If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at mewe.com/join/... or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.
Check out a few of the videos in these playlists to catch up on what goes on here!

My goodness who would have thought the day would come when I'd watch a young lass on fb chatting away about life while chopping her firewood and I would ACTUALLY MISS Chopping firewood. LOL something I'd done since I was a wee girl over 60 yrs ago. With a debilitating back injury at work 20 yrs ago and with sciatica, it's no longer possible to do lots of things but you, young lady have brought a joy back into my life in these latter years as I watch and listen as you you share your life experiences with us all. Much of your life reminds me of me. Altho my life was lived in NZ & Australia. I'm overjoyed you've found a partner in crime and new land to begin a new life on. Looking forward to it. How blessed were you to have the bears last year ???? Sorry but that was my first thought on your last video announcing the new moves ahead. I just think that was a way of blessing you before you leave, for all your years of living there & looking after nature. Also must say your voice is so easy to listen to. You must be a lovely person and a joy to be part of family & now a special person's life. You and Clay will compliment each other beautifully. Prayers & Blessings from Down Under in Ipswich Queensland Australia 🤗💞🙏👏

So glad you found a piece of land close enough that you can keep your cleaning and gardening clients. Looking forward to seeing the land and the move and all of that. You are such a great example of sticking to what you want in life and being willing to work very hard to get it. That brought you your tiny house (when most people would have given up and moved away) and the tiny house brought you your partner. And together you now have land for more adventures. You are an inspiration to many. Thank you.

Ariel. I watched your last two video’s about 5 hours ago and just can’t get the grin off my face, I’m so happy for you!!! I’m going to miss your little spot there tucked in the mountains but it’s going to be a blast watching you put down real roots aka homesteading. Clay sounds wonderful, would love to meet his dog, Burley’s pal. I’m in awe of you and so proud of you. I’m old enough to be your mom, you are such a joy to watch. I’ve been in since the very beginning, before Burley and even Bear. I don’t post much but never miss a video and often watch the same one several times. Blessings to you and your sweet lady.❤️

When I started looking for a new place 10 years ago, I wanted to be close to the Rocky Mountains because I loved my motorcycles trips. I also checked out what taxes were like in each state for retirement income. Idaho and Wyoming fit the bill. At the time Google Maps had a real estate functions which made it easy to find places that were available with price. After getting a bid on a shop and land rejected, I found a peace of land that I had enough cash to buy and got it with out seeing it. I visited it the following summer and was not disappointed even though it was covered with rocks and no trees. 6 years later I found it was really cheep and easy to get a building permit. Now as I understand the county requires a septic permit before they will give a building permit and address. I guess I avoided that by building a storage building. I built my house inside of the building. I don't tell my neighbors that I use a composting toilet. I didn't think of doing a garden until I started watching your videos, so thank-you for sharing that. Some time ago I saw where a guy from San Francisco bought some land in Hawaii and found that they would only give permits for large houses. So he had plans drawn up for a large house with a detached garage and built that first and when it was finished he stopped and finalized the project getting a tiny house.

All the rules and regulations that make it hard to live simply and harder on the planet are ridiculous and terribly outdated. I saw that video of the guy in Hawaii too. But what a nuisance to want to live a good simple life and be thwarted at every turn. No wonder conspiracy theories abound!

Good advice on how to determine if the property you are looking at will allow you to do what you want. I know in Colorado there is a huge difference between counties throughout the state. There is stuff you can't do on the front range that you are free to do on the Eastern plains and in the Southern part of the state. Colorado also has statewide water rules that are fierce. One thing I will point out is to take everything into account - not just what's on the property but also what's available nearby. Cell towers can be very important depending on your internet/communication needs. Nearness of a Post Office (I know there has been major shut down efforts in many of the remotest areas of the country that had only small post offices). Medical/veterinary facilities etc. Make sure you know what the property is like in all 4 seasons, don't just worry about winter -- especially in the west -- fire season is more dangerous.

