Budgie - Bandolier, the fifth album by the Welsh rock band, and the first with drummer Steve Williams. Although it still rocks pretty hard, it's less of a grinding heavy metal album than its predecessors. Also has a slight funky feel to some tracks, particularly the excellent Who Do You Want For Your Love? The album closes with the classic Napoleon Bona-Parts One and Two, which starts as a gentle ballad, and then turns into a thunderous rocker, with a great chugging riff from Tony Bourge.

Day 18: "Nothin' Fancy" was released by Lynyrd Skynyrd on the MCA Records label in March of '75. This album was kicked off in 17 days in between tours that set off a chain reaction of dissatisfaction within the band that turned the hands of fate mirrored by the inevitable. "Saturday Night Special" was the lonely single and rather dark and depressing in its message. The incessant touring may or may not played a role in the crash over Mississippi in Oct. of '77. But a few members wound up leaving after this tour, thereby missing that flight.

Thanks again, Pete. Today I'm going for the self-titled debut from Little River Band. They are (or at least started out as) an Australian band, but they always sounded more American to my ears, which I guess is why they became popular in the US and eventually recruited US members. Good solid, catchy rock music, with some really good songwriting and great vocal harmonies. Start of a string of excellent releases. 1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts 3. Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 4. Camel - The Snow Goose 5. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 6. Clannad - Clannad 2 7. The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 8. Eagles - One of These Nights 9. Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music 10. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 11. Focus - Mother Focus 12. Gryphon - Raindance 13. Justin Hayward and John Lodge - Blue Jays 14. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 15. Journey - Journey 16. Kansas - Song for America / Masque 17. Kayak - Royal Bed Bouncer 18. Little River Band - Little River Band

Day 18 / Pick #14 = PINK FLOYD - Wish You Were Here. A substantial chunk of this album is an ode to departed member Barrett, while the remainder is an acerbic indictment of the corporate music industry. A great mix of balladry, atmospherics and rock, as well as some funky grooves on the final track. Favourites: Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part 6-9, and Welcome To The Machine.

Pick #14: Fleetwood Mac's Self Titled '75. In spite of Rumours arguably being the best album in this era of the band for many and I mostly agree, I've gotten to the point in life where I've heard it so many times that I kind of prefer self titled and the 80s albums. Also, in spite of my love for many of Fleetwood Mac's songs, they can have slight peaks and valleys for me. I never get tired of hearing the Christine McVie led tracks and usually quite enjoy Lindsey Buckingham's songs, but Stevie Nicks I only can take in small doses and sometimes I find her a little bit grating, which feels wrong to say but she's my least favorite of the three. Say You Love Me is probably my favorite track on this album #31: Bad Company's Straight Shooter #30: Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte #29: Kiss Alive #28: ZZ Top's Fandango! #27: Scorpions' Trance #26: Hawkwind's Warrior on the Edge of Time #25: Nazareth's Hair of the Dog #24: Eloy's Power and the Passion #23: Renaissance's Scheherazade and Other Stories #22: Doobie Brothers' Stampede #21: Jethro Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery #20: Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow #19: Thin Lizzy's Fighting #18: Gentle Giant's Free Hand #17: Supertramp's Crisis? What Crisis? #16: Electric Light Orchestra's Face the Music #15: Grateful Dead's Blues For Allah #14: Fleetwood Mac's Self Titled 1975

With you 100% when saying the C. McVie and Buckingham tracks are always enjoyable. Granted Nicks has had some real winners, but if I never hear Landslide again, it won't be too soon. To me, her voice was the proverbial fingernails on a chalkboard, and then there was Christine and Lindsey to provide the antidote.

Day 18 A Night At the Opera - Queen EMI records. What an opener with Death On Two Legs! Every insult you could think of levelled towards ex manager in this great track. Freddie's aggressive vocal work really hits home here. Things lighten up further into the album though with You're My Best Friend, Love Of My Life and the quirky Seaside Rendezvous. Bohemian Rhapsody appears on side two, an epic track that is perhaps the first song you think of when this great band is mentioned. Overall a wonderful record from one of the best bands ever.

