For me the mixolydian is like being on a bus happy because you have finally gotten angry enough to leave a bad situation. The phrygian is like you're on a bus and realizing you're on the wrong one and you're lost and don't know what you're going to do.

Dorian is best described as bittersweet IMHO. Also one question - why were the first three modes you showed the "major" modes and the others minor modes? What makes them minor/major and what would happen if I play a "major" mode over a minor chord and vice versa?

Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian are called "major" because they have the major 3rd interval in them. Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian are called "minor" because they begin with a minor 3rd interval. Locrian also begins with a minor 3rd, but has a b5 also, so it is sometimes called "diminished". As to what would happen if you played a major mode over a minor chord? Well, try it! And have fun with it.

Lydian = good cheer, optimism, subimity, friendliness, laughter, love and song. Dorian = sleepiness, lethargy, laziness, slowness, mental dullness, forgetfulness, calmness, internal equanimity, well being. Mixolydian = solidity, firmness, steadfastness, rhythm, but with a certain indolent tenaciity.

This is arguably the most important modes video ever made. Hey, I realized only recently that Stich and I have the exact same playing position! Why did *you* choose that position Ian? For me it's simply that I can't rotate my wrist far enough to play horizontally, but I found the Classical position a little awkward, so I hybridized the two.

My understanding of modes in this key of G example: I would play Ionian from the G on the 3rd fret of the low E string and dorian from the A at the 5th fret of the low E string and so on. In the video he is staying at the same area of the neck. Is he basically just using the G as the root note for Ionian and the A in the same area on the neck for the dorian and so forth?

Randy kahn Nope! In this video they’re sticking to the same root note and building the mode from it. This is essentially changing keys, as each mode would be derived from a different Major scale. What your talking about would be modes derived from the same key. Also very important to understand!

One thing I have noticed in all your mode videos you have done is that you don't ever talk about while it is a G chord, it might actually originate in a different scale (which I think would be helpful for a lot of people trying to wrap their heads around initially)... For example (and I totally get that you know all these things) G lydian you mention has a sharp 4... But it would be helpful perhaps to also mention that it stems from the D scale... Or that G mixolydian stems from the C scale, etc - and that the actual scales aren't part of the actual G scale any more... It might help them start to put all the pieces of the puzzle together...

Another way to hear the modes, and easier way I believe because you don't have to change the scale. Use the G Major diatonic scale. Play a G major chord with it, you have major. Play a a minor chord, you have dorion, play a b minor chord with it, you have Phrydgion.....etc

Yeah you can do a diminished arpeggio over an otherwise minor or major chord progression (like a B diminished run over an A minor progression)

Dminished simply means LESS...There term is use on the 4th and 5th note of the mode ( for quick reference) There's 9 parallel diatonic scales with 7 modes each The MAJOR scale only has 1-ea HALF diminished.....( locrian) It's HALF becuase from the b5 to b7 = WW = maj3 interval It's not fully symtrical The other scales Harmonic min has 4-ea FULL DIMINISHED The....II. IV. Vi. VII You can alter these chords to diminished...if you want. They're SYMMETRICAL..... Picture a DIAMOND shape..with 4 equal sides. It's just ALL b3 (WH) intervals A Harmonic minor B, D, F, G# B dim..... Locrian with Maj6 .. 1, b3, b5, 6 D dor #4 dorian #4 1, b3, #4, 6 F lydian #2 1, #2, #4, 6 G# Mix#1 ( converted to Locrian loc b4, bb7 ) 1, b3, b5, bb7 NOTICE the b4 or diminished 4th. It has the same pitch as Maj3...but there's also a b3 in the mode You can also play it as AGMENTED....1, b4, b6 ALL WW or Maj3 interval.....G#, C, E Augmented modes are also SYMMETRICAL.. Picture a 3 sided TRIANGLE...with 3 equal sides. The C HARMONIC MAJOR also has 4-ea possible FULL diminished. II, IV, vi, VII Notice it's b6 or Ab. instead of G# D, F, Ab, B D dor b5.........1, b3, b5, 6 F lydiab b3 1 b3, #4, 6 Ab lydian aug #2 .... 1 ,#2, #4, 6 B loc bb7 1, b3, b5, bb7 The Hungarian MAJOR also has possible FULL diminished FROM the I, #II, #IV, VI..or 1, #2, #4, 6 Notice the Augmented 4 tor #4 The terms just helps you....Augmented simply means ADD , more or sharp You can also augment the 3rd.....becuase the 4th had be augmented example... 1.........2........3..4..........5...........6...........7..8 1.............#2....#3 #4.........#5 6............7 8 Its just one of the modes from those parallel scales The Major scale INTERVAL is the REFERENCE. You just have to learn them...If you dont know what the INTERVALS are HOW in the hell are you going to PLAY THEM,,to hear what they sound like? YOu can use the diminished chord to help you shift keys or blend other scales. Just look for modes with possible diminished....then simply modulate/substitute. From the TONIC as dim....Lydian b3....Harmonic min b5 , Melodic min b5.. example....lets say you were in the key of D minor... you can shift to C minor/ E bMAJOR....simply by slide DOWN 2 frets. The D will be a locrian..ish Or it can also be the II of C melodic minor D dorian b2....which as a possible Min7 chord or If you where in G MAJOR/E min...you can modulate to the key of F minon simply be sliding down 2 frets... or you can play the C as a minor chord...to SOUND different or C dim....D# dim into E minor ( E Harmonic minor or G Harmonic MAJOR) or you can even BLEND it...sort of chromatically FRom E minor ... A min..Bmin...C Maj ..C#dim D Maj ..D # dim....into E min The C# dim is from the E melodic minor scale. The VI and VII are HALF possible diminished chords. Aeo b5 Loc b4 Ion b3 ( melodic min) dor b2 phy b1 ...converrted to Lydian augmented or...Ion #4, #5 lyd b7 mix b6
