My understanding is that the distributors strip all embedded metadata before re-encoding wav with data that is input by the artist on the album upload page. Also most ISRCs are displayed no dashes.

This video was referring to sending out for broadcast like radio stations etc. when uploading to streaming you’ll have to enter the ISRC code there or they will generate one for you.

If you have ISRC codes without embedding them, will a C.D. maker embed them for you when they are making the compact disc? Also, the vinyl record issue is a little confusing since they sometimes want the full run of the album before cutting it to their liking. How are ISRC's embedding in that process?

There should be some characters in the code that are unique to you. Talk with your CMO.

Use sonaris to open the wav you just wave with the ISRC code and you will see it there. You should do this if you are sending files to radio stations so your royalties can be tracked. Google is your friend for where you can find ISRC codes. Every country is different in Australia you can get ISRC codes by contacting aria.

TY! So I have a question. An indie film used my song file without an ISRC. (I didn't know about any of this stuff yet.) The movie is done now and they asked for the ISRC code. So if I upload the song to cdbaby & assign an ISRC, will the system detect the song in the film? I'm so confused 😭

Hmm thats a tricky question. In Australia you can contact “ARIA” and they generate a code for you - and then for any future releases you can just change the last numbers to correspond with each new track released. Then you would log those codes with APRA to access your royalties generated from those codes. At least that is my understanding. I’m really not entirely sure if it would be a problem to use the code that an online distributor generates.

ISRC codes are important for streaming, however - most online distributors will generate you a code if you don’t have one when uploading. It’s more important to embed an isrc code to a wav file if you’re sending it out to radio stations etc. but it’s still a good practice to do regardless!

In Australia you can get them from ARIA, I think every country has their own place to contact. Otherwise when you upload a track for digital distribution, they generate an isrc code for you automatically, which you could then apply to your broadcast wav when sending to stations.

@@spinlightstudios a few years ago I sent 2 songs to a big radio station in Jamaica I paid for my artists airplay for a month and to date I’ve made nothing from the songs. And to top this off I’m still paying tunecore every month to keep the song on all platforms 😢. I want to cease and deceased but I’m just setting up my website so that’s my next step 😊.
