A little tip on pulling line so you can find the depth you want, is most rods from the reel to the first eyelet is about 2 feet. You could measure at home, but that way, you can know about where you are depth wise and can adjust as needed. We usually park the boat at the white buoys there and have caught them from 5-20 ft down. Thought that 1st one was a big fish!!!

Dumb question. But do you actually move the bobber stopper up 20' on your line. That means it will be in your spool before casting. Sorry newbie hear.
@SeaSpankerOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Jesse Garcia not a dumb question at all, I’m learning this stuff just like you are 🤘. Short answer is, yes. The stops are designed to go through your rod guides and onto the spool of your reel. That being said, the bobber stops don’t always work perfectly haha. They can get stuck on your reel bail and catch on your rod guides while casting so its definitely something to practice with and find what works best for you. Hope that helps and If you have any other questions just let me know. I may go back next week and do a video on different types of bobber stops and see which work best.

I haven’t found a bobber stop that won’t stick occasionally. I find the rubber ones stick the most, it’s a toss up for me between the ones you tie on and the ones I’m starting to like is a rectangle with 4 holes that you thread your line through. They aren’t perfect, probably better with a 2500 size reel and your rod eyelets should be pretty big.

We use slip bobbers with nitecrawlers. Don’t inflate them, let them sink. Remember, power bait floats, so your weight will be at your depth, but the power bait will float up and sometimes cause tangles. The Carolina keepers are a great idea of your main line is small enough

@SeaSpankerOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Anywhere near where I was. I was down by the dam inside the buoy lines near the aerator (that loud fountain looking thing in the middle). The aerator is there to help keep the trout alive during the heat of summer. It oxygenates and cools the water so alot of the trout are in that area. It doesn’t matter which side you choose as the trout were jumping all over. You need to fish early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The fish tend to turn off midday.

I have a question at 8:50 you say you don’t want the leader more than 12” long but at 10:50 the caption reads 6-7ft leader. Which is it lol ?
@SeaSpankerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
No worries, I was using 2 different methods when I was out there. On the slipbobber set up I dont like to use a leader longer than 12” but the other one was a carolina rig and on that one I was using a 6-7’ leader. During the summer months up there the trout suspend high in the water column so you need to use a super long leader when using a carolina rig to get your bait to the fish. Hope that clears it up, if not just let me know 🤘

Whats the depth of the water there? Just wondering why fishing off the bottom wouldnt be an option.
@SeaSpankerOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
stykman101 I believe at or near the dam its near 80’ deep. The problem is the dissolved oxygen levels in the water during summer. The heat warms the water and and lowers the amount of oxygen in the water. Trout prefer oxygen levels of 7-9mg and cool water temps, unfortunately as the water warms there gets to be less oxygen in the deeper cooler water so the trout end up suspended in the water column getting the coolest possible water with the most available oxygen. It just makes traditional methods of fishing near impossible so thats why you go to slipbobbers, super long leaders, etc. I hope that makes sense. There are lots of articles on line if you want to dive into it 🤘

Rob !!!...hows it be buddy !..hey fom the bobber stopper, all the way down to the treble hook ,how many feet should it be ..ty
@SeaSpankerOutdoors Жыл бұрын
It depends on how deep you want the bait to go. At big bear I usually start at 10’ down but alot of the time they are just 5’ below the surface. Unless your talking about how far the hook should be from your weight and or swivel then I usually set mine about 1’ down from the weight if that makes sense 🤘

Thank you for sharing the nice video! When you cast out the slip bobber, do you watch the slip bobber or watch the line on the rod? I can think it may not easy to always keep an eye on the bobber when you cast further out with some angle of sun light working against your eyes.
@SeaSpankerOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I try to watch the bobber but if there is alot of surface activity it can be difficult especially if your making long casts as I was in this video. Sometimes I would just have to hold the rod and manage the line while it drifted or risk missing a bite.

@ol25333 жыл бұрын
have you tried a bottom rig such as the carolina rig insteal of the slip bobber for rainbow trout? or is the slip bobber a better technique?
@SeaSpankerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes. Most lakes I go to I use a carolina rig when bait fishing for trout. I use a slipbobber mainly at big bear lake during the summer months. As the water warms oxygen levels decrease in the deeper water causing the trout to suspend higher up in the water column making a standard carolina rig ineffective.

@@SeaSpankerOutdoors great info to keep in mind! thanks. I'm headed out to trout lake tomorrow. Whats the best baits for carolina rig and for drop shot rig? I like to use worms and maggots mainly
@SeaSpankerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@ol2533 carolina rigs I use inflated night crawlers, berkley power eggs, powerbait, or micetails. For drop shot I usually use 2” artificial minnows. You can also use worms or maggots on a dropshot. Colors and flavors of bait for each technique will vary depending on what lake you are at and what the fish seem to want that particular day. Just experiment with different ones until you start getting bites 🤘
@ol25333 жыл бұрын
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors oh yes i got the worm inflator to use for carolina rig! worms are my favorite! But wouldnt it just be easier to use a worm on a drop shot so you dont have to inflate it? I definitely feel like live bait works better than powerbait and artificial.
@SeaSpankerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@ol2533 sure, but sometimes the fish aren’t going to want a worm on a dropshot rig they may only want it inflated on a carolina or they may not want worms at all that day and are only taking a certain color power egg. These are all different techniques to try so you can catch more fish. I use a variety of baits and techniques because the fish seem to change their minds on what they want to eat daily haha. The best way to consistently catch fish is to be flexible and try new things 🤘

If I'm fishing and setting it for deeper depths and the little orange bobber stopper reels up into the reel when I casst out would it go through the guides smoothly? Seems it would catch if Im casting unless i'm fishing it from a boat and just dropping it down. I've never used this method, seems it would be a good way to get down there where they are
@SeaSpankerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
It will go through the guides and reel fairly smooth if your using a small enough bobber stop for the rod and reel your using. It is by no means perfect and I have hung up my rig many times casting and broken off. If you watch another one of my videos “ how to catch trout at big bear lake during summer” I go into more detail on the rods, reels, and bobber stops I prefer. It is definitely easier from a boat as you dont need to cast very far at all. When using this technique from shore I usually am casting a good distance so I have a rod and reel I use pretty much just for slipbobbers. I primarily only use slipbobbers at big bear during the warmer summer months and it works extremely well. Do some experimenting with the different bobber stops and see which one you prefer or works best for your rod and reel.
