I thought to get the 2000 lumen again, you just need to let it cool down. So you do not need to recharge to get 2000 again. I agree with you on which one I would choose.

Btw one thing is it just me or does the s2r ii baton and the pro look the same in lumens. I think it is do to the flood light of the baton. Also the light color looks better on the s2r ii than the pro or is that just the video
@ohroonoko
@ohroonoko 5 жыл бұрын
I own both. The Pro is in no way inferior or overpriced compared to the S2RII. I think those arguments stem from an expectation that the evolution to the Pro should be purely linear in perceived brightness and runtime. But this light has a different character. The clue is in the larger and more shallow head. Those 850 extra lumens combined with a larger diameter and more shallow head in the Pro give it a wider, brighter, floodier dispersion of light than the S2RII in every mode, and that's what separates the Pro. The Pro has a beautiful light dispersion that I think is rare in 18650 lights. Most lights have a brighter hotspot and the light falls off fast away from it. Therefore when recommending between these two, I ask if they prefer a more of a spot, or more of a flood. Also, the low 0.5 lumen in the S2RII is good, I thought I would prefer this to the 5 lumen low setting of the Pro; however, that wider and beautiful soft dispersion makes the low setting a real pleasure to use. As you described early in the video, the physics of light fall-off of light is not 1:1, it is inverse-squared (not a "perception" ; look up the inverse-square law of light which photographers use for flash photography). Therefore the 5 lumens in the Pro, though brighter, doesn't appear 10x brighter than the .5 of the S2RII; it appears only twice as bright. But the advantage is that it is a far more useful low setting because of that beautiful wide dispersion. Baton Pro FTW!
@GearedTowardGear1

Like I said, it all comes down to personal preference and opinion. We can agree to disagree. I don’t prefer the beam pattern on the Pro. I prefer the beam pattern on the S2R. For my needs for EDC the S2R, or most Olights for that matter have plenty of spill for me.
@lowammo
@lowammo 5 жыл бұрын
The pro is not worth a $100+ more than the s2r 2 if you already have the s2r 2. If you don't have either, it's %100 personal preference. And remember the pro has less battery life to disperse the floodier 2000 lumens.
@ohroonoko
@ohroonoko 5 жыл бұрын
@@lowammo "less battery life"? The Pro has 3500 mAh CAPACITY vs 3200 in the S2R2. You're comparing RUNTIMES not battery life, based on a comparison between a focused beam and a flood beam. If the focused beam and the flood beam have the same candela, then the flood beam will require more power. If the focused beam and the flood beam consumed the same power then the flood will have much less candela than the focused beam. It's just physics.

My biggest take away on this 21 minute video is the pocket clip from an S1R! But then again I am an Olight fan and have many of them. I got the Green S2R II and am currently testing the .05 lumen so two months from now we will see. New Years 2020. But I am at arms for my next Olight, either an M2R Pro or a Seeker Pro.(at least both these lights use the 21700 battery) I am planning to get one of these for my future trip where I will be going third world traveling with zero light and wet conditions. I currently EDC an S2 and yes on a daily basis I really only need 500 Lumens. Great informative video.

I’ve used my original S2 constantly since buying it the day it was launched via “Battery Junction” website. Still carry it nightly for work, along with a blue Baton Pro & a brown S1R-ii. The Baton Pro has become my “GoTo” exactly because of the BROAD beam 600 lumen mode - PERFECT for much of my tasks at work! The S1R gets attached to my cap bill for hands-free close work. Absolutely LOVE the magnetic end caps!

Ok here we go .... The S2r baton 2 in my opinion is great it’s my second one as the first one I gifted it to a friend and wished I didn’t , I also own the s1r 2 but the runtimes are not as good as the s2r2 , so yes I agree having 400 lumens for 4 hours is insane and a lot of light, even though the pro is2,000 I too would rather have 2 minutes , but once the light cools down you can go to turbo again, but you will only use turbo if you where in a open area so the practicality is 400 lumens.

