The Walker Sisters Cabin still stands proudly deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is home to a most interesting story which is packed full of history and much intrigue.
Just a little over a mile past The Little Greenbrier School, the Walker sisters resided in an old log cabin they had lived at for many decades. They were eventually forced to endure a deep-seated change away from their normal mountain living. The land that they owned would later be taken over by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after decades of flourishing and living there.
The Walker Sisters cabin and their story is one we’ve been very excited to vlog, document, and share with you. The hike that takes you to their old mountain-dwelling is a scenic one, and upon finally arriving at their log cabin, many traces of the Sisters’ lives can still be easily put together... with remnants of their years, left behind, for wandering mountain travelers like us to discover.
Sarah and I are loose in the Great Smokies and were excited to finally have the opportunity to explore the well-known Walker Sister Cabin, home to the last remaining family to actually live in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after the park was established.
A remarkable story of overcoming the challenges that life brings when change takes place...The Walker Sisters endured much and managed to repurpose their lives, not give up and keep moving forward.
Come along with us into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as we hike in to find and explore the cabin.. and the story of The Walker Sisters.

I’m grateful to have stumbled upon this video! I was 5 years old when my parents and grandparents took my sister and I on a summer vacation to the Smokies. We actually met the two remaining Walker sisters at their cabin. I remember them inviting us into their main living room (where you see the rock fireplace). They talked about the history of the place. Spread on tables were parchment copies of poems. Across the fireplace mantle were framed photos of relatives and poems. I remember some doyles that were hand-tatted. I remember some wooden blocks for children’s toys. I think I remember a hand-stitched quilt hanging over a line on the porch. I remember some apple pies. These were all things that were for sale, and not costly, but enough to raise money for whatever they needed. The sisters were cordial, and seemed to enjoy that we had come to visit them. They were dressed in the Appalachian dresses that you see in their final photos here. I don’t know exactly when I heard that they had both died, but I knew this as an older child - so that tells you how much reach their notoriety had, especially since we didn’t live near the Smokies. I always wondered, as a child, why anyone would want to live so deep in the woods, away from modern civilization. Though, I noticed that they were fully conversant, spoke with an Appalachian accent, and didn’t seem to mind the lifestyle - didn’t want to leave their home. There must’ve been a lot of love in that family and much sentimental feeling toward the memories they shared there. I wonder if I had lived there as a youth, could I have resisted the “pull” of city life? Would I have been educated and conversant? The trends toward modernization would pull heavily on all Americans as the years proceeded. I think we are better off in many ways, but we should never forget the values that caused us to survive and treat each other as part of our large human family, all valuable and worthy of respect. Thank you for the video. I’m now 64 years young, so I’m aware of the approaching issues of being a Senior, and remembering the things that make life meaningful. Hard work, loyalty, skills, love, and a connection to our Creator.

I'm Dixie Walker Stevens. Stayed with them while my family did their shows and I went to 1st grade at Greensboro school. I have the little blanket that was made for me by my Aunt Louisa. I'm waiting for my car to come in and I will come and visit. I'm 72 years old today. My family found steamer trunks because I once was a child star. Looking forward to seeing everything.

Breaks my heart that these five sisters had to sell their land for such a small amount and had to give up their way of life. I wonder how many other families were put into the same situation? I guess it was necessary so there could be a Smokey Mt Park regardless of lives being disrupted are not!

This video should be presented somewhere in the national park- stunning presentation. As our friend Bob and I have discussed, one of the biggest crimes in the KZbin world is that Quest Capsule doesn't have hundreds of thousands subscribers and views. Salute to you Scott. Hopefully this helps you toward the audience you deserve.

Can we leave a footprint upon the earth as we each pass through this life into forever. I have touched the Walker Sisters home with my bare hand and stood watching butterflies fluttering in the winds of time ticking by. tick tock tick tock, each second passing by we each move forward in this life toward forever with God. I love this video, and cried through most of the screens. It was heart felt and given freely to all to enjoy and learn of people as you and I in this life, we too will leave our footprints in time. If we can give a little kindness to others as we go by them then they too shall feel God's hand upon them once an forever more,. thanks for sharing. God blessing's upon all.

In the late 1990's my family and I lived happily without anything modern in a tiny 4 room house, an outhouse and an outdoor shower. We cooled our food in a running brook 15 feet from our home. Our water came thru a rock, gravity brought it to our home but had to be strained of bugs, pebbles and lots of dirt with cheese cloth over a gal pitcher. Kerosene lamps and candles were our lights and, of course, we had 2 wood cook stoves; one on porch for summer cooking/baking and a bigger one in kitchen area for warmth and cooking/baking in the cold. This was in Cookeville, TN. I actually miss it. Transportation was by walking, horse and wagon or hire a car and driver. It was a healthy life style.

I hiked the trail yesterday. Made it to the footbridge . Then saw a big black bear. He probably would have continued on his was. But I instead turned around and didn't get to see the cabin. I will try again later. Thanks for the video.
