Try to handle each one several times each day as they grow up. This will help keep them friendly around people. Cheap feed - raw sunflower seeds...jar them with water and let them sprout (3-4 days). Chickens love it! Quickly multiplies your feed. You could even grow your own sun flowers this year, now that you have some real sunshine available. Have fun with the cute chicks!

Good homesteaders choice for a breed. Suppose to be great foragers & given enough pasture able to do well on little to no feed inputs. Water & let them thrive. Overhead shelter & maybe a chicken wire ground barrier 12" out from the base of the tractor/coop to prevent digging into roost area. BOL

Peeps in the spring ...... brings back childhood memories of getting peeps at Easter and successfully raising them until they were too big to legally keep in a suburban back yard (zoning regulations) ...... plus the fact that occasionally one would turn out to be a rooster and for some reason the neighbors objected to being waked up by a juvenile rooster trying out his new voice ...... our chickens (former peeps) would always be rehomed on my maternal grandparents' farm ...... guess it helped to have parents who were farm kids ...... playmates' chicks always ended up dead ...... no matter how much advice was shared on how to care for them ...... we also got ducks a couple of years ...... those summers were fun ...... the ducks ended up rehomed as well ..... the one year that we had 3, we found a local swim club that had a pond and a flock of ducks and geese, and Doc, Chester and Mr. Dillon went there to live ...... the year I had one duck, she went to live on the farm and quickly imprinted on my grandmother and refused to live in the barn ..... so grand daddy built her an insulated house that stayed on the porch tucked back in the "wood shed" alcove protected from the wind, grandma had her for 3 years and then she disappeared ...... she figured a fox got her when she found a pile of white feathers on the hill in back of the house. Grandma said her eggs were the best ....... grand daddy didn't like them, so grandma had them all to herself.

The only issues I have had with Icelandics is that they are fairly "crazy" as my Dad used to say. The breed has been around for a long time and we had some back in the 90's. They fly pretty well, the roosters tend to be more game chicken like in wanting to fight...everything, they get out of fences, and they are not really friendly. The hen's wanted to brood too much. They do have the positives that you mentioned, but our family found them too "wild" to maintain. We kept 2 hens for the broodiness, otherwise we scrapped the rest and went with short combed varieties of larger breeds like Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Red and Black Star, and Red and Black Sex Linx. I think my favorites were the Australorps. Our Rhode Island Red Rooster couldn't be beat, though. He was about 20 pounds worth of pure muscle that did amazing with his hens.

From a chicken raiser who hasn't lost any chicks for years, you have a good little setup there. I recommend adding some 2" stones all around in the water dish so none of them drown (when they sleep they just flop..even in water). Chicks can't create their own heat, they need the air to be kept around 95° F for the first week(decrease by 5°F after each week), so most people get a chick panel heater (bulbs are fire hazard). Since you are off grid, you will want a temperature gauge on one of those feather dusters to see the air temperature of the air there (don't place on the wall or it will measure the wall temp and not air temp). A huge thing is cork butt, a top reason for chicks passing away, is where poo sticks to feathers and seals the area so they can't dedicate, they will pass quickly if so. To avoid this, you have to move the fluff on your chicks bottom twice a day to check their 'vent' to be sure to remove any chick poo around their vent. Get a handful of qtips, paper towels, and warm water. Use a qtip dipped in warm water to soak the poo, and another qtip dipped in warm water to wipe the poo down and away, put into the paper towel. Once clean, you can use a clean qtip to wipe some olive oil, petroleum jelly etc around the vent area to prevent sticking. Check chicks a couple of times a day for the first few day. With dog behavior, your pupper licking his lips, ears high, pupils dilated is doggy behavior for prey drive activating. It's important to sit a chick next to you, away from him, and teach him the 'Leave it' command. Google it if needed, it's a fantastic command for everything from 'Leave it' to your food, to an area that's a no go, to 'Leave it' for a skunk or bear. Very handy. You want him to be interested with ears relaxed, and able to look around and away from the chick without a stare, essentially being nice and relaxed. As they get bigger, always supervisor him with the chicks/pullets. If he goes to clack his jaws, walk up quickly and tell him 'No, leave it'. These are animals lives and your food, so let him know you mean it. If he starts the stare, ears up, tell him leave it. If he starts to even barely chase any of them, get over there quick and tell him leave it. You can use your body to make him walk away from the area if he keeps at it. He learns if he wants to be in this area, he needs to behave. You are a great owner and person so I'm sure you will do great! I hope these tips help, you may already know some or all, but it helps just in case. Take care, love the videos! From, A Long time viewer and tiny house fanatic! :)

My dad raised four pet chickens in Northern Ontario by building them an insulated shed and then having a simple light bulb on all night. The heat from that was sufficient. You also should not provide water for chickens in the winter because they can get their feet wet and get frostbite. They can stay hydrated by eating snow.

Here in the California Sierra we have Jersey Giants, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington (BEST moms), Wyandotte, who handle our cold winters and hot summers. White Leghorns and Icelandic's did not do well here because they love to fly, and were to skittish. We have fine mesh construction cloth under the coop floor and up the walls under the shakes to keep critters who like to chew into coops, out! And around the coop yard we dug two feet below the fencing and used it up to the fencing for the same reason. With eagles and owls we also have chicken wire 'roofing' over the chicken run/yard.
