@jimmcclure77203 жыл бұрын
For what it is worth.... She wants a safe place to be able to keep any potential predator at bay and to only have to look in one direction. Sorta like a wall at her back. Yes she could have done this in the barn and been safe but instinct is instinct. Animals are pretty darn smart and it would take an awful big critter to try and take on a Longhorn. Hope that makes sense and helps some. I have seen cows birth in some of the most ridiculous places and in some instances had to carry the calf out to get the momma to the barn. Santiana is only doing what her breed have been doing forever.
@vickieturner86883 жыл бұрын
@@jimmcclure7720 Thanks for all that! An animal's instincts are far superior to ours, in some cases. Nature is certainly fascinating!!
@jimmcclure77203 жыл бұрын
@@vickieturner8688 In my opinion animals far exceed the necessity to follow our instincts. I think to a large extent we have lost much of our instinct, or possibly have been taught to ignore instinct as we became more "civilized" for better or worse. For your enjoyment.....lol.... I recall a rainy morning as a teenager going about my morning chores before school and began to call the cows up and noticed one we knew was due to have a calf missing. Figuring she may have dropped her calf I began searching the field to find her. Finally I found her at the far end of the field by an old blackjack tree that had limbs nearly touching the ground. In those day there were no 4 wheelers or side by sides so I walked down to check on her and found that she did indeed drop her calf just a few hours earlier. I tried to coax her to come after me with a bucket of feed and bring the calf along but she wasn't having it. So, I picked up the calf and began walking toward the barn, some distance away, figuring the momma would follow after the baby. Boy was I a dummy.....I got about halfway to the barn and turned to see how the cow was doing and noticed she was still standing down at that old blackjack tree. I called for her and showed her the calf in my arms but she was being stubborn. I had to walk all the way back down to her and let her get another good sniff of her calf and I guess reassure her that it was safe. This time she followed up to the barn. That taught me a lesson to be sure the momma was coming before I got to far. And yes I was wore out from toting that calf around and, again yes, I still had to go to school that morning. But she was a pretty little calf and worth the effort.