Day18-Rainbow-Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow. After Blackmore left Deep Purple and Dio brought his Elf band along to form Rainbow. A great hard rock album, not as good as Dio’s other 2 Rainbow albums, but still a good album. A great opening track Man on a Silver Mountain is a classic opener to an album. Catch the Rainbow and The Temple of the King are also great songs. Dio is my favorite vocalist of all time, and Blackmore my favorite guitarist. Anything they do together sounds awesome. That is my number 18 pick.

Hi everyone, just a fairly quick one today as I'm out and about for a fair bit of the day, so the usual apologies for late replies! My pick today sees me staying in the UK and is the 8th studio album by a veritable British institution whose career ran for 60 years plus and saw then have more chart success than any other band with 60 UK hit singles over the years, although, perhaps surprisingly, only one got to #1, and it was taken from this very album, which also topped the album chart over here. STATUS QUO "On The Level" That single was, of course, the boogietastic "Down Down", and other highlights include Little Lady, Most Of The Time, Nightride and a fun run through of Chuck Berry's Bye Bye Johnny. Quo's 70s output is pretty much essential listening if you've got a rockin' bone in your body. Boogie on down!

Well I'm going to get Day 18 out of the way now Roxy music siren Bryan ferry and the boys continuing on. Of course the album cover featuring former Texas model Jerry Hall and a mermaid uniform best known as Mick Jagger's girlfriend for many years. This of course is what put them into the mainstream for many people with the only really hit that they had for people that don't know much about the band until Avalon came was love is the drug. Of course when FM radio plays at they give you the whole high heels clapping in the car starting and kicking it in. This just like their two previous albums are just absolutely awesome All the hits on here it's definitely killer with no filler Fantastic horn work great guitar work from Phil Everything start to finish always listen to this whole album So many favorites Sentimental fool, she sells, both ends burning, just another high.

Happy weekend everyone. CHILLIWACK -- "ROCKERBOX." Fifth LP by the Canadian quartet and the only Chilliwack album not released on CD (my vinyl is well worn). Co-produced by Craig Leon (Ramones, Bangles, Talking Heads, Blondie, etc.), it's one of their hardest rocking albums with plenty of tasty Henderson / Froese licks and riffs. Includes I Know You Know, Magnolia, Train's A-Comin' Back and the seven minute epic Marianne. They played an awesome heavy set at Titan Stadium, summer 1977 opening for J. Geils Band, Muddy Waters and Poco.

My choice today is a southern rock classic already picked here by a number of SOT viewers previously, NUTHIN' FANCY by LYNYRD SKYNYRD. The third album by arguably the definitive southern rock band and the first to feature Artimus Pyle. Whilst I don't think this is quite as strong as the two that preceded it, it is still a fine collection of songs that make the most of all that formidable guitar firepower. Ronnie is also becoming an ever better vocalist, using his voice in a much more nuanced and subtle way. The songs run the full gamut of Skynyrd's repertoire. Of course there's the muscular hard rockers that make up a large part of the album such as Saturday Night Special, one of Skynyrd's heaviest tracks and one of my favourites, it is the best known song here. There's the Free like strut and swagger of On The Hunt. I'm A Country Boy and Whiskey Rock A Roller also rock hard. Railroad Song is a breezy bouncy boogie, whilst Cheatin' Woman is a soulful rock ballad that again echoes the ghost of Free. Am I Losin' is country rock hybrid par.excellence whilst Made In The Shade has that whimsical country blues sound. An album that firmly retained Skynyrd's appeal.

