Which apple variety is going to be the next Honeycrisp? University of Minnesota's expert apple breeder David Bedford most likely has the answer. Bedford brought a large selection of unique apples to The Splendid Table studio, where he discussed with Lynne Rossetto Kasper not only the flavor, but the future of apples. Myer's Royal Limbertwig is the best tasting apple I've ever tried. But you'll never find it in a grocery store.

I tried it I bought 3 and and wasn't impressed but it might have been out season because a little soft they definitely had a good taste,if it had a better snap it could be a top apple I'm going to try it in September when they are at their best

It surprises me how many more apples are being bought and consumed across the US since retailers recently began packaging apples in pre-sliced sections. It is scarey to think that US consumers are apparently either too lazy to slice apples themselves or they were not able to think of doing this for themselves. (I'm not sure which is worse.) I am now 70 yo but still somehow able to slice an apple all by myself ! When I am no longer able to do this, could someone just dig a hole at the local cemetery and drop me in ? I am a fairly new grower of apples ( seven ) years now and I planted some Sweet 16 trees three seasons ago this apple is also one which is from the University of Minnesota. This past fall I got to sample a few of them, it was a pleasant surprise. Nice smooth texture with a sweet-tasting flavor.

Below is the only way I ever eat apples because I don't really like them that much but 2 Honey Crisp apples with some sharp cheese and crackers with Guldens' spicey mustard and a glass of chardonnay or chablis is my favorite lunch. But I am flexible on the variety of apple and the brand of crackers. I also seldom drink wine or eat cheddar cheese without the other 2 parts of my 3 piece ensemble. I always slice the apples into thin sections before I begin. This is my lunch 2-3 times a week. Or sometimes I eat this for dinner. It surprises me sometimes how much the taste of one fruit or vegetable can be enhanced by what other things you eat them with. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHW2mXmXqL6kb68 NPR posted a 6 minute video on 2018-05-02 about the history of Honey Crisp apples and how the patent on them changed the apple market kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWXIgotoq7-SkMk This 4 minute Oct 10, 2014 news video from Woodtv.com in Grand Rapids MI, also explains why Honey Crisp apples are so expensive. I can usually buy 3 pound bags at the local supermarket which are less expensive than buying individual apples. I always eat the skin of apples, which is another reason I cut them into very thin slices. WRZ Delaware County, PA metro-Philadelphia

Hello fellow fruit people, My recommend is to try King David Apple if you can find it, it's incredible! I just tried Cosmic Crisp but found it pretty over-hyped. The taste profile is more complex than Honeycrisp and it wins over it in that department, but its density is more like between a pink lady and a honeycrisp. I LOVE Pink Lady for both its density and flavor, but these textures just kinda normalize and to me, you lose that signature juicy "POP" that has made honeycrisp so famous. HoneyCrisp has minimal complexity, but for mouthfeel experience it's still in my top 5 apples, so is Pink Lady, but not Cosmic. It's a good apple, but its entire marketing hype isn't based on it being a stellar apple, but in attempting to synthetically make it the next big club apple with the cool name and hyping it up like crazy. This is an entire industry now just FYI, I forget what my friend in marketing called it but something like "Fishing for foodies"...Because indeed these newer novel varieties are often super expensive, and often pretty meh when you actually get a hold of it, so sometimes it's not even meant to sell but for a season or two (because they realize it just won't live up to the hype, but they can create that hype campaign regardless, and now that apples can be $3 a piece, you better believe it's going on big time.) So just throwing it out there that this is a marketing gimmick being used to try and push everything from crappy beers to crappy fruits. Like Opal (i'm big on density to this one goes into the trash). Incredible sweetness, zero complexity, and mush texture. Not a winner for me, but still a cool example of a pureform "sweet" apple in isolated form. I'm a fig guy so maybe i'm just coming at this with too much of a snooty nature lol because fig growers tend to love trying and comparing them all. Anyway, great video and apples!

once I got a few of those AMAZING honeycrisps that everyone raves about...and I have to agree, they were the best apple I have tasted before and since...but I keep trying to find the quality of those first ones I tried, in terms of turgor and texture, etc...and I haven't found them since in a market. Now my mom was telling me she found some at one of those high end grocers, but she literally paid $20 for four apples...but if I found some of those good ones, I probably would too....but I think I am going to check into one of those mail order farms...wish me luck. And I hope I can find one of those nameless giants in the video...wish me luck:-)

Honestly Honeycrisp are the best apple if they are grown in the Midwest microclimate. Washington grown HC are not good because the trees are stressed. That’s why there yellow and bland.

Been evaluating apples n from jazz swt 16 swt tango now cosmic crisp gotta sat cosmic crisp is the best because of the shelf life. Doesn’t get soft on me n maintains the hard juicy types I prefer. But they gotta quit bein so big as one serving size preferred not a meal on its own. I’d rather eat two if I wanted instead of a 1-2# er !!