Great point about the lumen perception to the eye. I've known that for years and more people need to understand that. It always made more sense to me to have less lumens and more battery life with better low mode spacing and also longer turbo times. The other thing with that is the harder you pull amps out of a battery the less efficient it is. So you loose more power and decrease run time with those 2000 lumen flashlights pulling 5-6amps in turbo. I'm still waiting for a flashlight manufacturer to made a double brightness mode spacing. To me it would be from moon to high: 1 lumen 4 lumen 16 lumen 64 lumen 256 lumen Turbo 1024 lumen. All doubling modes in brightness would be great!
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 жыл бұрын
That mode spacing looks good! Essentially by doing it that way you are multiplying the lumens by 4x so the light would “appear” roughly twice as bright with each mode. I love it!! Thanks for watching!!
@practicalguy973
@practicalguy973 5 жыл бұрын
@@GearedTowardGear1 After thinking about it I guess it would be too many modes and annoy some people being 6 brightness levels but it could be hold from off for moonlight 1 lumen and double click for turbo leaving 4lm-256lm as only 4 modes to cycle through when the flashlight is on. What's also interesting is the law of diminishing returns with knowing that lumen rule. It means that all the flashlights I own that are 1000 lumen turbo and all have a 500 approx lumen high mode as the next lowest is not that much difference in brightness to the eye between but using 500lm is doubling the run time of turbo!

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Although I didn’t specifically mention it (and should have), some of you may have picked up on the floodiness of the beam on the Baton Pro. It was certainly designed to be more of a flood light and less of an “all-purpose” beam like the S2R. My personal preference is for the more (in my opinion) versatile beam like on the S2R which provides a good combination of throw and spill/flood. If you LIKE a flood type beam pattern you may prefer the Baton Pro. When I mentioned the 2,000 lumens stepping down after a short duration I said that you won’t get turbo again until it’s recharged. I misspoke, what I should have said is that once the thermal regulator cools down sufficiently you will then have access to turbo gain for a short time until it heats up again and so on...
@cardinalfang7725
@cardinalfang7725 5 жыл бұрын
Good you pointed that out because I thought it was real obvious. The Pro lit up much more of your backyard, covered more area, and was still pretty strong on the shed. It's definitely a flood light as opposed to a spot. I'm not a "Fanboy" as many of these people call themselves. I agree with you GTG, I think there are better lights, but it's the blue color, that's it, it's blue. The blue Pro sold out like a bat out of hell. They collect every color of the same flashlight and display 'em. Hey, I don't get it, but it's their money not mine. More power or lumens to 'em.

The step-down time from turbo listed on the packaging is an estimate. In real world testing, turbo can last a lot longer than that. It isn't a 60-second timer step-down; it is a thermal-triggered step down. Maybe you can follow up and test the real world step-down times on various flashlights in a future video.
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 жыл бұрын
It shouldn’t be an estimate. It should be based on the manufacturers testing using (usually) ANSI standards. I’ve tested step down on dozens of lights and have never found a light that runs SO much longer than the advertised time to consider it statistically significant. I’ve had several run shorter, and several run longer, but generally no more than 10-20% longer. Even if I did test it, it would be in an uncontrolled environment, so any results would be anecdotal at best.

@@GearedTowardGear1 Correct me if I'm wrong but because the baton pro is more of a flood than the s2r baton 2 it uses those extra lumens to "fill" that wider beam with more/brighter light? I could swear I heard or read that somewhere...anyhow I like most things flashlight (FLASH LIGHT NERD LOL) and recently Olight has had my attention to the tune of just over $850 spent in the past month in the Olight store (I got bored with Fenix my other favorite brand), but talking about the baton series I like all the baton series but my favorite would be the original S2, S2R, or the S30R, I own a couple of each of those and like them because you can spin the pocket clip around to cover the switch and protect it from turning on (electronic lockout doesn't do nearly as good)or hurting the switch while in your pocket (better than unscrewing the tailcap also because you don't compramise the waterproof factor.

Yes you are right about the Baton Pro. It was certainly designed to be more of a flood light and less of an “all-purpose” beam like the S2R. My personal preference is for the more (in my opinion) versatile beam like on the S2R which provides a good combination of throw and spill/flood for EDC. Very good information, but after watching this and passing on the Ti pro version a few weeks ago, i changed my mind and bought it thinking i could return it(for $23 more than it was). I really like the titanium otherwise id be ok with the other/cheaper variations. After testing them in the dark, my overall favorite is the s2rII because the beam is more pleasing to the eye. Aside from that, they have totally different emitters. The pro almost looks like a mini seeker 2 proportionally. The opaque reflector lends to a more spilly light which I can definitely appreciate for certain tasks(mainly hands-free usage when I need more coverage). The S2r is definitely more of a traditional mirror reflector, although its very shallow so its not throwing light any kind of serious distances. It just focuses the light instead of refracting it, so I would say apples to oranges. Different tools for different jobs. From an EDC standpoint, maybe one is better than the other. but I use my lights for so many things including work so I can't think that unilaterally. I'm surprised they didn't make the S2rII out of ti though since it seems like there has been an overwhelming demand for it ever since that run of Ti S1r's. Not sure if I'd actually want a warm led flashlight, but a neutral white bead blasted titanium S2r would be freakin sweet. Gonna end this rant soon, but one last thing I will say is that the copper versions have the best feel to me, but dang that reactive metal really smells when you sweat on it. With gloves that reaction doesn't happen! I found out it's not actually the metal you're smelling, but volatile bio-compounds produced from us!