Day 18. A (mainly) instrumental prog album. Music Inspired By The Snow Goose by Camel. That first bit had to be added after Paul Gallico, the author of the original novella objected (and threatened legal action) to the band using the title The Snow Goose. Why he objected? Maybe he just wasn't a prog fan. I would've been proud to have inspired such a well written, beautifully played record. 43 minutes of exquisite guitar from the vastly under rated Andy Latimer, wonderful keyboards from Pete Bardens and a sympathetic rhythm section of Andy Ward on drums and Doug Ferguson on bass and 'duffle coat' - used to recreate the sound of flapping wings. No samples back in 1975. The original recording is broken down into 16 tracks, but as a concept piece, it should be listened to full. You wouldn't read the novella that inspired it and skip chapters 2, 3, 5 and 7, for example. A wonderful album that deserves the kudos it's now earning.

My Day 18 pick is an album released on September 24, 1975 and recorded in July 1975 at Toronto Sound (Toronto) and produced by the band and Terry Brown I'm talking about the third studio album by Canadian rock band Rush ,Caress of Steel.Though the band members were initially proud of their work on Caress of Steel, the album proved to be a commercial and critical nadir for Rush as the album's darker sound and fantastical compositions failed to find an audience and confused some of the band's peers, while poor sales put the band in danger of being dropped by Mercury. The mediocre reception impacted the band's gigging opportunities, leading them to dub the supporting tour the "Down The Tubes Tour". Despite being more positively viewed by the band's fans in retrospect, Ultimate Classic Rock noted that the album is still considered "the black sheep of their catalog".The album cover for Caress of Steel was intended to be printed in a silver colour to give it a "steel" appearance. A printing error resulted in giving the album cover a gold colour. This error has never been corrected on subsequent printings of the album.[15] The cover artwork for Caress of Steel was designed by Hugh Syme, the first Rush album to feature his work. Syme has designed the cover artwork for every Rush album since. On the inside gatefold of the album, just below the lyrics to "The Necromancer", the Latin phrase "Terminat hora diem; terminat auctor opus" appears, which translates (loosely) to: "[as] The hour ends the day; the author ends his work." The source of this phrase is Christopher Marlowe's play Doctor Faustus (1592).. It was recorded immediately after the band concluded touring in support of their previous album, Fly By Night, and marked a development in the group's sound, moving from the blues-based hard rock style of their debut towards progressive rock. Caress of Steel is considered Rush's first progressive rock album.[6] Songs such as "The Necromancer" furthered Rush's advancement into narrative-driven, fantasy-based compositions, while "The Fountain of Lamneth" was their first prog-rock "epic" to span an entire side of vinyl. Other tracks like "Bastille Day" and "Lakeside Park" became staples of the band's live setlists. Personnel edit Rush Geddy Lee - vocals, bass guitar Alex Lifeson - 6 and 12-string electric and acoustic guitars, classical guitar, steel guitar Neil Peart - drums, percussion, lyrics, spoken word on "The Necromancer" Technical Rush - co-producers, arrangements Terry Brown - co-producer, engineer, arrangements AGI - art direction Hugh Syme - graphics Terrance Bert - photography Gerard Gentil - photography Barry McVicker - photography Songs edit Side one edit "Bastille Day" concerns the storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution.[11] "I Think I'm Going Bald" was written in reference to Kim Mitchell, lead guitarist and vocalist for Max Webster who shared management and touring "Lakeside Park" is about the park of the same name in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Ontario, where Peart grew up and worked during the summer as a teenager.[12] "The Necromancer" is a 12-minute track in three parts. It concerns a necromancer, someone who practices necromancy, a type of divination involving the summoning of spirits of the deceased. The song was influenced by the works of author J. R. R. Tolkien; the necromancer is an alias used by the character Sauron in Tolkien's novel The Hobbit (1937). The introduction contains the lyric, "Three travelers, men of Willow Dale", a reference to the band itself, as Lifeson had formed the first incarnation of Rush in the Toronto suburb of Willowdale. The final section, "Return of the Prince", sees the return of the character By-Tor from the song "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" on Fly by Night, but in "The Necromancer", the character is a hero and not a villain.[13] "Return of the Prince" was released as a single in Canada. Side two edit "The Fountain of Lamneth" is the band's first of three side-long tracks, the others being the title track of 2112 in 1976 and "Cygnus X-1, Book II: Hemispheres" from Hemispheres in 1978. It consists of six parts and tells the story of a man in search of the Fountain of Lamneth as he chronicles the occurrences on his journey. The second part, "Didacts and Narpets", consists mostly of a drum solo. In 1991, Peart said that the shouted words heard are an argument between the central character and the Didacts and Narpets (anagrams of "addicts" and "parents", respectively). He could not remember what the words were, "but they took up opposite positions like: 'Work! Live! Earn! Give!' and like that." My choice for today is the debut album by an American band that went on to achieve huge commercial success after changing their lineup and musical style: Journey - self titled Despite the lack of sales, this album is a great showcase for their skill as musicians - in particular, Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie are both excellent on here. My favourite numbers are Of A Lifetime, Kohoutek, Topaz and Mystery Mountain. Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Another fine SoT selection. Personal pick today? The first solo album by this American singer/songwriter/musician and former Raspberry released in November on the Arista label - the eponymously debut of Eric Carmen. My anticipation of hearing the album was high as the Raspberries were a personally favorite power pop group who never maintained the continuing fame they deserved. The album charted in four markets reaching $27 in the U.S. and has been certified gold in the U.S. and Canada. The album was not as "power poppish" as the Raspberries and allows him to wander into more ballad territory which seemed to become his ultimate solo strength. The opening track Sunrise - a personal favorite - continues to show the power pop strength in his songwriting. The album has maintained a charm and it earns a spot on the list because of his piano playing and my tracking down the sheet music book - which is still somewhere in the house - and learning to play all the songs on piano. He wrote all the songs on the album with the exception of the cover of " On Broadway" but it is interesting to note how many of the songs had morphs of classical pieces including Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor in the first single "All By Myself" and Frédéric Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 3 in "Last Night." Still generally prefer his time with the Raspberries but this was a welcome release in 1975 and still gets played regularly. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your next selection.

