Despite the rain I go for a walk on the mountainside where once a street of miners cottages were demolished because they had no electricity or water. The council thought it was cheaper to demolish the houses and relocate the residents to the nearby village.

Here in west wales I was friends with an older lady who lived in a tiny fishing hamlet. She hated the slate roof on her home, as it rattied in the wind. She loved her old roof made of turf and bracken. In the 20s it blew off one night while she was in a long labour with her second son. Despite the gale force winds and rain, the neighbours rallied and the men all went out and cut a new turf roof from the hillside. They had it on the cottage in time for the delivery of a healthy boy. She loved that roof. Lovely lady, her grandson still lives in the house and still fishes.

Hi Sean, I am really enjoying your videos. At the moment it is 7pm here in Australia, it is 32 degC and watching you walk in the rain all rugged up makes me envious, we are having a hot and humid summer. Wales looks so interesting and I love your shops, the fact that you can get Sunday dinner delivered is marvellous and it looks very nice. Your butchers and green grocer look like something out of my childhood, your breakfast looked delicious the other day, all we have is a huge shopping centre which is soul less by comparison. No wonder you are happy and content, I feel very peaceful and relaxed watching your videos, you’re doing a great job. Carol🇦🇺

The story of everyone in the village waiting up for news that the baby had been safely delivered made me cry. How poignant, as well, to hear of the way television changed the interactions between people when they moved into their new, wired houses. What a very profound effect from what could seem, at first glance, to be a minor change (going from not having a TV to having one). Lovely video, as usual. I'm in Canada, usually up late enough to catch your uploads just before bed and they always bring a sense of slowness and calm.

Thank you for your videos and the history you show us of the older days in Wales,I grew up in my Grandparents house in England ,but the house had no toilets or bathrooms or even a fridge ,My Grand dad grew his own food in his large garden and surrounded in countryside and farms and feral cats to feed I loved those times .Such a shame its all modern estates now.I must say you have a most soothing calm manner and voice about you, look forward to the next video.

us Welsh are all children of the mountains, valleys and the sea. even on a dull day there is natural beauty all around, minutes from the front door. it was lovely to see the small birds almost following you up the track. it's worthwhile carrying a small container with some assorted bird food (seeds, suet pellets, peanuts, etc) to leave around and eventually the birds will get used to you and flock around when you leave some food for them 🙂 i hope you enjoyed your lunch 🙂

My father always told me it's already broken and as long as you don't take a hammer to it you're not going to break it more trying to fix it. The stories are really interesting and the views that you have in the rain are lovely. Occasionally I'll take the time and drive the 60 miles to the forest and the stress just falls from you when you finally get into the trees. You probably added 15 or more extra years to your life getting out of the city. Beautiful vlog here's to 50 more years of making vlogs😊

Interesting about the cottages. Similar story in my town Watford (near London). A row of cottages built next to a brick works had no gas, electricity and a well for water. The toilet was flushed using soft water. which is rainwater collected from the roof and stored in a tank. Mind you they were demolished just after the end of WW2. Same reason. Cheaper to rehouse the families than refurb the cottages.

Same for my Grandparents, in the east end of London. Cheaper to move them out into 'New Towns' - community all split up, which had seen them through everything. Both were born before the Great War, then young children during the Spanish flu pandemic, old enough to know it was serious but too young to do much other than learn to do errands. They got married just before WW2.

I love the idea of having a sunday roast delivered, fantastic & kudos for giving the ipad repair a go. Many thanks Sean, i'm going to watch it again now & i just spotted in the comments that you are building an Archive channel so i am definitely going to go over & subscribe to that also. This was another wonderfully enjoyable Vlog Sean, to hear the history of the coal mines and the little cottages that eventually got knocked down was heartwarming to me. I think the mountain only allows certain things and it’s not allowing cowboys and what not 🙄 it’s so beautiful and magical that the mountain knows those gimmicks won’t do. How lovely as well to meet a viewer and to hear her story I personally love to hear those things. Sorry your iPad didn’t get fixed but it was like watching ASMR to me very relaxing I’d of sat and watch the whole thing if it was longer. Thank you for another relaxing time I find it’s helped me so much with my anxiety. I can’t wait for the next one whatever it involves. Hubby and I are ready with our cup of tea. Have a super lovely day young man ❤

Also I mentioned the series Tales From The Green Valley (filmed in Wales in the 00s, a small group of historians recreated 1600s life in an old stone farmhouse from the time period) and wanted to let people know it's on KZbin. I won't link it because I'm unsure of the rules but just search for it, it's easy to find. very relaxing and feelgood show, much like Sean's!

