Americans LOVED This Car But Toyota Didn't Care - Scion xB Story

Despite its age, the first generation xB (Toyota bB) is still a common sight on the streets today thanks to its excellent reliability, practicality, and affordability. That's what was intended of it. It was successful as it was, until Toyota thought that it should be less polarizing and well, more American.

I buy, fix and sell 1st Gen xBs people still love them. I sold one an hour after listing it; I sold another to someone driving halfway across the country to buy it because it had low miles. They are easy to work on, parts are inexpensive, they are incredibly reliable and have a timeless style. I feel this will be a sought after classic to the likes of the VW Bettle.

I don’t care what anyone says but the 2nd Scion XB is an absolutely amazing car for the money it is affordable, it’s comfortable, it roomy, it’s good for hauling a lot of weight in the back ( mine probably hauls more than 1 ton worth of food and doesn’t even squat very much), its a good motor, they never let you down, and overall it’s a great car oh and I almost forgot about gas prices how about after driving a car for a week about 400 miles a week my car needs 45 dollars with these crazy prices and when it’s empty empty 50 like how can you complain about that. Great car for the money I don’t get why people don’t love the 2nd gen’s like they should they are better than the 1st gen in many ways but to be fair I don’t hate the first gen and I have never driven or owned one before I have had 7 2nd gen Scion XBs in the last 2-3 years so I’m a big fan

I purchased a white 2013 XB new in 2013. I can get up to 43mpg on a short 25 mile country road trip with only a few minor hills with nobody pushing me. Not bad for WV driving. Only 47,000 miles in ten years of driving in spring, summer and fall. I park it for the winter. I will not let this car go. I have an element for winter and a black santa cruz as a toy that has never been driven in snow, rain or a a wet road(1500 miles in 16 months of ownership).

I lived in California when the first gen of xB came out in early 2000’s. It was VERY popular among young people. I personally didn’t like it because it looked funky and seemed to associate with kids who loved modifying their cars. Circumstances made me own a used one well after it was discontinued. I was in love with it right away and wish I bought a new one when it came out.

2004 xB here, but I bought it in a test market in San Jose before they went live other places. The California DMV listed it as a 2003 model because it wasn't in the database when I got it. This is still my daily driver and it's at 220k and going strong. I think Toyota killed it because it was *too* good. It wasn't helping them sell cars -- it was like the vw bug of its day. And holy crap, the paint job -- it's still factory perfect 21 years later.

I own three of them. One of them is a 2012 parts vehicle that a tree fell on. And it was bad. Still, I drove it home almost 500 miles just like that. I bought it for the engine and transmission for my car which had the oil consumption issue that I have largely solved by piston soaking. So the engine in my car refuses to die at 247,000 miles. My wife drives a 2008, and it has 297,000 on it. Both cars will go anywhere. I have owned mine personally for 13 years, and she has owned hers for seven. They very rarely give us any trouble. Oh, and the Parts 2012? It's wearing all the junk parts from the 2008, and I put the interior in my car. It's got a clear title so I pushed the roof back out and I'm going to lift it and cut part of it off. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with it. It has 80,000 miles on it so it should run a long long time

@@SpeedyGeneralMotorsINC it’s because they love the more JDM xB1, it was pure square, it was original, it was much different than others, it was hip af, it’s fun to drive, and it was the closest one we have for small box cars like in Japan. Once it hits 2008, they loose their pure JDM touch of the xB1. That’s why the sales sells so well before it hit 2008.

I've recently come to the conclusion that I have inherited an '09 xB. My father-in-law loaned it to me when I was going to school last year and every attempt I've made to return it to him he refuses and says that he'd rather have me drive it than have it sit as he didn't drive it much. Now he's at the point where he really shouldn't be driving. I gotta admit it really isn't my cup of tea. I find the visibility terrible, blind spots on both rear corners and the short windshield keeps me from seeing stop lights if I'm first in line. I also find the dash configuration maddening, center mounted gauges make me feel unbalanced. Despite those and other complaints it does have it's merits. It's fairly peppy but doesn't feel fast, I'm usually 5-10 over the speed limit before I know it. The head room is AMAZING, I'm 6ft and easily have 8" from top of my head to the ceiling. Back seat has a ton of leg room, fitting 4 large adults is hilariously easy. And good cargo space. My FIL says it's his favorite car he's ever owned so I know I won't be selling for some time, too much sentimentality wrapped up in it. So I've decided to start doing some small quality of life improvements such as upgrading to a modern head unit with wireless carplay, a backup camera, and roof rack. It is a reliable little car, is inexpensive to operate and never complains. Plus it was free and only has 71k miles on it!

@@SpeedyGeneralMotorsINC Quoting myself here: "blind spots on both rear corners and the short windshield keeps me from seeing stop lights if I'm first in line." The large rear pillars take up a lot of real estate and block my sight lines when I need to check my corners and the mirrors don't make up for it. Installing a backup camera has largely solved that issue and I would recommend doing so. If you don't experience these issues, that's great, however this is my experience.