#14 Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin’ Fancy #15 Robin Trower - For Earth Below The third album from Lynyrd Skynyrd is full of great tunes. My favorites are of course the amazing opening tracks of both sides in “Saturday Night Special” and “On the Hunt”. One is a scary tale about guns that rocks hard…the other is a Diamond gem in the British hard rock style of Free. New drummer Artemis Pyle, the only surviving member, added new power to these tunes with his twin bass drum kit. Other songs I like are “I’m a Country Boy”, “Am I Losin’” & “Whiskey Rock-A-Roller”. But Al Kooper was not as satisfied with this album in comparison to the first two. It was the first album that was not extensively rehearsed at “Hell House”. I think he felt they rushed the process just to get a record out. So for Al this was his last album as producer. Ed King, who co-wrote many songs on this album with Ronnie Van Zant, also left the band halfway through their subsequent tour. I know because in July of ‘75 I saw the band and only Collins and Rossington were manning the guitars. According to King, Ronnie and Ed’s guitar tech got drunk; and Ed’s guitar did not get tuned up right. Ronnie still blamed Ed and criticized him so much that Ed said he was leaving the band. Well that’s rock and roll for you. It’s still a fine album !! Robin Trower was getting more funky on For Earth Below…and more directly IMO quoting from Jimi Hendrix. Much of the album has a “Band of Gypsys” vibe to it. Robin also is layering guitar overdubs more than in the past too. I know many really love this album, but I thought it was not near as good as Twice Removed From Yesterday & Bridge of Sighs. That said…this is still a great record that belongs on the top 31 of ‘75. My favorite tunes are: “Shame the Devil”, “Confessin’ Midnight”(with an impressive outro guitar solo), “Althea” & “Gonna Be More Suspicious”. I have to say, however, that I feel that the title track is very slow, boring and tedious. Maybe that’s just me. And I can not like a song or two and still rate this album pretty high.