How many time you can get turbo Pro vs S2R II.At H2r nova max 10 times turbo and not necessarily held for 1 minute and 10-20 seconds x (10 times) and you still run out of turbo.I have to know if they do the same thing,it remain out of turbo fast?
@GearedTowardGear1

They’ll both run on turbo until the thermal regulation bumps them down. Once the light cools down enough you can bump right back up to turbo. You can do this as many times as you want until the battery goes dead.

The little baby S1R Baton II has got more people hooked on Olights than any other one yet. There are tons of people on the FB group who will attest to this. It's fantastic at 1000 lumens. Most of my hunting buddies all have one and mine is in my pocket every day I leave the house for the past 3 years.

Good in-depth review. I would like all reviewers to mention the Candela power on these torches. Everyone is so focused on the lumens but not paying as much attention to the beam intensity (candela). The S2R II has almost half the lumens of the Baton Pro but still throws light further out because of this. The Warrior X has a 300, 600 and short 2000 lumens but even the 300 would outshine both these lights at full power because of the 74,000 Candelas.

The Baton pro is definitely a more floody light whereas the S2R Baton II has a more focused beam pattern. Thanks for the side by side. I carry an S2R Baton II daily and I purchased a Baton Pro but I have yet to remove it from the box and after considering your points I’m thinking about selling it and sticking with my trusty S2R Baton II.

Thanks so luck for watching, Joshua! You’re absolutely right about the Pro being a flood pattern compared to the S2R being more of a combo beam. Some people love a flood pattern, and it functions well in thsy capacity I think. My preference is for the combo beam which is why I prefer the S2R, and although it’s not quite as bright I don’t mind the trade off for a bit more runtime. You can’t go wrong with the S2R that’s for sure, but the Pro isn’t bad either, just not the major upgrade I hoped it would be. Thanks again for watching - all the best!

I have both lights and I like the baton pro better, I do think both are great lights, according to the 4-1 ratio the baton pro is 25% brighter than the s2r. I carry a pro everyday for work and I haven’t ran out of power when I needed it on my carry light. I also think the beam pattern on the pro is better for up close jobs. Just my opinion

I watched this video before When it was first released. I liked the information then and I like it now as I just finished watching again, however, I do have both the Baton Pro and the S2RII. I like both lights, but the Baton Pro is my EDC, I also carry the S1R at the same time. Unless I’m going on safari and will be away from a simple charging method, the run time in the Baton Pro is of little consequence. I use three if not five Olight flashlights every day and night. Watching KZbin videos I run my lights, I try to get the charge down enough to charge the lights back to maximum charge. Ironically the S2R is on the safe and is not in my EDC rotation. The charges have Lasted long and exceed my expectations. By no means is this putting your observations down. You brought up some great facts. The circumstances I have lead me to use the Baton Pro. Keep up the great videos.

I have to disagree on many points. The light was meant to be a short range wide beam light, a flooder. Not at all a thrower. Just a different purpose. And your dinging it for it's lack of throw. Look at the spill brightness and width or the width of the hot spot. That's what it was designed for and where it excels. The S2R Baton 2 was meant to have a general purpose beam. Not a flooder or thrower. Most flashaholics have multiple lights...some for throw...and some for flood. Some in between like the S2R. Some for the tint (color) of the beam. Many lights (most) offer a 1/2 lumen moonlight level. It's nice to see some offering a higher 5 lumen moonlight level. Myself, I have MANY with the 1/2~1 lumen level...don't need another one. For folks who only want one light the S2R might be the better choice with it's general purpose beam. For those who are into flashlights and have many...the Baton Pro is a great choice for a short range wide beam light.
@GearedTowardGear1
@GearedTowardGear1 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kenneth, thanks so much for watching. I think your points and preferences are totally valid. For an EDC light I find the S2R, and really most Olights, to have a good amount of spill, so the extra flood on the Pro doesn’t provide much extra draw for me.

