Seastar Hydraulic Steering Install

I have a 20 yr old seastar system. Recently I lost steering to starboard. Steering to port works as should. I bled the system 3 times. I was able to remove alot of air. Steering to starboard began working. I have one issue still. When turning to starboard the engine will reach full stop but the wheel will continue to turn. If all the air has been removed and there are no visible leaks do you think there is a valve issue in the helm?

Does a new Suzuki have a grounding strap? Explain the function.

@@glenncollins8544 all outboards should. They stop the main shaft the seals ride on from pitting caused from electrolysis. Once the shaft pits it’s only a matter of time until the seals start leaking.

Thanks for the video! I just purchased my first boat (1987 Grady White) it has a 2018 Evinrude G2 150 with old mechanical steering system. The boat under throttle, the steering turns violently clockwise. Per the advise from Dometic, I just ordered this exact Seastar kit hoping that upgrading to hydraulic steering will help/resolve the torque steering issue. I have never installed hydraulic steering before. I noticed you used anti-seize in a few applications. Is there a brand you recommend or just any marine grade will do? Do you use any other kinds of grease during the install? Thanks for any and all help. Again, awesome video, I will likely watch it again next week when I install my kit.

Any kind of anti seize will work. Definitely invest in marine grease though. It has different properties and won’t break down the same way regular grease would. Hope that cures your steering problem!

@@bustoutanotherthousand1257 Hey buddy, sorry if this is a dumb question. Did you use any thread sealant on the hydraulic fittings? In your experience is it needed?

@@markobrien4103 the bay star kit says no sealant, if there’s an o ring, never use it

@@markobrien4103 the only time you would use a sealant is if using the NPT style fittings for the older systems. The newer systems have the ORB style with an o ring as stated before. Do not use Teflon tape on any steering fitting though. Thread sealant with PTEF

Great video! At 21:45 you talk about getting that bracket part off in 20 years ha ha. What is the best approach at that time? Mine is pretty much seized over the years and I'm looking for ideas. Thanks in advance! Ted

You’re talking about the support arms? If so you’ll need some sore of puller to be able to get it off. Make sure it gets plenty of grease!

@@bustoutanotherthousand1257 Yeah,, the support brackets are really on there,,,Getting the nuts and washers easy.. Its removing the bracket.

@@tedcremer8567 you could also back the nut off of tilt tube shaft and try to hammer it out the other way

Awesome video a lot of great information. I have 2 questions should the steering wheel stop when the motor moves all the way in one direction or another? Do you have to change the hoses when going from Baystar to Seastar? Did you do it due to larger lines for Seastar or are rubber ones just better than the older kinda stiff hoses? Thanks!

How much time did it take to swap out the steering system?

Great video! When you install the nut that pulls the slack out, do you tighten hand tighten and lock down or tighten with channel locks (more snug)? Also is the washer (or may have been 2) necessary that fits beside that nut?

Just hand tighten. The washers depend on application!

What the differece in what you took off vs the one you installed? Both were hydraulic ?
