I had that issue on my 1995 1.3 petrol Polo. The alternator charge regulator failed. The battery boiled over and damaged the engine compartment. The VW main dealer replaced the alternator 4 times and the same thing happened over and over before they realised that VW had changed the part reference. The 5th time they put on another alternator and I’ve never had an issue since. That was in 2004. The car is still going strong and has just passed 225,000 km. Alkaline laundry detergent and Hammerite paint saved the engine compartment from rusting too much where the battery acid had overflowed.

Hi, my dad had a Datsun 120 in 1976 it was fa tactic compared to British made cars, it started straight away no matter the weather, did about 50 mpg and you knew when you got in it you would get there and back with no issues 👍😀

I’m thinking this car was called the 510 in the states, I worked at a small Datsun dealership as a car wash boy, I was like 14, loved these Datsun’s, we also had Volvo Toyota and Fiats too.

The video made me smile, I was on holiday back in the 70s driving an Opel Manta A series and noticed the volt meter was showing fully charging constantly ! But as I was far from home there wasn’t much I could do apart from wedging a piece of cardboard between the contacts then after a day or so removing it then fitting it back again. It wasn’t until I returned home I realised the plug underneath the regulator had become slightly detached once pressed back into place all was fine 🤷🏻♂️

Wow, I'd forgotten about these types of regulators. If I remember rightly, one of the relays, think it's the left hand one, should operate and release, to control the voltage to the battery. As the voltage rises, the coil of the relay should become energised and operate the armature, thus stopping the voltage flow. As the voltage flow lessens, the coil of the relay is de-energised and the armature releases to allow for voltage flow again. This repeats therefore the voltage is regulated. Key to this working is an intact and working coil, and the correct gapping from armature to coil and also the actual contacts that these operate. As a quick check, when the car is running, you should be able to hear the relay working on and off. If you can, then suspect the adjustment of the contacts; if you can't the coil may be dis, and need replacement . Hope this helps. Loving your work.

Later model A12 / A14 engines have alternators have INTERNAL regulators (more powerful too) , bypass the external factory regulator and use one of these or a qg18de alternator from a Nissan Sentra

Nice! Love the small jobs done on a car. Great that you managed to apply the rubber covers. The relay is repairable, but I guess it's better to go with semiconductor solutions for the battery's life sake ;)
@clausessemann2072 Жыл бұрын
I believe you can use a universal 6 pin 12v alternator regulator relay
@SeasideGarage Жыл бұрын
Yea that got to be possible... :) But I actually just found a used relay right now!
@bencem.1862 Жыл бұрын
Or even better, an electronic one :) If I remember correctly, these mechanical ones regulate by swiching the generator rotor on and off a few times every second, with some proportion of the RPM even, so they basically do some crude form of pulse width regulation.. even when they're new they're not very precise... My guess is that you can adjust things with bending the contactors, but without tools and experience, and knowing exactly what you"re doing, it's almost impossible :/ With an electronic one, you most likely have the standard 4 or 3 connectors, easy to figure out how to connect it, and you're set for eternity 8)

maybe could you fit a modern alternator that does away with the need for the relays,,carry on the good work,
@SeasideGarage Жыл бұрын
I will try to fix it and keep it original if I can :)
@sinorman231 Жыл бұрын
yes your right maybe its a common part across early Datsuns,or remanufacture if not many years ago i removed a dynamo charge system from an old Austin Mini, it was an acceptable change for alternator it made such a difference no more flat batteries and the lights were so much brighter was biggest thing i noticed

Hi! Take a look at Moss motors ltd here on KZbin, there's a lot of info about these old regulators, it's easy to adjust the amount of power the regulator is putting to the battery and it's easy adjustable. I bet you can use your old regulator! Cheers, CitromeC 😊

Though originality is always a good thing, maybe it'd be a better idea to fit a more modern electronic regulator, given old car & old wiring, having all that go up in smoke would ruin the originality a bit... :S And yes, My Summer Car is a fun game, frustrating as heck at times, but fun... :P
@bjarnesrensen7408 Жыл бұрын
@twocvbloke I don´t think that charging relay is originally to the car. I noticed it is branded "Motorcraft". That is the brand for original Ford spare parts.