I have the S2r(but not the baton II) and the baton pro in blue. The older s2r is io50 lumen. I will agree with you that the baton2 is about the same as the older s2r, partly because the light pattern is wider and not as concentrated in one area. I will also agree that firefly mode is too bright on the pro at 5 lumen and the s2r is at .5 lumen. have to admit, though, that the blue is really pretty which is one reason I bought it. I've carried the s2r for several years and will now use the light that matches my outfit best. (LOL)

Absolutely agree with you, I made the same decision with the Olight Seeker 2 over the Olight Seeker 2 PRO. Just 200 lumen difference on turbo but still the non pro version (3000 instead of 3200) can go on turbo for 1,5 times as long than the pro, same story with the rest of the settings, medium (same brightness on the pro and non pro version 300 lumen) 3,5 hours longer runtime on the much cheaper non pro version. For low and moonlight the difference is 20hours and 3 days. So I totally agree with you, rather go for the cheaper with a bit less lumens and longer runtime on high medium low moonlight settings. Thank you for a great review

What’s up Romeo, great question man, I got you covered. You’ve got 2 options. Either option will work well, and they’ll both cost you around $20..... 1. Buy USB rechargeable 14500 batteries like these from Fenix. You plug the USB cable directly into the battery to charge them. These are good because you don’t have to buy a seperate battery charger, but they’re a little more expensive. Fenix ARB-L14-1600U 1.5V USB Rechargeable 1600mAH AA Batteries (2 Pack) with LumenTac Charging Cable www.amazon.com/dp/B07PVKVY1R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vx-ODb01S1YC9 2. But EBL 14500 batteries on eBay. I’ve had really good luck with them. You can get a 4-pack of batteries for $10 with free shipping. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273404482680 If you get the EBL batteries you’ll need a way to charge them. If you already have a charger then you’re good to go. If not I’d recommend this one because it works well, it can charge several different battery sizes, and only costs about $11: EBL Smart Rapid Battery Charger for Rechargeable 3.7V Li-ion LiFePO4 IMR Batteries 26650 21700 18650 17670 17500 14500 16340(RCR123), Ni-MH/Ni-Cd AA AAA C Batteries (Batteries Not Included) www.amazon.com/dp/B01D9TUL8Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_YB-ODbFMN8E1V

Thank you for your video. As some others, I actually prefer the Baton Pro due to the wider beam pattern. I prefer to light up an area vs a spot. This of course spreads light energy over a wider area contributing to the decreased apparent brightness even though there are more lumens from the Pro. Just a technical note, the apparent difference in brightness is real (not perceived) and due to the logarithmic response of our retina. This is why we can see a firefly in darkness and other things in bright sunlight. Thank you for the tip on the clip but when I look at the S1 mini Clip on the Olight site it looks different from the one in your video. The one you show looks much more rugged than the replacement clip they show. Perhaps they changed their design which is a unfortunate. Please keep good quality reviews coming.

For spotlight maybe S2r is better but for brightness this beats s2r clearly in real world. You missed the candela! Both have the same candela even so the Pro (even 150 less) has almost 850 lumen more. That tells you that the pro is more a flood light than the regular baton. It spreads it light more. So its harder to compare. If the 2000l came out of the same reflector and lense you would see more difference.

Interesting. I was just thinking of the pro, to replace my S2R II in my get home bag. But it’s a second light, to the rather floody headlight I also have, so the slightly higher throw and tighter spot on the S2R it’s probably preferable in my overall kit. I just noticed one thing about the clip. It’s one of those double back clips, allowing you to have it on your hat brim pointing forwards. However, since it’s mounted at the lens-end and not the bottom-end, a normal clip would allow this! Only a base-mounted Clip needs to double-back to allow this function.

I had been considering getting the Pro as I was under the impression it was an upgrade but after watching this I agree with you that it's actually a downgrade in every aspect. Also, with respect to your observation about perceived brightness when you double the lumen output, you're correct. It's due to the inverse square law of radiation. If you google that, it will explain why this is the case. It also applies to heat and sound.

Your comment that 2000 Lumens on the Baton Pro lasts only 60 seconds One time until recharge is absolutly the one that lets me stick to the s2r II :-) Fine Review! Kind regards from Germany

The disappearance of a sublumen moonlight mode is definitely a light killer for me. I thought the m2r pro was going to be my next light but even that was a fairly lackluster upgrade. I don't really get what they were thinking. Glad they attached the two halves of the i1r eos though. That was always a serious flaw to me.

