That Skoda Rapid was pretty poor for a relatively new car. 30 seconds of cranking, too much revving and then a stall. Must be something wrong with the glow plugs or something.

2000 VW Golf 1.9L TDI here. Almost 400,000 miles. Never fails to start with one glow plug cycle and only crank for a second or less. When cranking never go for more than three seconds at a time. Burn up starter. Each time engine is cranked battery amperage is reduced. Prolonged crankling results in starter heating up quickly. Scorch the brushes which cause higher resistance. I have a 900 cold-cranking battery so I'm sure to fire up the first time I crank every time.

When the glow plug light goes out it doesn’t mean the power has been cut to the glow plugs, it means you can start it. So there is no reason to cycle the glow plugs, they actually remain powered on for a short time even after the engine has started.

I used to own an 1982 mazda 626 diesel and had a hard time starting in the winter. I later found out that it had an electric inline fuel pump that was put in place by a previous owner but was not working due to wiring. I went ahead and hooked it to a manual switch and wala staring in the winters in Utah were no more a problem. I guess the diesel would drain out of the mechanical fuel pump overnight and would make it difficult to start in the morning. My procedure was I would turn the electric pump on first untill I could hear the pump get quiet I then knew the lines were primed and then I would proceed to depress the accelerator all the way to the floor and crank the key, it would fire right up. I wonder if some of those hard starts are due to fuel draining back to the tank.
@philje1233 жыл бұрын
I had this issue on a SAAB Twin Turbo diesel I had. The return fuel lines from the injectors (so not under pressure) had gone porous and would allow air in when parked over night leading to poor starting and a lumpy idle.

Recently switched back to petrol for the first time in about 13 years and I don't regret it. We had temps down to -18c in February and my 1.4 TSI fired straight up with no extra cranking or lumpy idling etc. Even with it's failing battery (which did fail after a week due to short journeys with lots of heated seats usage!) It was firing straight up.

I have to wonder if the reason the Toyota wouldn't start was because the piston rings wouldn't hold enough compression at 600,000KM. Sure, the engine was at a disadvantage because it was a mechanical injection prechamber engine, but even a modern engine would be difficult or impossible to cold start if it couldn't pass a compression test. Thankfully, if that truck body was in good shape, rebuilding the engine might not be too expensive and worthwhile.
