Love it! Such a nice crisp, clean quality to the scene and the brush strokes. Values communicate the scene well and I loved your comments about the minimal brush strokes, particularly in the clouds to make them there but unimportant. A nice little almost subliminal feeling that doesn't detract from the scene. Nice piece!

The Mind of Watercolor exactly! I learned a lot about having a softer hand from James Fletcher Watson and David Curtis. I don’t know if you follow them but their APV tutorials are amazing. I rewatch them over and over. Those guys are probably my favorite watercolorists in the world.

The Mind of Watercolor they’re remarkable and I think you’d really like JFW. He’s so gentle and his paintings suit his personality. He has an excellent way of explaining and teaching. Unfortunately he passed like 6 or so years ago but I love his work and person. Ask Brian Ashmore... I won’t shut up about him in texts. Hahah

When I studied graphic design in college they showed us how to use gouache for logos and designs, but never taught us to use it to paint like this... this is so much fun to see.

geckonia oh wow! That’s cool. Yea- it was often used in illustration too before digital because of its quick drying and matte quality. :)

Same for me. In design school we did solid colour and mixed to a creamy consistency usually for packaging design or logos etc.. Seeing Jared's gorgeous paintings using gouache is such an inspiration. I am an oil painter, large scale, and do lots of smaller, everyday sketches and drawings, so these small paintings of Jared's remind me of an oil look but in a completely different water medium. Very nice.

I found your channel today and I loved the content. I love to draw and paint since I learned to hold a pencil but it is an activity that has always occupied a secondary place in my life. I'm Brazilian and here the access to drawing courses is not for everyone, so I found myself lost trying to learn everything by myself. Thanks to the internet this has changed and channels like yours are very important to me, it's a way to talk about paint and learn. Now I'm trying to make the painting more present in my daily life so I started to make small sketches twice a week or more. Although I do not have painting as a profession and do not devote most of my time to it (I study philosophy instead) it will always be an important part of me. I hope the outburst was not tedious but I think it's important to recognize and congratulate content that touches me in some way. Thanks for posting!

Once again loaded with info and your thoughts. I had to watch a couple of times to get the information. I guess it might be because our local store is a large walmart and there is nothing so beautiful to think about or paint, unless you want to count fast food places. Personally I like the leftover light brown in the sky from when you made the change. Now for the serious stuff, you and Brian order the moargwash t-shirts and we will all take one too.

Ack, the infamous "drawing what you think, instead of what you see"! I fall into that pot hole on a regular basis. The many colors of a road as the sun hits it, as it curves and dips, as shadows fall on it. Keep saying it, it's gotta stick at some point :) Thank you!

You seemed to be very careful when peeling back the making tape there, I don't know if you were concerned about tearing the paper or something? Apparently if you stick the tape to something with fabric first then it'll pick up some of that fabric and not be as strong when it's stuck to your paper. Justin Donaldson talks about this in his video about his plein air kit.. Then again, maybe you're just a gentle tape peeler. Great video though, I've only just started gouache painting and always paint directly on paper, might start with an under painting next time see how it goes. I usually have trouble getting the lighter values back though
@JaredCullum
@JaredCullum 5 жыл бұрын
MasterMonday thanks for watching! Yea- I’m careful because I’ve had it pull the actual gouache up off and had to go back and fix paintings before. I do the fabric trick on my shirt though too. I will have to look in that artist. :) appreciate you watching!

Hi, any advice on managing change in colour of gouache as it dries? Love your work btw ( have been compulsively rewatching them) thank you!
@JaredCullum
@JaredCullum 5 жыл бұрын
FruutsuPunchSamurai thank you! :) I think it’s just something you have to not think about and you will eventually adjust to the bell curve of color and value. Aim for value- but value and color are relative. So they change when you place other color and value next to it. The whole thing is constantly changing and you have to adapt and chop and change as you go. To that end- I say try to relax and just enjoy the chess match with the gouache haha :) hope that helps.

I am curious as to why so many youtube artists are using gouache all of a sudden. It used to be considered a "poor cousin" of transparent watercolor, but seems to be popular all of a sudden. Any idea why?
@JaredCullum
@JaredCullum 5 жыл бұрын
Francoise de Rocher poor cousin? How dare you. Hahahha (I’m joking) I don’t know! I agree though. I think Gurney made it more appealing and accessible. It’s his fault haha and I think it’s because of a lack of education materials previously? I started this channel for watercolor and had no intention of showing gouache. I do it because of demand. When I do watercolor I get messages and comments saying “more gouache!” Or “go back to gouache” and now I’m doing more gouache than watercolor. Also- the views are quadruple for some reason. There is a lot of watercolor out there- I don’t know. That’s just been my experience on here. :)
@francoisederocher
@francoisederocher 5 жыл бұрын
I agree that Gurney put gouache "on the map"; it is also an easier medium to control and some people might be discouraged by the difficulties of transparent watercolor, the price of really good paper.... I have a few old tubes somewhere and will give it a shot. Who knows? I might get converted and never look back. Whatever medium you use, you are super good, so I don't care, just curious of your opinion and thank you for sharing.:)
