were truly interested, it didn't go further than discussions apparently. Second, yes he was ranked as the 3rd best QB in 2004, but you bypassed the part of the video which reports on the way he slipped in 2005. His 2005 performance was down, & it was followed by an injury so severe that Brees himself later said he doubted if he would ever play again. You also ignored the part of the video which described the long losing streak the Chargers had with him in which he was not very good. Inconsistent would be the proper word to describe him. If you want to look at what he was "ranked" (always a rather subjective stat), you can also find a bunch of other QBs nobody thinks were that great who were "ranked" highly in any one year. Let's take a look at 2002 for example, when Drew Bledsoe was "ranked" 2nd overall. Who else was up there? Ranked #1 was Rich Gannon. Huh? Those two were above Peyton Manning (3rd), & right behind him came journeymen like Kerry Collins (who BTW was being coached up by Sean Payton that year), Daunte Culpepper (5th) who threw 18 TDs and 23 picks. Rounding out the top 10 were Brady (6th), Trent Green (7th), Farve (8th), Aaron Brooks (9th) & Steve McNair (10th). How many people do you think consider Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins, Daunte Culpepper, Trent Green and Rich Brooks in the same league with Manning, Brady & Farve? That would likely be none. Also, if you look at the way Brees played in San Diego, don't forget he had some help. LaDainian Tomlinson & Antonio Gates were there. He SHOULD have been good. I get the fact that he was offered a good contract before his injury. What did the Chargers offer after the shoulder? "An insult" is how the video termed it. Payton offered him a good one, but nobody else did. There is no way you can make a case for the rest of the NFL having the first clue that this guy was going to be a HOF quarterback. The Chargers had already drafted his replacement in Rivers two years earlier. That says a lot more than what a statistics ranking does. Bottom line; Brees was coached into the HOF by Sean Payton. There's nothing wrong with that, & clearly the grit, determination & hard work he put in were critical factors, but Payton is the guy who guided his career from pretty good QB & highly questionable medical risk to the HOF. He deserves huge credit for that.

I’d be shocked if we signed someone out of retirement, the only possibility I could see is Teddy Bridgewater because of Sean’s familiarity with him, but it seems unnecessary when Jarrett Stidham could probably give us the same results as a starter or backup. I’d imagine it’ll just be Stidham v Nix or McCarthy in training camp with a slight possibility of them brining in a guy like Tannehill just to add more experience and competition.

I wouldnt mind cam. Give us something different. A daring, strong arm duel threat qb with a good running game to pair wirh hos running abilities. Thats 2-3 rb on the field at a time according to the package. Even itsmf its a spread package you still have to account for cam as an rb at qb. Atleast our offense wont be one dimensional whete defense can just play coversge because the running game wasnt a threat. Also cam had enough time off to watch snd analys the the game to where he shoukd be able to see even more clearly on the field for better decision making. Atleast it wont be a dink and dump off the the rb all day like it was last season. Cam gets us to the playoffs. Book it! Sutton, Mims, Josh Reynolds, javonte, jaleel, perine and cam..... hopefully dulchic at TE. Let's go!