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is SCHEHERAZADE AND OTHER STORIES by RENAISSANCE. Melodic rock with an orchestra from these British proggers, featuring the crystal clear, soaring vocals of Annie Haslam. Tracks like Ocean Gypsy are as good as anything by the band, and I also love the slightly creepy A Trip To The Fair, which recalls a visit that Annie and her fella Roy Wood made to Hampstead Fair in London (been there several times myself). The 24 minute title track is just a bit too long and orchestral for my liking (works better on their Carnegie Hall live album).

@garykelly9475

Day 18 the companion piece to yesterday in those great 70's UK hard melodic rock bands that should have been bigger, if not quite to the magnitude of others from the era- not to downplay their quality and strength- as I hold UFO and today's and in just as high esteem Thin Lizzy- Fighting. I must admit I enjoy all eras of the band, and love Nightlife, even though maybe a bit more on the more melodic softer side for many. You can really hear it gel and the identity being honed for what came after. And what came after was this. This feels more consistent in tone, songwriting and material strength, as well as the forging of the balance of the instantly identifiable sound. Yes, there's a great cover version which easily trumps the original, but Suicide, Wild One, Ballad of the Hard Man, Fighting my way Back. Such a strong album deserved better artwork and marketing for sure!

18) Hank Williams Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. And Friends When I was growing up my Dad was a huge fan of the classic Country artists, such as Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, and of course, Hank Williams. Hearing all their records for as long as I could remember made the music part of my DNA. I still remember riding in my Dad's Chevy Impala with an 8-track of 24 Of Hank Williams Greatest Hits playing on the stereo. So I guess it's only fitting that my love for Country music came into its own with this record. This was also the album where Hank Williams Jr. really arrived. The record is Country Rock, which was a stepping stone from Hank's earlier pure Country sound to the Outlaw Country he was to produce later in his career. Overall, it's an excellent album, with six songs written by Hank Jr., two by Toy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band, and one from the prolific pen of Shel Silverstein. The record is enjoyable from start to finish, but the standout tracks are: "I Really Did", a great honky tonk style ballad with some fine Eagles-like harmonies. "Can't You See", the Marshall Tucker Band classic, which was covered by Waylon Jennings, and more recently The Zac Brown Band, but this is the best cover version. "Stoned At The Jukebox", this is real hardcore Country, the sound of the honky tonk. "Living Proof" is Hank Jr.'s best song about his Daddy's influence. "Brothers Of The Road" is pure Southern Rock from the pen of Hank Jr. that had great vocals and guitar picking. Hank Williams Jr. And Friends is one of the best Country albums of all time, and it marks the beginning of Hank Jr.'s classic period. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts 11) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery 12) Angel - S/T 13) Crack The Sky - S/T 14) Rush - Fly By Night 15) Grand Funk Railroad - Caught In The Act 16) KISS - Alive! 17) Ian Hunter - S/T 18) Hank Williams Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. And Friends

My pick for day 18 (in alphabetical order) goes to STEVE HACKETT, “Voyage Of The Acolyte”. This has been the first solo album of any Genesis member, at the time when Steve still was in the band. It came out in 1975, but I got it some years later (I guess, around 1979 maybe). I even didn’t get into Genesis earlier before 1976, at the time when Peter Gabriel already had left them and Phil Collins took over the lead vocals. At his solo debut album, Steve shows his amazing talents on various guitars, keyboards and other instruments, as well as a writer. Remarkable music pieces are “Ace Of Wands”, “Hands Of The Priestess” Parts 1+2, “A Tower Struck Down” and the epic “Shadow Of The Hierophant”. Along with several guest musicians, his Genesis bandmates Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins support him on bass and drums, with Phil also singing on “Star Of Sirius”. An overall strong solo debut of Steve. It’s understandable that he left the band two years later in 1977 to pursue his own career, because he felt the band did not accept much of the song material he offered to them. Today, close to 50 years after he left Genesis, Steve is still around with his own band, frequently releasing new solo albums and successfully touring with a lot of the legendary Genesis 70s material on which he has been involved, as well as with his own stuff. I’m extremely thankful to him for what he does and has done to keep the early Genesis legacy alive, I got several DVDs and BlueRays from his concerts, and I like all of them. My hope is that I might be able to be at least at one of his concerts sometime in the near future, before he retires (like all ex-Genesis members, he’s 70+ years old now). My personal albums from 1975, in alphabetical order: day 15: ABBA, s/t day 16: America, History day 17: Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band day 18: Steve Hackett, Voyage Of The Acolyte

