You are THE artist that has an ability to turn the classic “hot mess” into something that brings out the colour and luminosity of a sea shell…!! I thought it came out really pretty indeed. In fact, better and more interesting than the reference photo. I also think you could come up with several more unique versions of that same reference photo by simply using Inktense and granulation effects, or simply one or the other. I love my Inktense pencils, and have the full set (surprised you there, I know…). Initially I had the original 72 set, then purchased the new 28 colours released last year. They are such fun to use, in particular because when you use it in an incredibly light layer, and add just enough water to dissolve all signs completely, allowing it to dry, then they truly do become permanent. Although they are pure pigment, they get their name from their ink-like qualities of such bold colour and permanence. If you decide to do a small painting, building up thin layers using a light hand, and making sure each new layer is again totally dissolved, then they are completely permanent. I know you also have had the colour lift after it dries like almost every artist I have watched, but if you wish it to become truly permanent, you have to do it slowly, step by step, with full drying time between layers. I love that they can be used in the variety of ways you have shown, as well as my somewhat laboured explanation (sorry, concise words elude me today). There is an artist called Shana Rowe Jackson whose KZbin channel is called “Caution Artist At Play”, and she mainly does realism, but not always. She too loves a good splatter session. She has many many in depth videos on Inktense in all it’s forms, and after watching her both explain and demonstrate the whole permanence thing in many videos, I finally managed to get it to become permanent on paper too. I do believe I spun in a circle (until I became dizzy) in delight that I managed to get one thing to do exactly as I hoped!! 😁👩‍🦼‍➡️💞That was a year or so ago, and yet I still bask in the memory 🤭☺️😁😁😂😂🤷‍♀️🎨🖌️👩🏻‍🎨🎊👩‍🦼‍➡️👩‍🦼‍➡️❤️❤️ I know, sad isn’t it? 😂🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

That’s pretty impressive, Anita! Thanks for sharing all those tips! Derwent never ceases to amaze me in their product quality and ability to continually create new colors to add to their existing lines. I’m thrilled you enjoyed this! The 💦💦splatter session is something that really makes a piece radiate fun! Took me a few years to embrace that😂 Lots of “hot messes” along the way! Thank you so much, my friend. When art enters that dreaded hot mess stage, chances are it just isn’t finished yet!💜💜

Also absolutely LOVE my Inktense pencils! My daughter was going to get me some I want for my birthday last week…instead she got me 6 tubes (mostly Rosa’s…she talked to my best friend, knew what I wanted from their newer releases) and…NO ulterior motives I’m sure, but after I got a small package of empty 1/2 pans with magnetic strips..🙄😂 So..I got 6 tubes minus 2 1/2 pans of each of them. 🤷🏼‍♀️🥰 I’m planning on getting the inktense next month…hopefully.

OOooo! You used a bunch I don’t have! What was the pink one? When I first got my Inktense 3-4 years ago, the pink wasn’t available yet. I ended up getting just a dusky pink derwent watercolor pencil…I got a light cool gray one too, ended up somehow getting a box of 3. Friend and daughter weren’t upset about their new pencils. 😂 I love this! I’ve tried to do something very similar with an abalone shell..I got frustrated and gave up. It was a few years ago, maybe I’ll try and dig it out and see if I can fix it.

One more thing..I think I may have mentioned it before-the Caran D’Arch textured palette?! Anytime I’m playing with my Inktense I bring it out! Great for mixing or just “grinding” (I’m used to grinding my ink sticks on my ink stone, but my tutor recommended I not use my antique ink stone for the colored ink sticks, especially gamboge & red/cinnabar. So, I bought 2 more of those textured palettes that I keep with my toxic pigments, paint chips and ink sticks-in their own box up in a cabinet).

I ❤ the colours you chose and how loose and colourful you painted this. That splatter technique was an eye opener. I will definitely try it! I just got a 24 set of Inktense and am getting to know them. That brush was wonderful, springy and precise. Is it a DaVinci Colineo?

Hi Berolina! Thank you so much- I’m glad this inspired you! Yes, the DaVinci Colineo brushes are just about perfect-I reach for them often! I’ve added the links to the video description. I used a Number 10 sword. Here is the affiliate link: www.dickblick.com/items/da-vinci-colineo-synthetic-kolinsky-sable-brush-sword-size-10-short-handle/ I also have a Number 8 round, a 12 Flat and 2 Riggeers, a 4 and an 8. Hope that helps!🩵👩🏻‍🎨🎨
