My note for the ones who need it and wish you be happy (disclaimer: the note are not gaurantee to be accurate) ● Horse and rider. Potentially emotion is like a horse and we let them control us. By training mindfulness we can control it. ○ By doing this you can have strong self awareness, remain calm and confident in crisis, create optimism and resilience. ● Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ fellings and motions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions. ● You can learn about exercise, but you have to do it. same to emotional intelligence ● It is trainable to let your mind be calm and clear mind on demand ● Mindfulness is paying attention in a particular way on purpose in the present moment non-judgmentally. ● Mindfulness is also like a flag pole, no matter your mind as a flag is being blown it but it stays there. ● three step of training ○ Attention training ■ Doing mindfulness, ○ Self knowledge and self mastery ■ create resolution (spatial and temporal), vividness (signal to noise) and substantially (seeing yourself objectively from a third-person perspective ■ Insula relate to three things ● awareness sensation (aware of your body) ● aware emotion ● empathy ■ If you have high resolution to your emotion, you will change from I am happy to I am experiencing happiness in my body. (from Existential to physiological) ○ Create useful mental habits ■ kindness (you want the other to be happy) ■ habit of human similarity (three points) ● this person is a human being just like me ● this person wants to be happy just like me ● this person want to free from suffer just like me ● Homework ○ Mindfulness to the breath ○ random intention of kindness. look at any human in random and just think want the person to be happy

I have been meditating for a few years now Meng, but am amazed by your book and your example. You demystify the practice. Your book is one of the best I have read in this area, if not the best. I know I am gushing, but this had to be said. May you create further conditions for world peace. I am doing what little I can on my end.

I would also say that compassion needs to be taught in schools because then children will ask themselves how their dreams and skills will benefit other people as well themselves. That way, generation after generation will develop more natural habits of being charitable and conforming to more cooperative policies with less and less resistance.

Great talk by Meng. Want to mention that I think something was missed on one of the questions: someone asked the question "can a book be written for his 10 year old son". I don't think this book is needed. As parents, we could learn from the book that Meng wrote, set a good example for our children, and pass the information down to them.

Love spiritual theme... "The more we search for ourselves, the less likely we are to find ourselves; and the more we search for God, and to serve our fellow-men, the more profoundly will we become acquainted with ourselves, and the more inwardly assured. This is one of the great spiritual laws of life." ~ Baha'i Faith

Very admirable that you're giving all the profits away. Bummer about the publishing rights, but understandable. I guess there is a trade off between getting distribution and marketing via a publisher in exchange for giving up control over pricing, etc. I don't have any perfect solutions, but encouraging your readers to pass on their copies to others when they are done might be a good first step.

Well, he said that you can start seeing results from mindfulness of breathing in 100 minutes of practice. So, start with 1 minute a day, increase to 10 minutes a day, you could easily log 100 minutes in a month's time.

I didn't really get the practical steps in here. I believe the first was to concentrate on your breathing, and the third was to want good for others. What was the second? Also he said breathing for 10 seconds is like doing one rep at the gym. So how much should we actually do, or perhaps better phrased, is there a recommended amount to get some kind of tangible benefit? I remember he said you can notice something (significant?) in 7 weeks, not sure what the daily commitment to that is.

I thought the audience question at 43:51 was interesting, saying that he imagined perfect contentment might cause people to become undriven and unproductive. I think that if someone really is at optimal emotional health, they may still enjoy relaxation and some unproductivity, but overall, they're going to be motivated to live their life in the way that's most meaningful to them... Growing as a person, accomplishing goals, helping other people. That's my thought.

Perhaps make a HTML version available for free in addition to keeping the print and e-book versions for sale as they are (many books have done this in the past with success). Seems like a really worthwhile message to get out to those who may not want or be able to spend $15.

I guess I must've missed the part mentioning 100 mins. Do you know at that point that was? But to my first question, if step 1 is breath & be mindful, and step 3 is want good for others, what's step 2?
@clairelouise5767
@clairelouise5767 6 жыл бұрын
As someone who has read his works - I believe step 2 would be to cultivate joy within yourself. In other words, to notice the small instances of joy in everyday life (eg. stepping into a warm shower, the first bite of food, a drink when you're thirsty), revel in these and want these for yourself. It is then simpler to want and wish this for others

@gbbroome There is a LOT of free and good online meditation material. Of course Meng may put a spin on it all that is good for corporate environments, but this material has actually been around thousands of years. I could give you a link to my meditation teachers website or a variety of others, but you could just as easily start with the wikipedia entry for Mindfulness. Of course, I'm sure it is worth checking out his book from the library too!

Can someone tell me why they don't teach mindfulness or meditation in schools? Are they really so afraid of happy and free people?
@nikmark01
@nikmark01 7 жыл бұрын
Nikos Batras .. unfortunately the answer is 'yes'.. schools run, and the educational policies are implemented, by a section of the population suited to, and gifted with, the skills of conformity. The only people who can work in that kind of formulaic environment are those who feel most comfortable retaining their 'relative' superiority by containing people. Education is hierarchical.. it feeds the ego's of those we are led to believe know more than others... If you think outside the box you are challenging their status, and relevance. That threatens the status quo, so they happily contain you to maintain their status and the stable comfortable income that comes with it. Sad really.. we spend all that time of our young lives being told to focus on the wrong things.. but the good news is that when you get out into the world you can find the truth.. it can shake you to the core, but it's like being reborn.. but all the while you will meet people who try to break your will, try to push you or frighten back into the herd. The media are obviously the main thrust of that agenda..
