One of the first bands to release there entire catalog in one Box Set. "Citizen Steely Dan" - in 1993 had every album on 4 CDs Reasonably Priced & Worth Buying...

I got that too, it introduced me to the Dan universe. I still think it sounds pretty good although almost too bright. What bothers me a bit about that box set is that, given the 4-disc format, some of the albums are spread over two CDs. So by now I have most of their first seven albums on vinyl too. And the Record Store Day reissues of Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go are already pre-ordered!

Hey Pete just want to say thanks for the work you put into this channel and to all your regular guess host too. SoT is the best channel I've found that covers all the styles of music that I'm passionate about. I've got a circle of friends in our late 30's to late 50's, all of whom are music nuts from a early age, that are musicians or have been involved in the music business in some way as record store managers and such and we all agree SoT is the best. So from all of us again thank you! 🤘😎🍺

One of the greatest bands ever! A great discussion on Steely Dan. Thanks guys!! I once attended a Q & A with Steely Dan producer Gary Katz and he said that Donald Fagen just wants a straight-frills drum track, which may account for a kind of sameness within the later material. I was also thinking that perhaps the kind of budgets that Steely Dan were able to work with back in the Seventies was no longer the case later on, accounting for Walter and Donald playing on their albums more frequently instead of the expensive roster of ace musicians they could use before. A shame about the rythum tracks though, as, later on, a certain level of dynamics are lost as a result, making things sound a little too flat, I think. It used to be fun also trying to pick out the style of the drummer, for example. Something of a virtually lost activity these days.

Great show guys, as always. 70s - Aja 80s - Gaucho 90s - Alive in America 00s - Two Against Nature Not sure if you consider Alive in America (95) because it's a live album but don't sleep on that. The musicianship is unparalleled and for a live album, the production is quite good. Saw that tour and could not believe how tight the band was live. AMAZING!

Technically, I believe "Two Against Nature" came out in the year 2000. If that's the case I'd throw in Walter Becker's album "11 Tracks of Whack" for the 1990s. Not a great album, but since Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" was included in the 1980s seems only fair Walter could have an album included too. SD is one of those groups were I find something new every time I listen to an album. Pete and Sean, really enjoyed your thoughts on the albums.

70s: The Royal Scam. I adore Aja and Countdown to Ectasy is great but Scam is so great. Love Caves of Altamira, Green Earrings and Kid Charlamagne. 80s: Would pick Gaucho a little over Nightfly. 00s: Two Against Nature. I am 36 and discovered Steely Dan in a Barnes and Noble scanning the Aja album and randomly selected Deacon Blues and bought it immediately. Thanks Pete!

'The Royal Scam' is my all time favourite Dan album for similar reasons as cited by Sean and Pete - a little more "meat left on the bone" from a production side, and it clearly stands out on the drumming front in particular. Also, I would highly recommend checking out Sean's channel , and his episode on Steely Dan with keyboardist Bill Graham where they break down some of the amazing chordal structures of various Dan songs - very interesting and informative .

Thanks to Sean and Pete taking on the Decades album for Steely Dan. I still remember my brother bringing home the first two albums, telling me once again "You've got to come listen to this", and cranking up the folks' stereo system. He kept talking about the quality of the production, I kept hearing the musicianship. My choices would be: 70s - Pretzel Logic [yes, Aja and The Royal Scam are great] but the songs of this album still sound brand new to me after all these years. 80s - Agree with Sean and taking the choice of The Nightfly, the Donald Fagen record that always sounded like a Steely Dan album to me. Prefer it just a miniscule above Gaucho. Double Naughts - Two Against Nature But you could put on all the 70s albume and play them back to back and would love just to do that. Thanks again, Sean and Pete, for another fun entry in the Through The Decades series.

Kamakiriad is the "preview" of things to come with the 2000's records. "The Dunes" is one of my favorite Donald Fagen solo tracks....but I love the 1990's-2000's stuff. Gaucho might be my favorite Steely Dan album of all time....but that changes with the wind.

My favorite album(?) is "Citizen Steely Dan: 1972-1980." This is a great boxed set of high-quality audio sound with all the albums from Can't Buy A Thrill to Gaucho (7 albums), and by selecting this I don't have to choose one album over the other. If you're just getting into SD, I'd recommend picking up this set... you won't regret it.

70's : The Royal Scam (perfect balance between the rock/pop and the jazz Steely Dan) 80's : Gaucho (aural perfection, Glamour Profession and Third World Man are in my top 5 SD songs, it's a pity it wasn't a double album as planned). Not so keen on the later stuff, a bit sterile in my opinion and not so outstanding among other acts. I once read an on point description of Fagen's voice as that's how the snake in the garden of Eden would've sounded, seducing and a bit dangerous. In the post Gaucho stuff I miss those qualities in his voice most of the time. Great to see Century's End & FM mentioned btw!

Even though this band was the biggest stretch to fit into this concept, it turned out to be my favorite of the series so far. Totally agree with the observations on the relative "sameness" and lack of genius instantaneous hooks on the later albums, even though they're objectively good records. Even The Nightfly has that feeling of the first run of albums where the musical ideas just feel so perfect and effortless. After that one, things definitely changed, although IMO Fagan's Sunken Condos record from 2012 is another standout of his solo work.

