I have the exact same dutch oven. When I store it for more than a month, I'll put some rice in the bottom and a couple folded paper towels half way in so air can get in. If you do that, you shouldn't have any rust problems. Thanks for the video!

Called a self-basting lid as it allows the moisture to drip back on whatever is cooking. Ideal for roasts and such. Can see how it could serve the purpose of holding charcoal, although it seems that would burn the finish off, but more seasoning could be applied afterwards and probably no biggie since it is just the lid anyways. Recently started watching from the time of the move. Enjoying the videos very much. Y'all living the good life. Best Wishes.

Old dutch ovens were sanded longer before being sold. See how rough texture it seems in the bottom? Mine is like that too. If you get some fine grit sandpaper and sand the bottom for a bit and get them smoother before seasoning it will help tons. Just another little tip there.

Btw, you can put it on campfire and the crusties will fall off/burn off, can turn back silver color, do that every couple years. After each use you dry it on the stove. You don't have to add oil each time you wash it. But it's you best pan

I live about 25 miles from the Lodge Manufacturing Plant in South Pittsburg, TN, and they say any oils or fats can be used to season their cast iron, they don't recommend all of them. Typically, vegetable oils, corn, canola, or shorting tend to be best, because they have a higher smoke point and they are flavor neutral. Animal fats are not as good because they do have a flavor and they can go rancid. However, whatever is available and has a high smoke point is okay.
@beejereeno2
@beejereeno2 3 жыл бұрын
Animal fat does not go rancid. Seed oils/vegetable oils do, but you never notice because they have been deodorized and made to be industrial. They're not for human consumption , despite the marketing that they are.

I used a big dimple lid pot like this for years but usually to brown fat back then load it to overflowing with greens using only the water left on the greens for liquid in the pot. They soon shrunk down and the dimples were used to simmer the greens for a while while the liquid condensed on the lid and dripped back down from the dimples. That made the best tasting pot liquor and cornbread dipping sauce ever. I heard you say they were used for charcoal and have never heard of that . Could you explain more? I loved that pot so much and have no idea what became of it when we moved into town. It certainly would have been a 'passed to another generation' gift.

You can also put your dutch oven and cast iron skillet in a regular oven. Season the pan or dutch oven with your favorite oil first. Preheat the oven to 425° F. Then put the skillet or dutch oven in the regular oven and let it season for an hour or so. Take it out of the oven and put it on top of the stove to cool off. Then your iron pan or dutch oven is ready to go for its next meal! You can do the same thing with the lid! Happy cooking! Bye! 👋

Since I have never managed to master caste iron cooking, my question. If one was to cook with really spicy seasoning like jalapenos and the like, does the oil from that get soaked in?
@Oldmane-420
@Oldmane-420 9 ай бұрын
Three tricks to master cast iron cooking1) don’t wash with soap, use clear water and a metal scrubber( steel/ copper wool) you can use plastic wool also. 2) Always heat dry your pan after cleaning, and it doesn’t hurt to reapply oil before storing. 3) preheat your pan before adding ingredients, it helps prevent sticking. Should the situation arise where you (gasp!!) burn something in the pan, turn heat to high, allow pan to become very hot than pour one- one and a half cups of clear water into pan, allow to boil vigorously for a moment, cool down and clean as normal. I just discovered this Chanel and like to read comments, saw your comment and understood immediately what some of your issues might be. My mother used mostly cast cookware but I never learned all the ins and outs of cleaning and care until we’ll into adulthood, thought I would save you some time, if you haven’t discovered them already. I now have two full sets of cast iron, one for my kitchen ( all enamel coated)) and one for camping, cooking over flames tends to add carbon to the exterior of the cast, fine when your outdoors, not so fine in the kitchen! Good luck and good cooking.

sorry but yes lard is ok if the pot or pan is used daily. But lard or grease will become rancid with a bad smell and then transfer over to your food. Grape oil, sunflower or a good olive oil is the best. My grandmother used bacon fat also but like I said it was used daily.

How to get rust off cast iron: 1) Set oven to highest heat setting. 2) Put rusty cast iron in oven. 3) Let bake for one hour. 4) Turn off oven. Leave cast iron in oven until completely cooled. 5) Take cast iron out. Dust off rust. (yes, yes, the high heat removes the rust!) 6) Give a little rinse off, NO SOAP, and dry with towel. 7) Turn burner on medium low heat, and place cast iron onto burner until all water has evaporated. 8) Heat oven to 400 degrees. 9) Shut off stove top. 10) Using a scant amount of crisco, apply a very thin layer all over cast iron. 11) Taking a clean dry cloth, WIPE ALL GREASE OFF CAST IRON!! 12) Put cast iron in oven, upside down, and let bake for ONE HOUR!! 13) Leave in oven until completely cooled. YOU ARE WELCOME!! P.S. If you have smoke in your kitchen, like this joker has, THEN YOU ARE USING TOO MUCH GREASE!! WIPE IT DRY!! He used too much grease, never wiped it off, smoke everywhere, and will make your cast iron sticky. Washington State

Appears to be a cast iron pot often confused with a dutch oven, minus the ridge on the outer lid to hold the hot coals in place. Can it be used as a dutch oven? Of course it can. Has it been popularly misidentified in the past? Yes. Manufacturers have even done as much. That said it does not take away from the video any at all. Never been a fan of cast iron. I have tried in the past, but never had any luck with seasoning or them being nonstick.
