Testing a 4HP, 4 Stroke, Jet Pump Outboard Motor

I got this cheap 4HP, 4 stroke, jet pump outboard motor from Amazon.
There is hardly any information on these, so I thought I would give it a try.
It works OK, however, oil had leaked inside the box during postage.
No damage was done, I cleaned it up and it started fine.
The engine is a Hangkai model. It wasn't as noisy as I was expecting it to be. I understand that the 4 strokes are quieter.
It doesn't run so well at full throttle. This maybe something that I can improve if I can adjust timing. I don't know how to yet. But then that would probably affect ability to start it.
So after filling the brand new engine with 95 benzine, about 300ml of 10w40 oil, pumped the primer a few times so that I could see the fuel in the pipe reach the carburettor, it started after 4 pulls with choke on. Then later, a warm start with choke off, started first pull only.

WOW Thank you , you really went right at it taking it apart and testing, thank you. WASnt sure on the Reverse still I would have it next to a 15hp Evinrude to replace the trolling motor and HEavy Batteries on a 12' in fresh water, I can rebuikd engines, this is simple and light , I could save around 160lbs in battery weight for the 55lbs trolling motor . Good Job!

I don't leave gas in the tank overnight. The cable got greased pronto. I use 20W50 oil. If you remove, file, and shim the flywheel notch, the motor can run slow under power without overheating. You then change the centrifugal springs for light ones, and you can troll as well as blast. If you must have high speed, take the steel strainer out.

From what I know about jet drives, the outlet needs to be mostly out of water, when it is at full speed.

If it's like their other 4hp outboards, it has the performance of a Honda 2hp outboard.

I get 3.5 knots, no wind and tide. Calculating HP depends on which internet calculator you use. I get between 2 and 4. Engine is 55CC. Search for "convert CC to HP". No one can agree proper formula so Hangkai used the largest estimate I suspect.

Surprisingly, I cannot find any USA retailers for this. Closest I could find is on eBay. It's 2.5HP versus my 4HP. And also 2 stroke. www.ebay.com/itm/256115720115

I hear you. I don't believe it either, but I don't know how to test horsepower rating really. It still goes forwards though, as long as i'm not fighting a 3.5 knot current.

The propeller version of this is kinda better and has better performance
