As someone who worked in a lighthouse for almost 2 years this is literally very similar to what its like. Very isolating, lots of random waking up because something made a strange noise, and just the feeling of being utterly alone. If youre lucky you get a lighthouse near a city so at least you see people sometimes, those of us who get islands depend on radios and the weekly shipments of food/water to finally talk to people.

What country do you live in that still has manual lighthouses?

Wow. I was wondering how you could make a survival game inside a lighthouse, but this turned out nothing like I could have imagined. Especially since you don't -- cannot possibly -- survive. The thing I realized is that the being that leaves the lighthouse is presumably compelled to send another... let's call them 'sacrifices'... back to feed the lighthouse and maintain the cycle. Since the returned being is so fabulous in relation to the person who left, being created out of all positive qualities, no one suspects the trap when offered the golden ticket, as it were. But, you know, it's all a lie in a way. When you feel all calm and serene after the light has, as you think, sucked your bad qualities out, what must be happening is that you're being tranked with serenity while the light sucks your *good* qualities out to recreate some better variant of you, leaving the "original" you as a swampy mass of fear-goo. I don't even know if that's a good thing or not. I do know that it's a pretty incredible tale for a game that consists of walking up and down a lot of stairs, turning on a light a lot, and some notes. I sure wasn't expecting to have, like, *thoughts* about it! Pretty cool, CJU!

People say they're making Lovecraftian games or stories. Then they just make a bunch of tentacled monstrosities and miss the point. This doesn't even appear to bill itself as Lovecraftian, but is an extremely good example of doing it right.

I was expecting a decent game about depression, and the lighthouse being hope carrying our hero through as long as he stayed on course. What a fool I was. Hope is a trap. 10/10 would descend into darkness again

Wonder why there are so many stories about people working in lighthouses just going insane? Even if there are more than one person. Strange.
@rebornstillborn4 жыл бұрын
Lighthouses tend to be symbolic in works of art. A single light in the darkness = a safety for those lost or isolation and vulnerability. This story capitalized on both of those symbolic meanings I'd say.

I read lighthouse, I think about Cold Skin. That movie could have been so much more, but it still was something hard to forget. I write a lot about this location and I love it. This game in its simplicity really managed to give shape to all the fears a place like this can trigger.

It's ambiguous, but to me, what's going on here is that you are the person visiting the lighthouse, the person that leaves the lighthouse, and the thing left behind, all in one. The note that describes the man with your face and all that is a hint. Instead of you being "reborn" in the literal sense (as the baby cry might imply), I think you are going to this lighthouse to cleanse yourself of whatever bad mojo you've accrued during some portion of your life (perhaps depression, despair, hopelessness, etc.) in a literal sense rather than in a "vacation" sense. The thing left behind that we imagine as a reborn baby/toddler is actually the embodiment of that bad mojo rather than an actual rebirthed you. The person you see in the boat is your cleansed self ready to go back to normal life as a "new, revitalized you" (as described in the notes), but the thing left behind is some kind of decaying husk filled with that bad mojo (the black sludge issuing from every orifice). Might be a couple details I glossed over, but I like this impression regardless of whether it's accurate or not. :) I will say, though, that the lighthouse could really use some balloons and/or confetti cannons. It's a bit depressing as it is.