I owned an 06 for 9 years...from 35k miles to 175k miles. Great freaking car. 5 adults, no problem...a moped and a pit bike, easy...2x8 sheet of plywood...yep that fit too. Dirt cheap to keep running, held up to snow/salt without rusting out. Did well in the snow. Just a solid, all around capable rig. No cruise control was my only real complaint. Had the 2nd gen followed the same formula, I would have bought it when replacing my 06. I ended up getting a 2016 Corolla. It does what I need, but without all the fun and utility that the xb gave. Despite the xb having 40 fewer hp than my Corolla, it was just as quick, due to weighing 800 pounds less. That's what sucks...USA regulations changed and now small cars are bigger/heavier...even though they have less interior space.

okay there's something critical you missed this video, the main reason the 1st gen got phased out was changing safety standards in the usa. 2007 was the when the new rules went into effect and the 1st gen was not able too meet those standards. it was a short run in the usa and toyota often breezes over how well they did in the us market.

First gen Saturns were terrific little cars with a loyal following. I remember quite a few of them with over 200,000 miles at a time when that wasn’t the norm for American made vehicles. It wasn’t until GM started marketing Opels as Saturns that they became less imaginative, less reliable and more expensive, which helped lead to their extinction.

Sounds so simple but so many people misread the situation. I had a 1st Gen xB but I understand why they did what they did with Gen2. Young people are not looking for maximum convenience and practicality. Older people are, which is why the 1st gen was such a hit with boomers. The younger generation places more emphasis on style. Gen 2 was also still more than practical enough. They had to beef up Gen 2 to keep up with changing crash protection safety standards that Gen 1 would never meet due to its much thinner shell. The Kia Soul is much more akin to a Gen 2 Scion than the Gen 1. The Kia certainly has no more practicality over the Gen 2 xB

Lots of interesting info. I have a used '06. I wish they'd make an updated version of them so I could get a new one 😆 I don't really like the later versions.. I'm at about 175,000 miles. In my experience I will just say I wish they just used slightly taller & robust wheels/suspension/tires/tyres; It's too easy to bend a rim around here, & i smack my head getting in/out sometimes 😂 And I think the Alternator mount could've been 2 points, mine will not stay tight, belt always squeaks at first but stops when accellerate (yes even checked by AAA mechanics) but it still works. The AC does not, & i watched a vid on here where he wore out the warranty on AC's replacing it 3 times before giving up. Something about the clutch for the AC motor doesnt disengage when not in use, so it burns itself up every time. Would've been nice, none of my cars have had AC 😂 Its ok tho. Pretty good on gas, average 18 winter 24 summer. 15 min. 26 max average (no way to tell how much its getting while running, hiway probably about 30)

I had the same squeaking belt problem and I also kept tightening the Alternator mount, but the noise always came back...until I bought a OEM belt at a Toyota dealer (about the same price as aftermarket), problem solved. Wiper blades will also be much better OEM.

1st gen owners what do you guys pay to fill up your car with these insane gas prices and what state? Here in Florida my 2nd gen takes 45 dollars almost empty and empty empty it takes 50 which is really good since I drive about 400 miles a week and it lasts me a week. Let me know 1st gen owners maybe I’m wrong about them maybe the 1st gen is just as good

Public transportation should be better here in Los Angeles I also look forward to future small EVs that can charge fast and font in the small parking spots on the street. Enforcing small cars by tax incentives coul promote more small cars too. IDK Great video.

💯 public transportation in LA needs a big upgrade and love the idea of small EVs. There’s too much focus on bigger EVs with more range that hardly ever gets utilized. Thank you!

Some of this I disagree with. Saying the xB2 is "less practical" is total BS. It has almost 70 cubic feet of cargo area compared to xB1 which has 44, so in fact it's a lot more practical. Since It also has 50% more power and although not rated to tow (the Toyota Rukus which is the same exact car in Australia has a 1500lb capacity) tows stuff just fine. I tow my band trailer and two utility trailers when I need to. Try that with an xB1. Ain't happening. Toyota's marketing campaign for the xB was weak to say the least. Like they simply didn't care. Does anyone recall seeing a commercial for it? I don't. Kia's was brilliant in realizing this and it is OBVIOUS they absolutely stole the car's overall design. The Gen 2 xB in terms of practicality wins here too. It still has more power and much more usable cargo space since it's more square and the roof doesn't roll off. Plus it's a freakin Kia which in my eyes isn't a car I'd own. 13.5 years with my xB car and the biggest repair? An alternator.

The 2AR-FE has the worst fuel economy. I got a 2016 Scion TC with a Manual Transmission, I remember driving it the first year I bought it in 2023 the gas would go down fast on short distance drive. The 2AZ-FE has better gas mileage the same engine my 2007 Camry has with modifications and it also has a Manual Transmission.

I had a first gen tC with automatic. It got mid 30s MPG, pretty much what I expected. It was a good car but it was clearly built to be cheap, it looked it inside.

Geez. Even your come backs are terrible. Take my constructive criticism to heart. You have good content. Just present it without the throwaway jokes. Look at “my old car” KZbin videos if you want to see how a relatively ‘bland’ presenter is able to still deliver high quality content.

Miss those days Miami event, Group 1 for the United event. They trashed my paint making the ad on my Torched penny B and Toyota totally repainted it. Lot of memories and great friends made