Just in the past few years I have come to appreciate “Stargazer” for the masterpiece it is. I had a various album from the Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donnington in the U.K. I believe it was released in 1980. I think there were two songs represented from each artist that played the festival. Rainbow’s singer at the time was Graham Bonnet. His version of Stargazer is the one I grew up on. I never sought out the Dio version and if I had heard it, it was only in passing. Fast forward to 2021-2022. A friend of mine plays the Dio version for me and tells me what a masterpiece it is. He couldn’t have been more right. Now, I find myself playing it up to 10 times in a row some days. Such an incredible piece of music.

It's a solid record they put out when one delves in and hears the record. As they as some were messed up with health and drugs they managed to focus along to great the solid music on the record, The read in of Tommy Bolin composing stuff before he came in to Deep Purple and to jell with the other band members. I would see the band in February of 1976. It was good and one of the suitable better concerts to the tour still then afterwards when I seen them and shows for a month into March when they would do their last show of the tour( on 15 March 1976 at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. The break-up was finally made public in July 1976.) Bolin and the time Hughes messed up to drugs, Tommy passing away in December of 76 of heroin overdose. And as Deep Purple that time deciding to not continue. Thus to Deep Purple the history knows of what happened of later Mark lineups and some reunions to Mark 2 lineup. Tommy before in that year would release second solo album Private Eyes in 76, I had been exposed to Bolin before with ZEPHYR band and THE JAMES GANG. As he would have a background and in fusion jazz before people with Billy Cobham Spectrum and other stuff. So well talented with that lead winding playing and pedal using and effects so he was there as accomplished player for sure. On this record of DP Comin' Home 352 Lady Luck 245 Gettin' Tighter 336 Dealer 349 I Need Love 422 Drifter 401 Love Child 305 This Time Around / Owed To 'G' (Instrumental) 607 You Keep On Moving 518 --------------------------- Comin Home opening charging rocker from the get go. Then Lady Luck another rocker with that cadence. David Coverdale vocals so good. Love It. Then Gettin Tighter with Glenn Hughes vocals. Great riffs from Bolin and kickin on high. Its great. Dealer is next and Coverdale story line to Bolin and Hughes with addiction with the lyrics. The rocker is so good and Bolins leads so gnarling and great that so highlight the track in the soloing. Then I Need Love and rock and spots of funky in the song Then The Drifter the lead start and Bolin taking along the song with Coverdale and the band so good. Then Love child with the vibe to touch of Zepp. And so and Jon Lords organ in snip part in song, Then This Time Around/ Owed to G. Glenn Hughes vocals with hearing of his soulfulness sounding with Lords piano and keyboards, Then Tommy with second part with Owed to G and his great guitar playing and the track. Then You Keep on Moving with joint vocals of Coverdale/Hughes and great track with Lord Bolin and Paice so fine in it. Its great closer I hive the album a 4. And always have a place for the record to this year it came out, Endures for all that still do like or love the album that in retrospect was a decent album. Give a listen and enjoy. Take care love hugs and prayers now and being there looking ahead. Thanks. 🎶🎶🎸🎸🎤🎤🎹🥁❤🤗🙏☮ PS Pete. good UFO yep and to another great album of this year too.

Hey friend, it’s another essential choice today. I agree about Landslide - Stevie’s vocals are just as amazing on there as on Rhiannon, whilst the whole album is totally brilliant.