Many people all over the U/K were pushed out of their homes in the 1960s lots of them put into high rise flats. A lifestyle they did not understand or need . ALL sense of community was lost and trouble started. This was done by by fools who thought they knew best. So sad 😢

The story of the land and homes, reminds me of something we went through here. Cumberland island national seashore, off the coast of Georgia. Back in late 60s, my husbands mother bought land there, before it became what it is today. Many homes were there. No bridges, stores, mail, nothing. My husband built a home and then eminent domain came… many homes were condemned, including his. Many were bulldozed. He went on to represent himself and others. Some got a life estate. 1972 was the beginning of the park. When he died 11 years ago, I had 90 days to be gone.barging uhaul back and forth. It was a life estate for his life. Many went away in 2010, sone will keep reverting back as people die. It’s mostly vacant now, like our home sitting falling in. All the work we did on it, doesn’t increase your bottom line. Unless you go through something like having your home taken, it can be a difficult thing to understand. Yes, I’m not sure that was progress for those folks with televisions, etc. it’s interesting how there’s been attempts to develop the land through the years there… seems it would have been made into a park or conservancy. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sean thank you for another lovely video, I am slowly catching up with the ones I missed before finding you. Such an interesting an lovely walk. I got bit emotional thinking of All the villagers staying awake till baby was born safely! I am in my late 70's an also think the art of conversation is lost. Younger visitors are always surprised that I turn the television off. When they arrive or put it on mute if they not staying. I find it quite rude to be competing with the television in others homes while speaking. So needles say I never stay long. Mind you come think on.happen it be a ploy to get shut o me. 😂😂😂. Eeee that's given me food for thought. Oh an talking of food. Your dinner from farmhouse looked right grand. Proper Rib sticking grub on a cold day. Take care Sean, blessings an prayers sent for you.from Sonja in Southport 😊

The joys of KZbin, eh Ken. U can watch all the walks to come as the daffs show themselves in the sunshine. Its a nice supportive group here in this 'collective' of subscribers. Plus Sean has shown he doesn't tolerate bad behaviour, so rude or negative bods tend to go elsewhere. Possibly try take a vitamin D supplement if u don't, as I realised I needed to do so, after being indoors more than usual for a period of time.

Ah! I'm gently envious of you, Sean!! A delivered Sunday lunch from a local farm and a misty walk with the birds!! I think we all realize that projects and developments tend to spoil a place. I think of the many stories I've heard over the years of Americans moving to rural areas only to have an industrial or housing development built after a decade or two which spoiled the area. "Fern hill" must be a popular idea in Wales. Do you remember Dylan Thomas' "Fern Hill"? "Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green, The night above the dingle starry, Time let me hail and climb Golden in the heydays of his eyes, And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns...."

My mother and all her family from Fernhill my two elder brothers were born there. They had electricity and gas. They were very basic cottages 2 up, 2 down, with an outside toilet. The cottages were owned by the NCB and they demolished them because they were in poor conditions. The Council had built new properties in Brynhenllan and Mt Libanus estate so most residents were moved there in the late 60's early.70's. My mother left in February 1970 and I was born in April 1970. They have the zip wire in the one in North Wales near Snowdonia. There's also an adventure place in the caves underneath as well but I think something like that would spoil where you are. It suits where it is because it was slate mine & is surrounded by all the piles of slate etc. It would ruin the scenery there though I think.

I hope I'm not offending you in any way by asking these questions and be sure and tell me it's none of my business if I am. Fondly, Dorothy.

He'll have a stand/tripod to put the camera on to film & set it up so he can then film himself walking towards it. Either that or it's all Welsh magic from the hills & we all get to enjoy it😉☺️

Sometimes it’s just magic because I stay in the spot and the camera flies ahead of me, check out my Fairy Pools video.

Hello Sean. You need a waterproof hat I’d say . The wooly one must get soaked after a while . That was a good walk , even if it rained . And ' horizontal " rain is also frequent here in French Brittany .I hate it because it stings your face while you walk . Have a good day 😊

The perfect place for Rusty! Seems just right... Good history as well. My dad would have loved that as we was an English historian as well as an American Western historian.

Where you said about seeing the bull there was a small tree with what looked like dark red/brown leaves. Do you know what species it is? Thanks, Irene

My great granny Aberfan would not let Electricity be installed in her terraced house because it was dangerous and could blow the house up in 1965+ until after her sister down the street had it installed (and her sister'' grandchildren were killed in the Aberfan disaster in 1966 when the coal tip fell on the school ) and i remember going to her house when i was about 5-6 and she still did not have Electric and when she did she died about 4-6 months later.

How interesting about the cottages. Such a shame they didn't want to run utilities up there for the families already there. I suspect they would have been a lot happier to have stayed in their cottages. I wondered if there was a local electrical/computer shop near you? It probably wouldn't cost much to mend your ipad.

Laughing at your matter-of-fact comment about the direction that the rain travels in Wales. That brightened up a dreary day here. 😂
