A technique I have seen, and similar to what I used on Aircraft, for locating deck leaks is to use some kind of blower to put positive pressure on the inside of your boat. ( A garden blower or something like that.) You need to seal up all your vents and hatches and around where you are pumping the blower in. Then on the outside start brushing a soapy solution around all the screws and potential holes through the deck. If there is a leak you will start to see bubbles form.

Find leak. Plug every air vent on boat. Cut a plywood washboard with hole in it to fit leaf blower or large shop vac hose with vac running as blower. Object is to pressurize interior of boat. Mop exterior with soapy water to find leaks.

The Snowpocalypse was such a shock for us. It stalled everything for about a week, caused a lot of car wrecks. We aren't used to snow. Most years if we get any snow, it's only about a dusting up to an inch or so.

There are companies that specialize in leak detection. They often use infrared cameras. The can literally scope the area and see where the leak originates in your cockpit or cabintop by following the trail of water between the cabin top and the headliner, using infrared imaging. I use them the find leaks in commercial buildings I’ve owned down here in Portland, just south of Seattle. Fair winds,, RAN!

While you were getting the unusual snow (I grew up in Seattle), where I live now, 80 miles north and east of Seattle, we got 3 feet of snow in two days! It definitely was snowmageddon up here. I've lived near Seattle for almost 30 years and have never had snow in my yard for so long a period, almost 6 weeks! We typically only get an inch or two of snow every 2-3 years and it is only for a few days but this year set records. Average winter temperature is 43º F to give you an idea. Hope you enjoyed your stay here in spite of the unusual weather. Thank you for sharing your adventures.

When possible cover with a waterproof tarp, the front section of the boat! Unroll sections of the tarp till its starts leaking! My parents had a RV made by Airstream (all aluminum) that leaked, we found the leak by using the tarp method! God Bless!

Yea, I"m part of that Scandinavian heritage here in the US. I'm half Norwegian and half Swedish. My Dad who is full Swed participated in "set dey mi" not sure the spelling in Norway years ago. I know I have distant relatives in Sweden as my Dad and Mom visited them when they were over there about fifteen years ago.

Johan told where the word "Styrbord" comes from, but he did not tell what it means in English. Styra = to steer. Styrbord, the side where the boat/ship is steered. The old English form of the word was steorbord, which later became starboard. So, the word has nothing to do with stars. The port (left) side is called "Babord", it is an old scandinavian form of the word "bakbord" (=backboard). The board that was on the backside of the helmsman. The English word "port" is much newer. Seafarers used the word "ladbord" (the side where the ship is loaded from) until the British navy officially chose the word "port" (the side that was facing the wharf/land) in mid 1800's, because ladbord and starboard sounded too similar. Even though ships have used symmetrical rudders on the centerine from 1400's, these old words are still used. And not just in seafaring, but also in aviation. Even the international space station has starboard and port sides rather than right and left sides.

This year was the first time in 10 years I did not go to the Seattle Boat show. So I missed you guys and the snow. Well I have seen plenty of snow since we lived in Jackson Hole Wyoming for 20 years. What I don’t understand is how an aluminum boat can leak water. It must be a hatch or window that is the culprit. I hope you find it soon. Nobody likes to sleep on the couch. 😩😏

We need a Hunting the leak segment. Maybe a moisture meter could help trace a path through the woodwork? Giving you a general idea of its origin. Other than that I think you may have to check every deck penetration and reseal? A lovely big boat visit but the Drone seemed a bit excessive. :P

We had a very similar leak problem in a Catalina 30 that we had. My wife woke up in 3 inches of water one morning after leaving the bimini off one night during a rain storm. The water was coming in the binacle at the various control openings. Your boat arrangement looks similar. That might be the source.

BTW Ran, I forgot to add that since your SV was in cool/cold environments and you made your trip through the sub-tropics and heavy seas on your way back to another cold port environment that your leak is now more pronounced (wider/bigger) in the cold port and you are seeing more evidence of it. Might be a good time to dig into it before it warms up and the gap gets tighter. Might also help indicate where leak is since you know the nature of your Aluminum SV and how much expansion/contraction there could be with it and the accessories installed in it. Just a thought....

Spent some time in Sweden & Norway back in 83 as I was deployed with the U.S. Army for Reforger and we had way more snow then that and they all seemed like this is normal. That snow looked like a light dusting compared to the snow we had there. Surely you all must be good with snow & the cold, Right? Hello Ran, Since you are at a dock with pressurized water you can get a dry day and target items where you have dissimilar material joined/sealed and spray one item hard, check for leak, if no leak, dry area protect from getting wet again. Pick another item to spray down, keep doing it until you find your item/items causing your leak. I actually had to run a small sprinkler (like one of those cheap donut hole sprinklers) upside down over items until I could see the wicking through the items seals down stream of it. It is probably big enough now with a single concentrated spray/leak test to find it or them. The dissimilar materials are usually cause because it heats and cools at different rates, stressing the sealant. I would be hesitant using dyes, because of staining your interior materials. Double check top hull bolt-through penetrations also that are old, that may have not been potted/sealed. Good luck, leaks are a PITA if you let them get ahead of you.

One can live with a interior deck being damp , but a wet bed is just misery. Hope you are able to isolate the leaks eventually. Loved your video, as usual, you two do a wonderful job creating and publishing them. "Snowpocalypse" Ha, I expected 10 meters with that title. We got at least as much as seen in the video here in N. Georgia last winter. You definitely need that Viking head gear, priority ONE! Fair seas!

maybe you can put food color in water, pour it in different places near the leak and when it's green you know it's out there somewhere.

You also migth be able to use electrical resistance to find where on the deck the water enters.

With a screwed down teak deck a leak/leaks can come from anywhere, especially as the teak ages. Many folks remove the teak, fix all the screw holes, and paint the deck or cover with a glue down synthetic teak looking product. I'm not sure on RAN, but guessing that stainless steel screws were used to attach the teak to the aluminum deck. That's an additional problem of electrolysis between the different metals. Basically all this is just a recipe for leaks.
