Farmer Chris, I especially appreciate what You and all your fellow farmers do. I've been on social security disability since getting hurt on duty as a vol Firefighter. I cannot live on my monthly dividend without the support and donations of food from our local farmers. Please keep up the good work and i'll keep you and Your crops in our prayers.

It certainly comes down to cash, the business and environment. Always thought that farm machinery was just over priced in comparison to other industries. Good comparison provided in the podcast Dirt Perfect. Thanks also the Farmer Chris and MBTS.

"Rent or buy" (without "lease", as I remember it) was what made Andrew Camarata start his collection of gear. The considerations of you all three made sense. (Me, I can't judge: I'm an urban European.)

I really enjoy these podcasts, not to take away from your other channels but, this shows the planning and thought processes that goes along with the jobs. I, myself is not a lease type of guy. I have rented some equipment in the past that I don’t own, I pretty much own everything I need now.

Nothing like 3 guys sitting around discussing things, never fails that it jumps 90 different was from the planned topic but it always rolls back into it and makes sense why it happens. Good topic to me because i wasnt really sure how a lease worked and now i know i dont have a need for one unless its for a piece of equiptment, thanks for the info. Kind of hurts to hear a farmer is riding across a field on $500k worth of equiptment and hearing about govt shipping out a lot of product overseas and buying substandard stuff for our food intake from there too

Good podcast. I can definitely relate to this one as I have rented leased and owned and seen the benefits and bad parts of all. Personally after doing all 3 I prefer to own but with the price of our farming equipment see the Benefits in leasing. I bought a new tractor last week, $100,000.00 when signing the paperwork the thought of closing the farm and buying an excavator with that $ crossed my mind. I could probably be better off financially with an excavator but I love farming. Both are wonderful lines of work. 😊

The problem with Farmer Chris’s versatile not shutting off is because there is no diode on the B+ feed to the alternator. The alternator is keeping the system energized. Probably needs a 6a diode installed.

To me this is a timely release of rent vs leave vs buy. I've been looking at doing something different than the crap I'm in now, I'm leaning toward farming. But with family commitments and the overhead needed for land, equip, etc, its a little overwhelming. I know I can get grants/loans, whatever from the govt.But don't want uncle sam in everything I do. Especially with some of the regulations dictated down. This time we live in is hard to be an entrepreneur.

I think that’s crazy that you pay property taxes on equipment. I guess it depends on how much it is. But my 2 acres cost me 20,000 a year in property taxes. If they charged my equipment too no one would be able to afford anything haha. Great show guys, as usual.

I'm an advocate for owning, but I see the benefits in renting and leasing as well. One thing you mentioned though is renting costs you money even if it's sitting. This really isn't true. If you are a business owner and know what you're doing financially, then when you bid the project you are factoring in rental costs as well. This essentially means that the client and not you is paying for the rental.

Rental equipment business makes good money in the right area but they are a lot of headaches that comes with them. You have people that don't really have any business run any type of equipment renting stuff and breaking it. The maintenance and up keep is a killer.

Maybe this is more of a farmer chris question, but does depreciation(for tax purposes) become a benefit when buying new, or do you lose that when leasing? And does that even factor in to your buying decisions?

Come on DP ,that black truck was junk ,I cant imagine why you thought it would have been worth buying ,unless it was free ,there is a point in machinery and truck life where it's not worth time ,money and effort they normally have worked their live out , logical thinking surely ? Regarding lease or buying either way you don't really own them ,the banks own them ,you work them hard ,wear them out and then have to borrow more money or spend mega bucks on repairs, keeping the machines newish is the balance to juggle 😉
@johnunsicker7440
@johnunsicker7440 Жыл бұрын
THE black truck for what is was wanting it for and his skills set he has he could have made that a good truck for his business. Like he said 5000 miles a year he would drive it. Was the truck a over the road run it hard everyday truck no but once a week yes that truck would of got the job done. You got to look at what you are using or wanting the equipment for and how much you are going to be using it to know what you need. If you brought new and own it you can control how it is maintain so the upkeep will not be as bad as if you brought used without knowing what it was like. IT is all a guess. each one has it place of each company.

@johnunsicker7440
@johnunsicker7440 Жыл бұрын
@@afewpointsfromperfect Yes there is value in that truck for the right person. For you it would of work just fine because you wasn't looking to start a hauling business you was just looking to get your rock to your sites and that it. Like you said 5,000 miles a year or so. You have the skills and MBTS to fix it up and make it what you need. The farmer just upgraded his end dump trailer it was 43 years old still a good trailer was just starting to nickel and dime them so they got a newer one. In there case there are hauling 200 to 300 loads of grain, lime and limestone each spring in a month or two plus stuff through out the year. They need something a little bit better and newer just so they don't have the down time. The other trailer would make someone a great trailer that only wanted to do 20 to 50 loads a year. Like you have said many times you got to know what you needs are and get something to full them and not go overboard. The 8500 you sold in no time because it was probably priced right still a good truck body frame wise and even the bed was ok for someone not wanting to do a lot with it but needed it sometimes.

You missed the whole point of the podcast. It was trying to explain why some buy rent or lease and what makes sense for one does always make sense for someone else in the same work. MBTS place he works out doesn't make sense for them to have 100 lifts sitting in south Indiana when they are working all over the US. Trucking cost and extra man power would kill profit. Better to rent them in the area there are at and besides a company that size walking in and saying I need 10 lifts for a month will get you a better price then i need one lift for 4 hours.
