When Paul Rodgers was interviewed one time, he was asked an interesting question. Given that he'd worked with so many great guitarists, (Paul Kossoff, Mick Ralphs, Jimmy Page...) who did he think was the best ? He said Paul Kossoff, hands down.

Paul Gilbert has become an absolute favorite of mine over the last decade. When he picks up a guitar he’s like a kid with a new toy. So much joy and emotion come from him and it gets me excited for what he plays. He has such passion for what he does.

Yes, Rik Emmett is definitely one of the most underrated guitarist out there. Solo from "Rock and Roll Machine,"(1977) was way ahead of its time. Van Halen I,(1978). Plus his versatility as an accomplished acoustic guitarist catapults him above the rest. ex. "Blinding Light Show/ Moonchild," "Midsummer's Daydream."

I love Angus, too! But I understand Pete didn't put him on his list because he mostly had his eye on if the guitarist is a great composer also. So that would even more be Malcolm instead. But Pete doesn't see AC/DC as a very much important band for the evolution of music, as I understand... And I see most guitarists here stand alone in their band without a second player doing the rhythm only. Perhaps Pete should do also a video about the greatest guitar playing pairs sometimes!

Some my faves on there were Bonamassa, Lukather, Morse, Holdsworth, Lifeson, and Buck Dharma. Love BOC! I always thought Gary Richrath from REO was underrated. Not a huge REO fan, but loved his playing-especially on earlier stuff.

That was a great list! Of course, any best guitarist list is totally subjective and varies according to personal taste. For me, everyone who knows me knows that my favorite guitarist is Jerry Garcia, hands down. But, as a guitarist, over the past few years there are 3 players who have had my attention and totally influenced my approach to the instrument: Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, and Peter Green. They continue to expand my horizons exponentially, showing me possiblities I hadn't even imagined.

11:25 - Thanks for mentioning Warren and Gov't Mule. DIG IT! My own personal shoutout for Ty Tabor of King's X. Totally unique sound, excellent musicianship, 3-part vocal harmonies, and a live show that remains in my own top 3. I've seen a shitload of shitty concerts delivered by bands that were way more successful (and NOT deserving it). Not sure why King's X didn't go huge? No matter-I own everything they've released.

My personal favourite guitarist for the last 15 years or so is Vlatko Stefanovski who's played for Leb i Sol, Balkan Horses Band, VS Trio, as well as several collaborations with Miroslav Tadić, who is also an excellent guitarist!!! :-D

Like you I started listening to guitarists about 55 years ago and been playing for 50 of those. To bad you missed out on Johnny Winter. By far the greatest all around guitarist I ever heard and seen.