It's so helpful that you've covered so many areas to consider when buying property. I live in M & we just lived through a drought, which is unusual here, though they do occur every few years. So I'm finally going to set up rain barrels, at the very least, for watering the shrubs, lawn, gardens & potted plants. I have wanted to build a recycling waterfall for the sight, sound & for the birds to drink from & splash in. As you spoke in general of limitations in CO, where much of one side of my family lives, I recalled learning that in CO, they can't collect rainwater! When we have suffered severe drought, here, there were bans on watering lawns, gardens, washing cars, & the like, so having collected water could save a food garden, if after all their months of work, it would later be fated to just shrivel & die, before a harvest was possible. I happen to live n a city which has, for decades, successfully blocked the dumping of Fluoride & also the 2nd chemical used to try to slow the corrosion of city water pipes due to the nature of fluoride. This is very important to me. Chlorine is necessary however, & I can let my watering cans sit for a few days before watering my plants, to allow most of the chlorine to dissipate, & I can actually drink my very good tasting tap water, though I mostly drink Brita filtered water. Several years ago, my city changed the laws, so now we're allowed to keep chickens & rabbits, maybe other birds like quail, turkeys, geese & ducks, but not sure about that. They do allow keeping Honey bees, & the Noble Weed has been deemed legal here, many years ago.

@@FyNyth Weed was legalized here in MA in 2016, I think it was, but there are always foot draggers bunging up the system. It took years before there was any place to legally buy it. Then finally we had a store open in a small town about 20 miles from here, & I considered going out there, but heard it would be really costly. Then heard on the news there were so many wanting to buy that they a line for blocks, cars trying to park along the roads & walking great distances. They had to make everyone park in a big school or company lot, & had to arrange for busses to periodically drive people over to the store, then back to their cars, in lots, & this went on for a while. They worried about running out so had to limit how much each individual could buy! People were coming in from all over, even from the Boston area. Over the next few years, there were a few stores open in my area & nearby towns. Then the Covid 10 pandemic hit & the MA Governor, normally the most popular governor in the country, decided to shut down all the Cannabis sellers, as they were deemed not necessary businesses, yet all the package / AKA Liquor stores were allowed to stay open. Well, many people were outraged, but surprisingly, they just grumbled, but no one lost their sh*t over it. Of course most people who are regulars could just go back to their usual sources. The pot stores were allowed to open up again, months ago, but I still haven't gone into a store. It will be quite an experience when I finally do. I've been thinking it would be legalized any day...since the 70s! I still forget sometimes that now I can legally grow I think it's up to 6 plants for my own consumption! I wonder if it's legal to buy seeds online, lol. That would be just like typical bureaucratic BS if it's still illegal to buy seeds over state lines - or even in state. Now I'm curious. Our growing season is kinda short. So maybe yes, in some ways we're more evolved than in some states, about some things, but you still have to wonder what people running our cities, towns & states are using for brains.

You are so right about searching for property without running into brick walls. I understand why some areas have those restrictions, however if you want to homestead, live off your land it's necessary to do your homework. A tiny house makes an affordable and workable home for many of us, and yet it's a nightmare to find a place that allows you to park your home. Thanks for sharing your experience and awareness of these conditions people need to be educated in what to prepare for.

We really lucked out because we were just looking for a regular town property and stumbled into our home on an acre at the edge of town in an unincorporated neighborhood. With some cc&rs but they were very minimal. We had no thought of being a small homestead at that time but that is what we ended up with chickens a garden we have rabbits and we have had sheep and goats in the past. It really is important to put your wants down on paper so you really have a clear idea of what you want or you are just running around in circles.

I have an almost identical list as you, I'm up in BC and it is hard to find no zoning up here unfortunately so looking for work-arounds. One more thing to consider, if your land borders what we call crown land (government owned) there could be logging going on at some point. I've looked at land surrounded by crown on all three sides so that would suck if they one day clear cut it!