Right on, Michael. Thanks so much for watching man. I 100% agree with you on the M2R Pro and the i1r.

2000 lumens compared to 1150 lumens seems a lot better. I've got both on order (Christmas sale) so we will see. I got the S2R for free and the Baton Pro bundled with an i3UV for $66. I have heard the pocket clip is weak. Thanks for the review! Edit: After getting both and trying them out for a few weeks, I agree that the S2R II is better. 1. The S2R's .5 lm moonlight mode is much better for moving around the house late at night without waking family. The Pro's 5 lm is just too bright for this, IMO. 2. The Pro really is not that much brighter, though it is noticeable. 1150 to 2000 should be a lot more "wow" factor. 3. The Pro's flood pattern is wide and may not be the best tactical choice unless you are walking around in a large field outside and need the floodlight type of pattern. The S2R is more of a "spotlight" pattern and will require a lot more panning back and forth to cover a large area. I prefer the Pro when out walking the dogs since it covers the sidewalk and street well without having to pan/scan back and forth. 4. Love the Desert Tan color of the Pro. I wish the S2R II was available in Desert Tan. 5. The Pro is not that much longer, but I do like the S2R for every day carry (EDC). I find it really amazing that the S2R fits in my pocket much better than the Pro, even though the Pro is only slightly longer. So in summary, I agree with you and would recommend the S2R over the Pro.

Thanks for the video ut really helped me decide between both of them and I went for the S2R baton 2 in green ,its awesome but my favorite EDC flashlight is the M2r pro 1800 lumens 🤙

Wish I had seen this before getting the Pro. Agree completely. Will likely offload my Baton Pro Ti.

Hey Chris, thanks so much for watching! I will say this, the Ti version looks stellar. And in fairness, the Pro does what it was designed to do very well in terms of providing a nice even flood pattern. I personally prefer to have a bit of a hotspot, but that’s just me. And yes the runtimes aren’t as good, but for around the house I think it could still be a good light. I have not carried the Pro at all, but I’ve kept it in my home office and have used it around the house a number of times. Maybe hang onto it for a bit and see how you like it. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to watch, I really do appreciate it. All the best!

@@GearedTowardGear1 I might keep it, but you got me thinking and now I'm ready to head into the next price tier. If only I could get a light that was the lovechild of HDS and Elzetta... Still love rocking my S1R II though. Probably my favorite light right now due to its huge feature set and small size.

Some very good points. Lumens sell, but as you've said, percieved brightness is a diminishing returns deal, and requires much more from the battery source at the cost of runtimes. Much better off with the S2R

Hey Matthew, thanks so much for watching. I know people’s time is valuable so thank you. I’ll have a review of the new M2R Pro Warrior coming soon. That’s an example of a really good and true upgrade with them fundamentally changing the light by using a more powerful battery where you get both brighter AND more runtime. Stay tuned for that review. All the best!

I have probably eleven or so Olights. But I didn't buy this blue Baton Pro, mostly because I had *just* bought the blue Seeker 2. Sometimes, Olight just releases stuff too fast for me. LOL. (BTW, for all the Olight haters out there, my EDC'd 1st gen S10R was carried daily from 2014 until I replaced it a couple of months ago with an S1R Baton II. The S10R had been dropped, beaten, and abused, but never failed. It now lives in the console of my car.)

Hey Michael, thanks for watching man. I used to have an S10R as well, but I gave it away - great light. I still carry my S1A a lot as well, have had that one for at least 5 years. I’m the same man, I don’t get all the limited flash sale stuff because there’s just so much of it! And I agree it comes too fast. I guess that’s called good marketing, lol. Either that or I’m just a sucker. I didn’t but y the blue Seeker 2 but wish I did, those look really nice.

This is a great video brotha, gives alot to think about I'm currently rocking the s1rii, and wanted to step up to the pro but now I'm probably gonna save myself a couple bucks and pick up the s2rii. But that bead blasted Ti version of the pro is calling out to me a little bit its a battle between form and function.

Thanks Frankie! For what it’s worth I will say this... although I didn’t specifically mention it (and should have), you may have picked up on the floodiness of the beam on the Baton Pro. And I’ve kept my Baton Pro in my office on a charging dock and use it around the house pretty regularly, I just don’t carry it. And I must say that Titanium version looks so incredibly badass! I was tempted to buy one just because it looks amazing!
