The XM is in many ways an absolutely brilliant car! In other ways not so much. I have an 98 Turbo CT. The hydractive 2 suspension is still better and more advanced than just about any moderna car. The complexity of the car. Jesus! The amount fixing big and small things that I have done during the 5 years I have had the car is mindblowing. It is a lot of work to keep it running. But I still love it…..

overlaps, and even unpainted inner surfaces are perfectly fine in my limited experience, as long as you flood things with proper cavity protection. Even at the expense of drilling some holes afterwards :D If I want to sleep better at night, I re-spray the cavities every 3-4-5 years, that works really well.. lately I don't even paint anything that'll go inside of some cavity, welding would just burn it off anyway, and it might prevent the cavity wax from creeping in between the plates.

Im always conflicted on the paint on inner parts stuff... I agree ... it will burn off where it's most needed.. on the seems! that is where it will rust again.. And also... When I opened up the box section on the AZU van from 1950s and found unpainted and UN RUSTED metal it was another proof... It's probably not necessary to do... but it looks pretty!

@@SeasideGarage sure, it's not a bad thing to paint those, I'm just lazy, so I built that argument for myself :D I especially hated that I had to wait for the paint to dry between stages

Blimey that’s a bonkers design, get that entire area full of cavity wax with a corrosion inhibitor…….you don’t want to be doing that again!

Great job, however I’m wondering if the rust is caused by water sitting in that lower panel, and rusting it, I would drill in sizable drain holes for debris to be able to pass through, then spray the snot out of it with whatever rust protectants you got available even hot wax! , the half of the lower part of the outer most panel has that rough bed liner finish that will hide anything! Great job!

Excellent improvisational repair! We call those "butt clamps" around here. Get your minds out of the gutter 😊

never seen butt clamps which you can remove all the parts without leaving a piece of steel inside. That is why i made these :)