@@neuropete1 - Like I said to me the Greatest Hits was all I need from Steely Dan. And to me, Greatest Hits & Gold still had fillers. Except for *Do It Again* (long version), *Rikki, FM* & *Aja* (Deacon Blues, Aja, Peg). How much I tried, just couldn't get into Steely Dan. They're one of those bands that never clicked with me. And I brought the Steely Dan box set (Reeling in the Years) and it just sits and collects dust. Except for the songs listed. I rather listen to the Village People before Steely Dan. Oh. I think what hurts Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go is that the strongest material is in the back 70% of the album (unlike Pretzel Logic, where side two is kinda weak except for the title track). On Two Against Nature Janie Runaway, Almost Gothic, Jack of Speed, Negative Girl, West of Hollywood are the strongest tracks. On Everything Must Go Godwhacker, GreenBook (Aja level recording IMO), Pixeleen, Lunch with Gina, and the Title Track are by far the best songs. Seriously, play Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go tracks in REVERSE ORDER and both albums are Great!

I'm the opposite of what you were talking about. I AVOID hits like the plague. I'm a deep cuts ONLY guy. FM radio has destroyed my once-favorite songs by playing them to death. The only reason I would still listen to AOR stations until 91-ish, was the occasional song like " all the way from Memphis", " conquistador", " 2112", " never been any reason", "night flight", "squonk", etc. Once they parted ways with those by 93, that left just overplayed hits and brand new music, most of which wasn't good. Nowadays, they play hits only with no new music and I can't see anyone transitioning from casual music fan to " music nut" like myself. Why on earth they re not playing " the Mission" by Styx or " absence of presence" by Kansas, instead of the same tired crap, beyond me. They didn't even touch Sunken Condos. They wonder why radio stations are computer-run and fading. Putting on my local rock station actually angers me at this point lol

Steely Dan was unlike anything else, before or since. I love other acts and artists for many reasons, but if I could only listen to one act's catalog for the rest of my life, it would be Steely Dan. '70s - pick one. Seriously. There are no wrong answers here. On any given day, I could name The Royal Scam, Aja, or Pretzel Logic. And if you came back with Katy Lied, Countdown to Ecstasy, or Can't Buy a Thrill, I would respect your choice 100%. We'd both be right. '80s - Gaucho, by default. Still a great album, if not quite as consistent as the two which most immediately preceded it. Revival period - Two Against Nature. The final SD disc, Everything Must Go, is kind of a throwaway, although a Steely Dan throwaway is better than anything most artists will create in a lifetime.

I think there are two reasons why their final two albums are less celebrated than their classic output. First, the absence of burning guitar solos. Second, the character of Fagen's voice changed. The songwriting remained excellent. But without the solos and Fagen's classic snarky voice it wasn't quite the same.

Steely Dan is my favourite group - although that word doesn't exactly fit well in their case - but I am still critical of some of their latter-day output. '70s - 'The Royal Scam' (That's my choice today but tomorrow it could be 'Pretzel Logic') '80s - 'The Nightfly' (A wonderful record that is one of the few concept albums that actually works) '00s - 'Two Against Nature' (Not a great album but it has its moments in 'Cousin Dupree' and 'Jack of Speed') I'm not a big fan of Fagen's solo work post-'The Nightfly' or the two Steely Dan albums after their reformation. My big problem is with the sound, which is so technical, dry and airless. It's like the music has never seen the light of day. The striving for perfection led to a very cold sound with performances that were utterly lacking in feel.

Sean nailed it for me with his comment on the sterility of later Dan recordings. After the first few albums there was no ambient sound to the production. I could never get into The Nightfly for that reason. I played it to death for days but although the songs were great I just couldn't get anything out of it. Fagen should've recorded it like it was a late night show on some '50s/60s radio station. Too sterile and drained of all studio 'feel' in the control room.

It’s an early digital recording, that’s why it doesn’t sound that good, to put it mildly. Digital recordings got better sometime in the 90s, but you simply can’t beat analog recordings.

How about having the cream of the crop studio drummers at your disposal...sampling them & then quantizing their tracks into "perfection" (i.e. no soul, no human feel). Music on the grid 101. Thank you, no.

The rock world is filled with so many great songs. Why is that so few, overall, get any air-play? If someone wants to play a less famous track by Steely Dan, Rush, Aerosmith, Genesis or Soundgarden. Why can't they? I don't like that good songs get played to death and dislike even more that there are so many great songs that many miss out on!

1. Katy Lied (only noise reduction fiasco prevents KL from being the greatest album of all time) 2. Aja 3. Royal Scam 4. Gaucho (massively underrated - sick chord progressions) Pinnacle. Then everything else is nearly even 5. Everything Must Go (best played in reverse order, way underrated) 6. Countdown to Ecstasy: Your Gold Teeth I, Boston Rag have a bit of a prog element 7. Two Against Nature: Strongest from Janie Runaway - West of Hollywood 8. Can't Buy a Thrill 9. Pretzel Logic - has a few throwaways Solo records: 1. The Nightfly ( would rate The Nightfly as between Katy Lied and Aja in that upper pinnacle) 2. Circus $ 3. Morph the Cat 4. Sunken Condos 5. Kamakiriad 6. 11 Tracks of Whack
