I listened to this album a while ago when it came out, everytime I went to see my really sick grandpa to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital where my friends at the time, I am too, that's why. They told me they did everything they could, but my grandpa was going to die. I was blind of hope. Eventually he passed away. This album gave me that sense of beautiful hopelessness that Death is just a transition. So it helped me to face reality. Helped me with grief and mourn. I miss you both, Papa Julio, Papa Beto. Great men they were.

Godlike musicianship and songwritting, something that you don't see often together in metal. This album also seem more romantic classical era oriented than the two previous album.
@jamespeterson42757 жыл бұрын
Huge Romantic period fan and I've only heard the title track so far and can't quite hear how you hear that comparison from that one. Could you pls explain what about it musically makes you think it's more romantic than the previous two? Usually I tend to think a lot about how harmony modulations became a lot more stark and chromatic in that time in compositions. Thankssss
@jarithesaunalover60087 жыл бұрын
To be honest, i have almost no theory but sound wise, especially when Tim start to sing in the first track it really give me a romantic classical music era vibe. The other two had classical elements in it but more in a song structure aspect, this one seem to have more classical aspects sound wise.

Has anybody heard of Kalisia? If you like this kind of prog metal with some experimentation you should give Kalisia a try. They include keyboards, flutes, sax and other stuff in their mix. And the music is mainly death metal, kind of melodic but very progressive, but difficult to "label" as they have thrashy riffs, some power-metal epicness, even some black-metal-like rhythms, industrial, definitely Dream Theater influences, you can also hear some Cynic riffs (Paul Masvidal appears as a guest guitarist), it has everything. Female clean voices with traditional Death Metal vocals. Kalisia's only album is like a one-track album, you cannot tell when a song finishes and the next one starts. It is very easy to listen to because it feels like one long song.

The progression of Ne Obliviscaris is quite interesting: "Portal of I" was a culmination of all the years of hard work and had a distinct atmosphere to it, where the chord progression and the excellent use of the sus2/add9 chords carried the deep emotions. The general direction of them became quite clear with Citadel. With Citadel they took Bosch´s paintings, especially "The garden of earthly delights", as inspiration to create a conceptual musical piece. A tryptichon in painting shall be a tryptichon in music. So we got "Painters of the tempest", which is a masterwork from many angles like music theory, composition and sound mastering. The most important thing by recreating a piece in a different way is always the core idea/core feeling. The german philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote a great description about art and its essence in the third book of "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung §49 - 51", which to your luck is avaiable in english. With "Urn" we get a reimagination of ancient art. To completly undestand the pieces of Ne Obliviscaris, you have to dive into the core of the concept itself, which in the end is pure emotion, or the final platonic idea. This is why Ne Obliviscaris gets more interesting with every listen.

Sound words there Tamino. Citadel is so Hieronymus Bosch, it screams so. I was always of the impression that while NeO draw heavily from conceptualised art - art defined and explained in history of art terms - Libera is a musical interpetation of Italian classics - such as Botticelli, Caravaggio. In the visual aspect of their lyrics, particularly the only available video they produced for the album, they seem to offer a more scattered than precise image of their interpretation of art. Ancient art seems to me to be the medium, not the objective. But I'll give it to you that their music takes some thinking to get into. Listening to their music, in my poor judgement, is a liberating experience.

Urn is actually a fairly interesting place for the bassist, since they sadly had to remove their long time bassist a few months before recording. They found a great Dutch bassist called Robin Zielhorst who wrote a lot, with influence from the old bassist. They've since got a new bassist, Martino Garattoni. He also plays in Ancient Bards. It will be very interesting to see what he'll bring to the next album that hopefully will be done at the end of 2019. Martino actually has a lot of different styles, including jazz! As for Caligulas Horse, they'll be touring together next year in Australia!

Another masterpiece of an album, loved the hint of classical music vibes in this. Another dimension to Ne Obliviscaris. Cheers!
