I worked for a farmer, a small farmer here in Illinois and still do from time to time, but he only had wroughly 300 acres or so and he taught me about everything y'all have discussed. The one thing he said that has always stuck with me is that farmers are the only ones who go in dept and bust there ass all year long just to break even at the end of the year. He is a very deverseafied individual and he's one of the smartest men I know at the age of 90 and he never made it to 4th grade. I have nothing but respect and love for our farmers. My hats off to you farmer Chris and to Dale the gentleman who forever earned a place in my heart.

This is fascinating, as everything chris has said is happening in the uk, here a local farmer i know always said farming is the only industry that buys at retail prices and sells at wholesale. Also supermarkets have a lot to answer for here regarding trying to hammer down what they pay for crops. Love chris, hes very knowledgeable. Look forward to your podcasts. I liked the part about money being asset rich but not account rich, problem i see now is when companies say the so many million or billion in bank, or debts, it money on a screen now rather than having that money in a safe in cash or whatever.

Hey Mike and Chris, as a business owner I totally agree with your philosophy. In 2008 we took a major hit only being project-based, but since then we have diversified our services and client base. We increased our business by 50% each year during the pandemic. Now I just owe more taxes.

Just sit here listening to your podcast from the UK it all goes exactly the same here, all businesses it seem face the same challenges where ever you are, it is nice to know we are not alone in the struggle.

Man you guy's hit on so many great points that I've been saying for a few years now. Thank goodness there are more people like you two in this world! I believe this junk that the media is pushing down our throats is just a fad! And I also believe there are more people that don't feed into the fad than there are the ones that went off the deep end, so to speak! Like having more compassion for animals that a human being. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of compassion for animal, they have fed humans for millions of years! I love my dog too! But until the time when humans have more compassion for each other this world is on a downward slope. Without farmers we will not survive! So much respect for the small farmers that have been doing it for generations! More so the older I get! I was raised on a farm and know the work that goes into it for running it. It gave me the values I use in my life today. This was very informative and interesting from two very smart men! Thanks!

Good morning Mike and Chris. Thanks for this informative program. It's a shame how our country has mistreated our farmers and sending so much to other countries. I hate picking a product and seeing Made in China. God Bless our country, Farmers, and You All. Merry Christmas.

My Father was stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND for 11 years and I was stationed there for about two years. Sugar Beets and Sunflower seeds were there main crops in that area. They would do Sugar Beets for two years and Sunflower seeds for one year. The soil was very rich with that rotation.

one thing not mentioned, unless I missed it, is the relationships you build over the years. one of the most important things I have learned from working with my father since I was about 8 years old is the network of people you work with, we work with other contractors instead of compete against them, we have been in business since 1972 and have had 0 complaints with the contractors board and BBB, plus we have built a diverse network of relationships that there isn't much if anything we can't do to make money, the only thing that holds us back is the lack of good employees that know there stuff and who are willing to put in the work, but at least we have those relationships that we can refer the work to or sub it out and still be able to make a small profit from in the form of commission or we are able to get a contractors price and add a percentage for profit.

This is also why farmers don't plant just one seed number for all there corn or soybeans for the year. One you need what works for each field and to you got to have something that can do in a drought if you don't get the rain you need. So Chris might have 4 to 8 different seed corn numbers he plant. Like Chris said it is legal gambling. You pick your seed based on your normal growing season hope you get it in time and that you don't get a early frost.

Something that you didn't mention is the guy that is " brand loyal " when it comes to buying equipment , and then runs into problems with getting parts and service . If he had diversified his brand choices , he could still be working despite parts availability / service issues from the " preferred brand " .

Farmer Chris what advice would you give someone that has the opportunity to farm their family farm with the purchase of some older, smaller used equipment. Around 120 acres and still have a full-time job with plenty of vacation time.
@farmerchris110 ай бұрын
The land can be considered a protected investment if you pay for it with non ag money, but that’s where I would be careful and drawing the line, make sure the farm cash flows on its own, don’t pump off farm income into the farm just farm, you sure can go down a rabbit hole pretty fast.