Happy for all your good news! Just wanted to mention, I live in a historic district in the country’s 13th largest city. I could grow vegetables in my front yard and of course backyard, my neighbors keep bees, I could have chickens (but not a large number of cockerels for fighting), and I can have 3 dogs and 3 cats. When I briefly had 4 dogs, no one made an issue of it. The biggest problem I have had is when a huge old tree came down in a storm and I was visited by a total of 4 code compliance officers. Not sure about the tiny house and compost toilet, but what I heard here about rules in the city is out of step with my experience. Enjoy your new property!!

I did not know that in the US there were laws that would not allow to keep chickens, growing vegetable and stuff like that. In Switzerland there are certain guidelines for animal wellbeing that need to be followed but apart from that people can do a bit what they feel like (as long as neighbouring propeties are not disturbed)

Hi Ariel. Love the video, as always. When you are doing your chopping I’m always glad when there’s a layer of wood in the wheelbarrow because of the noise. When you throw in chunks of wood in an empty wheelbarrow, the noise of that is louder than your voice and I have to really concentrate to not miss anything you say 🤫

I live in Nampa Idaho, Been here for 40 years and I think if you look in the Garden Valley area near Crouch you would have a longer growing season, But if you want it colder you might check out Cascade or McCall or along that corridor. Still a couple hours drive to Boise (where you can get anything) But a place with alot of farms and ski resorts, My daughter is in real estate. let me know if you need help.

You have done very well in partnership with a landowner situation. Do you like to herd cattle? Can you ride a horse? You could be an asset on any ranch? Can you be a crew cook, etc? Start conversations in coffee houses inquiring who might need assistance on there ranch or even 2 acres?? What do you think? Barb

You are truly the best Mama for that puppy! And he knows how to be patient, how in the world did you train him to wait quietly? I have a friend who’s dog starts barking anytime he starts talking, even on the phone 🤨 Do you think you’ll ever get Burley a playmate (puppy)? I could just imagine him running around with a 2nd dog.

Aww thanks. We like each other a lot. He's very talkative with lots of little noises, but less barky than a lot of dogs. That he mostly reserves for squirrels, big birds in "his" airspace, and alerting me to strangers or very big critters. Clay has a dog too and they are best buddies. :)

I may have missed it, but when are you looking at moving your tiny home onto the new property? I wondered if you're going to be gardening this season in the old place or the new place. My partner and I also have a more traditional "free" living here in Cheyenne Wyoming, however, we don't feel very free because there's a limit on the amount of chickens we can have in the city limits, and there are rules about having honey bees, etc. We are in an age gap relationship and in many places we would be looked at curiously and negatively, we're also followers of a more traditional life, such as my staying home, he is the breadwinner, etc.

Aww thanks! It just gets light in the sun. And the past few years I've been outside for the majority of the day, every day. Back in my teens when I worked in a greenhouse for a few years, it went really light blond. All I do is wash it about once a week and try to eat good food. :)

Also! Don’t assume all is okay if you SEE something by land you are looking at: a yurt, TinyHouse, farm animals, business, etc. It could be grandfathered in. The reason an area made certain rules.

Bought property from land clear-cut by a timber company. Rural on a good fishing river. Saw changes coming so bought sixty more acres from the timber company at six hundred dollars an acre. Rural neighbors who had lived and used the land free for five to six generations did not see a reason to buy it up. Next year thousands of acres sold to the county and state for water management and state park . Now the only person for miles that has private river access, and no one or development can come in and build. To access the forestland they mostly have to come up or go down river as no road access. I am hitting 70 and realize the need for some future assistance and luckily a young man is moving in on the road putting in a tiny house. Another young family comes out and I have turned over some of my gardens to them to grow their own food. Both are very much like you and Clay regards to many layers of government control and wanted freer movement. I do see major problems coming regards government overreach and peoples ability to have adequate food.
