Nick, you are a genius at times. Your idea of having a USB port in the charger head solves most of your issues with this flashlight. If you can leave the dongle head attached, the charging terminals will be covered so no risk of shorting out. The magnet will also be covered, but still easily accessible.

Great review. Love your vids..One thing I might interject is that there are two types of 18650 cells--flattop and button terminal style batteries. Why there isn't a standardization could be because of manufacturing design of different lights from the various companies. Interpretation has produced great 18650 cells using Sony protective circuitry. Thanks for the great reviews. I have been looking at this light for a while.
@ertonyrn

Those batteries are both 18650 but the olight one has a protection circuit which makes slightly longer. You can use any protected 18650 and probably an unprotected button top 18650

I love Olights and the magnetic charging. But I too hate propriety cables. I would really like to see Olights keep the magnetic system, and also add a USB port to their batteries. I think this would be the best of both worlds. MCC for daily charging at home. Pull out the battery and use the USB charging port on the go, or for emergencies.

I’ve carried an S2R Baton in my pocket everyday for above reproach a year and it’s never switched itself on. For other reasons, I always leave it in Chilean mine mode anyway, so if it were to come on, it won’t blind any one and I’ve a month to spot it before the battery goes flat. You’re kind of right about the charger, but as I have a few of these, I leave one lead permanently plugged in by my house door, where there is an S1R and I just connect which ever one needs charging. They rarely need more than an hours charge, often much less. The other members of my family use the same lead.

The smaller 18650 he shows is non-protected. The 18650s they sell for flashlights are always protected, and thus longer (you can see where the protection circuit begins if you look at the outer wrapping). Most sites will state "not for flashlights" on the product page for standard, non-protected 18650 batteries. Always buy protected for flashlights, and they will fit this flashlight.

I think they need to 86 the strobe feature and make the triple click a custom mode where you can set it to whatever mode you want. Like you can hold it down to cycle through low, med, high, but then a triple click is boom...right to H, M, or L.

I love the strobe function for, believe it or not, selfdefense situations. I teach using non-lethal tools for women or anyone, that is not capable to fight of someone in a hand to hand street fight and the OLights about this size with at least 1,500 Lumens or more are ideal for temporarily blinding just about anyone to distract and buy time to get out a super strong pepper spray with the other hand, and the strobe setting can increase the usefulness of the lights for this purpose big time, like 5 times more effective. I use a 2,000 lumen Olight with a tail cap switch that is incredible in this purpose and use DPS black label for the spray and I can tell you no one stands a chance with this one, two punch when used correctly, and that's the key, just possessing is not enough, training is most important. I say all this to help you understand that the lights with a strobe function can be the most important tool and feature you can buy at any price. Guns should be a last resort, most street crimes can be solved with a bright strobe and a powerful spray. Not all of us are still young enough to fight anymore and giving up is not an option. Try using the light like this few times, get good with it and it may be your best friend some day, if shit happens, hopefully not.

The nope for me was not being able to use good ol sony vtc series 18650 flat top cells. I do like the flat top lens tho . Easier to wipe than the s2 baton. My s2 baton is going on 2.5 years of everyday use. I hope they fix the nit pick things by the next version.

Some OLights are easy to turn on in the pocket, not this one, but some bigger and brighter and for those I just twist the tail cap a quarter turn as a safety so they can't turn on by accident, works great. Guess I don't get the complaints on the charger. It's dirt cheap and the battery lasts forever. Absolutely love how you can basically toss the charger at the light and it sticks 100 percent, no plugging in. And with the battery life, why would you ever need to swap batteries unless it goes bad? 13 hours of run...but who is running their light all the time? Even a night shift guard wouldn't be doing that. I charge once a week, working in a factory doing maintenance and even weekly charging isn't really required, just want my turbo mode available.

I have to say, having the original S2R and the Pro...the Pro is nice but I honestly don't feel it is a huge step up in any way. It is to my eye only marginally brighter except in a small totally dark room, then you see the difference. Outside at night, not so much. It is longer and bigger around than the original mean more taken space in the pocket. It is (the pro) serving me well during my daily tasks where I need a light, but I'd probably steer and have steered friends to the S2R. Also, it gets HOT on turbo, as excepted but bear that in mind. Anyway, thx for the review, Nick.

I got a led Lenser Mt 10 flashlight. And to get into lockout mode you need to hold down the switch for I believe 19 freaking seconds. I mean seriously 🙄. But besides that, I'm happy with it so far. I've gone for that one over the olight exactly because that magnetic charge thing. I do not like that at all. I got the olight i3t and i3e and I'm happy with those. The i3t seems to be the perfect single AAA battery flashlight. But I don't think that I ever feel the need for magnetic charging. I like to put the batteries in a external charger. For me that's still the best charging option and with a single AAA battery flashlight it's really not that big of a deal to carry a spare battery all the time . But long story short, if you're a regular person, not a police officer or a ambulance guy or search and rescue, the olight i3t is most likely everything you'll ever need. Sorry for the long text that has almost nothing to do with you're video 😆🤷‍♂️

In all the ranting about proprietary crap, I heard no mention of the fact that the battery is proprietary: there's an extra contact ring on the positive end that's used for charging. While you can RUN the light on any button-top 18650 that's long enough, you can only CHARGE Olight's special battery inside it. As for onboard charging, I have exactly the opposite opinion. I never use it. I'd always rather swap in a fully charged spare so my light is ready to go. The drained battery can charge on its own time and I don't have to wait.

Eh, you need a cord on anything that needs a recharge...having it disconnect would just cause people to lose it. What I do like about olight is you only need ONE magnetic charger for all their rechargeable lights over the years. Thing that SUCKS with micro USB rechargeable is the rubber cover. Around 300 lumen for 8 hours is probably wishful thinking. But I will continue to wish. I have tons of olights and they all work with great build quality. The turbo mode on most creates a Firestarter level of heat and eats the battery. My frustration with some is the big gap between normal modes and turbo. Hence my wish for no turbo and a normal high of 300. Give me decent size, two modes of 100 and 300, and good battery life. Tired of low and flame throw high

Another freakin' great review thanks! Would observe that the clip does NOT hold on a cap! The light is too heavy and easily falls off, which leads to the next "ugly" - the aluminum case scratches and then shows scratches really easily. The clip is removable, but once sprung, does not hold on to the light very securely. A different material around both ends of the light, that would not dent or scratch if dropped would make this a much more durable light. The SR1 is almost as bright and about 1/2 the length and less than 1/2 the weight. Other colors are available in limit release and can be purchased - if you are fast enough when they first go on sale - for 40% less, which is a good value.
